Hi

Does anyone have severe neck tension in the suboccipital muscles at the back of the neck with tenderness at side of neck also.

Mine is mainly in the right muscle and it has been none relenting with ice, heat etc..... it seems rock hard and anything I seem to do aggravates it even more

Also can the tension of these muscles cause severe dizziness, as I was queueing up at the shop and wham bam severe dizziness hit me and it felt like I was going to collapse which made me really shaky :-( I just wanted to get out of there. This shook me really up.

this is a common symptom. Physical therapy or massage therapy can help loosen up these neck muscles. Ask your doctor if he can recommend someone.
take care, Ann

Hi I go to see a chiropractor for my tmj, neck and back problems. I do find it helpful getting rid of the pain but I am very reluctant to get my neck manipulated because now my neck cracks and pops when I move it sometimes. It never did that before I went to see the chiropractor. But the good thing is with the tmj I have no pain. From time to time I do have stiff neck on my left side. I would suggest seeing a chiropractor, massage therapist or accupuncture for your neck. If you decide to see a chiropractor I would see someone who doesn't do neck manipulations by twisting your neck. There are some who focus on doing massages on the muscles. Sometimes we may feel that the tmj is causing the neck problems but sometimes it could be the other way around. The neck could be the cause of your tmj. About 10 months ago I pulled a muscle in my neck and I couldn't move my neck for about 3 weeks. My neck was really stiff and sore to the point where I had a hard time driving and getting up from bed. From there on that was the onset of my tmj.

Evonne,
It really is pretty common. Also there is a condition you can develop called temporal tendonitis that can really cause neck problems all due to tmj.

As far as the dizziness is concerned that has been one of my biggest battles. I have fought it for years. With the splint I just got this year is the first time it is under control. I know that it shakes you up. It is kind of scary when it happens out of nowhere because I am always so afraid it will happen to me while driving.

Hopefully you can get this under control, but at least know that it is a symptom and a very common one.

Yeah, I have SEVERE neck and shoulder tension. It is rock hard and my weekly massage therapy hasn't done much to relieve that tension. Nothing seems to touch it. Heat/ice, muscle relaxants, chiropractic adjustments, and acupuncture have all been useless. I also have really sore temple muscles and now the muscles under my chin are really tender and sore as well, which is a new development. Makes me think I am getting worse every day.

Welcome!

Are you being treated by a dentist yet?? Sounds like you need muscle relaxers. After a while heat and ice aren't going to cut it.

Thanks for all your replies.

Just started taking muscle relaxers, I suppose it takes a couple of weeks before I will see any benefit from them. Also waiting on Physio appointment.

Evone,

I replied to one of your other posts and I reccommended you look into an NTI splint.

The tightness in the back of your neck is a reaction to the temporalis and masseter muscles tightening up due nocturnal clenching. My physio also says that a lazy tougne can contribute to neck tension, it should rest in the palate of your mouth and not sit on the floor of the mouth.

I have an NTI splint and my neck tension is greatly reduced, I do tougne exercises to strenghtn up the hyoid muscles (tougne related).. covering all bases you could say.

Getting your neck tension fixed is important because any pinched nerves could cause you trouble later on. I wonder if your neck is in an adopted forward position. This is indicative of the upper trapezius muscles tightened up.

Good luck

Evonne,
Hey, I was wondering how you are doing. What kind of muscle relaxer did you get on? I have tried several of them and just switched to Soma. It has worked wonders and I could tell a huge difference with my first dose.

The thing is what med works for one can do nothing for someone else. I had been on Skelaxin for a year and thought it helped until I tried the Soma, then I realized the Skelaxin wasn't doing anything compared to this.

If they don't help in a few days, I would see about trying another one. I know getting meds can be like pulling teeth sometimes..........good luck!

Hope you have a wonderul Christmas..

Karen
