I was informed by my recent ex-boyfriend (hopefully soon to be back together) that 1 in 20 non-pregnant women lactate after their 1st sexual encounter & it happens. He said it's a problem with your hormones. They get all confused. (??) They miss their periods during this it goes away eventually & they get their period again.
My problem is slightly different. I lost my virginity in mid 1996. I've been lactating since & I still get my period. (I thought I was pregnant at first, but it turned out I wasn't) My ex said that what I have going on is really rare & that there might be something seriously wrong with my hypothalimus. I haven't been able to find any info on this. Does anyone here know anything about what happened to me?

More than likely you have a high prolactin level. This would cause you to lactate, but the fact that you still have your period indicates that it isn't extremely high. Prolactin can be slightly elevated if you get a lot of breast stimulation or by certain medications. You should get your hormone levels tested. Yes, it could be something serious, namely a pituitary tumor, so you should definitely see your doctor about it.

Thanks! I'm going to do that, definately. I was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder & I'm currently on Prozac & Lithium--which are working great, but I'm wondering, maybe I have totally messed up hormones from back then & that's what was actually the problem all along. I plan to have ALL the levels tested-a full spectrum workup-& see what comes up. I hope it's nothing bad.....
