Hey all,
I have a 1 level ALIF on Dec. 29th. L5 S1. (as long as the vascular "guy" is OK w/that date) How long is the hospital stay typically? I am reading other stories for helpful hints, etc...but just have that quick question.
Can I plan on spending new years eve in a hospital bed?? I don't care really....I just want this done...the pain is completely ruining my life right now.

Thanks,

shak

I'm sorry Shak:

I have no experience with this. I'm still trying to figure out what all the Letters stand for :D ...I've seen PLIF and now ALIF... I know Anterior and Posterior and I'm guessing the "L" is lumbar and "F" is fusion, but have no clue as to the "I".

No help from me, I only had a discectomy, but do want to tell you that you will be in my thoughts and prayers......and good luck to you on getting your answer...There are wonderful folks on this board....I'm sure your answer will be comming soon.

Happy Holidays!

Bg

I have to have that done as soon as W/C approves it and the doctor said 2-3 days.

Yes... plan on New Year's Eve in the hospital.
If you end up with any dural tears, you can count on a few days past that even.

I'm guessing you won't feel much like tootin' any horns right away either.

I had an ALIF, PLIF, and Lami on 11/12 and spent 5 days in the hospital (also got 5 screws and 2 rods, donar graft and self-pelvis graft). My insurance initially approved 2 days in the hospital and the docs office told me that was normal procedure and it would be adjusted as necessary. What's going to drive how long you're in the hospital is whether you have a fever and when you pass gas and/or have a bowel movement. Either situation will keep you in the hospital as long as necessary. Insurance has since paid for everything. Good luck with your surgery ... take it easy as you recover.
