just wanted to know if anyone has heard of this. Last dec. I developed this annoying lump feeling in my throat. The front of my neck is very red and when touched leaves white fingerprints. I've definately been perio for a year have every symptom (lucky me) I used to take progesterone 2.5 25 days of the month. New doc changed me to prometrium first 10 days of the month because my periods are so irregular. Haven't had one since sept. I'm currently being tested for thyroid but that's going around in circles. My doc that retired recently always said it was menopausal. It seems that since I haven't had a period all my symptoms have gotten worse. (being cold, the lump is more annoying, tired, dry eyes etc. etc. etc. any advise would be greatly appreciated. Happy Holidays to all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course having tests to rule out other possibilities is very important. I hope that you get the results from your thyroid soon. I use to have that lump sensation in my throught when my anxiety was at it's worst. I was also having digestive problems (IBS and reflux) during this time. My doctor placed me on a med. for the ibs and reflux an I haven't had that lump in my throat feeling since. Of course we are all sooooo very different, so see your doctor and have them run tests. I wish you the best.

Hi Patti,
Have you seen an endocrinologist, a dr. who specializes glands and hormones?
I was diagnosed and treated by my GP with hypothyroid for years. When I suddenly had all these peri-meno symptoms (but my GP didn't think so), he re-tested my thyorid and I was within range on meds. He did feel a small nodule on my neck so he sent me to get an ultrasound. Found out I had 6 nodules. So, then sent me to an Endocrinologist dr.
The Endo dr. said nodules were common and mine didn't have goiters. All was fine but I still had extreme fatigue, dry eyes, and just feeling bad and weird. I asked to be tested for Sjorgen's b/c of my dry eyes and fatigue. Ended up going to a Rheumy dr. who ruled out me having Sjorgen's. Said I just had dry eyes. My eyes are back to normal now too (after seeing an eye specialist and going on Restasis).
I have had times when I felt this kind of lump feeling in my throat - thinking it was the nodules acting up - but then it went away after a few days. So, what I'm trying to say here is don't let the drs. run you about a thryoid test - it's just a simple blood test. I think another blood test is called ANA and SED rate - I think it shows if you have some kind of autoimmune disorder and/or inflammation going on. Also, don't treat your dry eyes yourself - go see an eye specialist if you haven't.
Do keep us posted!

hi molly,
I am seeing my new gp this tues. to go over my thyroid blood test results and the results of a thyroid sonogram. It just seems that this lump in my throat feeling started a year ago when my new ob/gyn took me off progesterone 2.5 25 days a month. I complained to her this past Aug. so she started me on prometrium 10 days a month. I did see that a symptom of low progesterone is thyroditis. My gp seems to think it is a thyroid problem but past bloodwork has been normal tsh .42 so now he's testing my frees. But I starting to doubt. I've been doing alot of research about perimenopause and the symptoms are identical to being hypo. its actually scary.....so if no satisfaction from the gp, I think i'll call the ob/gyn. and get the old hormones tested. Isn't if grand to be female!!!!!!!!!! Happy Holidays

Hi Patti,
There is no test they can do to determine if you're in peri-meno - what they will test is your FSH/LSH, testosterone, and progesterone but most likely they will show up normal when your peri-meno. It will only change when you're in menopause - mine changed dramatically within months. I read in several books, one by Dr. Christine Northrup that your thyroid test may show up normal but in reality it's not, this happens when you're going thru peri-meno. So that's why you end up feeling so bad! I tried telling my drs. this but it went thru one ear and out the other.
Why are you taking prometrium - to regulate your period? When my periods became irregular, I just let it be. When you're going thru peri-meno and if you're even as young as 35, you can be going thru it and having irregular periods is one of the first symptoms. How old are you if you don't mind me asking?
As with the lumpy feeling in your throat - I have a friend who is way beyond menopause age and she has this all the time - she has gone to several nose/throat/ear drs. and they all have given her some kind of acid reflux meds. It seems like that is what all drs. are diagnosing people w/these days -we think it is a promotion of the new acid reflux drugs that are out there now. Anyway, it didn't work for her and she is still walking around with this lumpy throat feeling - not coughing, not spitting out anything either.
Yes, it's absolutely wonderful being a female, esp. this time in our lives ha-ha-ha! It's wonderful getting old too....sometimes it seems like all that happens is we just start having more and more ailments and complaints! I dread it...
Do keep us posted ! I intend to have a better Christmas and New Year this year - it was crappy for me last year! You hang in there, happy holidays to you too!

hi molly
don't mind telling you at all, I'm hitting the big 50 next month. I started provera 5 years ago after a hysterscope and d & c. the doctor said I wasn't producing enough. Just got my bloodwork back on my thyroid and everthing was within the normal range. But the ultrasound did show 3 nodules that measure 3mm, 4x4x1.3mm and 3mm. they're located near the isthumus.
my gp feels I should see an endo because my thyroid measures 5 x 1.5 x 1.8 left and 5.6 x 2.1 x 1.5 right which is bigger than before.
But I do know I felt better when I was taking the progesterone. Might call my ob/gyn in the morning. I did read that lack of progesterone in your body can cause thyroditis. and no monthly friend since september so maybe the old hormones need to be tested.
any advice? :)

Hi Patti,
If you do a search on thyroid nodules, you will find they are very common and pretty rare for it to be cancerous, but I think you should go see an endo dr. too.
Also, since you're 50, your period can easily begin to get irregular and don't worry about it (unless you think you could be pregnant). I just let nature runs it course. Unless you really gung-ho about going to drs., I would wait before getting the old hormones tested. You haven't had your period for 3 mos. only and it might not show much of a change. Mine (FSH/LSH) changed significantly within a 9 mo. period.

hi molly,
happy wednesday. I got my thyroid results, pretty much normal except the gland has enlarged. Have to see an endo but can't get an appointment until Feb. I did talk to one of the drs. in the ob/gyn group. Of course it had to be the one that's a jerk. He told me since I haven't had a period in three months, I'll probably never get another one. He said I don't need progesterone because my estrogen must be low. Then he told me to call an ENT or my GP. Thanks to him for all the info. haha Its too bad the other 3 drs. in the group are very helpful. So nature will take its course and someday I will find an end to this madness.............|Good thing my hubby is so encouraging and can take the crying jags....... :bouncing:

HI patti,
Your gyn does sound like a jerk - he doesn't seem to care too much - if I were you, go to a woman gyn if you can. Think they can be more understanding. This gyn also sounds like he's a hurry, probably was anxious to get you out the door and go away for the holidays! LOL! He also doesn't seem to know what he is talking about either - even tho you are low in estrogen, you are probably low in progesterone and that is what is causing the imbalance! Also, even tho you haven't had your period in 3 mos, it doesn't mean you won't get it again. It did for me - I didn't have it for 4 mos./then it came back ; then 6 mos./then it came back, a friend didn't have it for 11 mos. and it came back, so forth. The dude doesn't know what he's talkin' about! You probably get more information and help from here than from him!!
Aside from the lumpy feeling in your throat, how else are you feeling?
Have a good holiday!!!

I bought myself a present too, Dr. Lee's menopause book, I don't plan on leaving my house tomorrow. Just the 4 of us home, it'll be nice. I like when holidays are quiet. Hope you have a good christmas, talk to you soon.
