I just wanted to thank everyone for replying to my posts as well as others. I have learned so much about tmj just by reading the posts on here. I do know now that tmj maybe something I may have to deal with for the rest of my life. It could get better or worse. But worrying more about it I feel won't make my health any better. I have read a lot about the different types of treatments for tmj and all of them don't sound very promising. I feel that the most important thing to do is try to keep the cause under control which is the teeth grinding and clenching and other bad habits. I even went to inquire about neuromuscular dentistry and how they approach tmj. I am not willing to spend all that money. I even asked the dentist if I were to spend all that money and get my teeth fixed can you guarantee me that the tmj will be cured. He said no. In fact he said that if you do grind or clench your teeth again the tmj will reoccur. So then I said to myself then why spend all that money. I need to fix the causes. He told me its like having a sprain ankle and if we continue to do the things that will aggravate the situation the injury will never heal. I agree with him totally. Some dentist will say oh if your bite is off that could create more problems for the tmj. But I looked at my brother's teeth which is totally crooked and messed up and he has no tmj or pain in his jaw. My mom and dad also have no teeth and they don't have any jaw problems. I also have told my friends that I have tmj and that my jaw clicks. Practically all of my friends have clicking in their jaw or have had tmj before but they told me that its just something that is part of life. From all of this, I have to say that they are right. As long as we continue to let stress and anxiety rule our life, we will continue to have tmj and other health problems. Just my opinion.....

Hello Kika,
I believe their tm joints are supported by the rear molars. And that's the reason they dont' have tmj and you do.

Hi Oldpal,
They don't have any rear molars. They only have maybe one or two front teeth left. That's all.

Hi Oldpal,
It's not impossible because everyone in my family has teeth problems. It's hereditary. My mom and dad don't have any back molars. My dad only has three front teeth left and my mom only has one back molar and 4 front teeth left. It's amazing how they seem to adjust and they can eat practically anything. I do have all my teeth and I went to so many dentists and they all say my bite is normal and I still have tmj. Each tmj case is unique to the individual and just because one may not have any teeth doesn't mean they will develop or have tmj. Look at a lot of older people who have no teeth and they use their gums to eat. I just find it very fascinating how they manage to eat with no teeth. I am not making this up because I have lot's of friends who's teeth are crooked, have back molars missing and they don't have tmj.

kikaida,
You are absolutley correct. Tmj can having nothing at all to do with your teeth or your bite, but can have more to do with facts like grinding, clenching or over extension of the jaw muscles. It's hard to see people with bad or missing teeth and they are fine and then some of us have beautiful pearly whites and we have the tmj.
Good luck,
Karen

OK i wasn't even going to touch this one and i hope i don't upset anyone But.......First let me start by saying i agree stress and anxiety makes everything worse but.... stress and anxiety will not prevent my bones from fusing it will not stop my headaches from coming i am in general one of the happiest people you will meet however there are certain Medical reasons these things are happening, i try more than anyone to not focus on it. I try and work through the pain I don't even like to touch my face or look in the mirror too long just so I don't mentally exaggerate my situation I think the more you think about it the worse it is but SOMETIMES, it's just there and darn it hurts !!!! I'm not sure of your situation and I truly hope that all you need is mind over matter but I'm sorry to say some of us have long past that point.
Take care
