WASHINGTON (Dec. 21) -- An Alzheimer's disease prevention trial was suspended after researchers said there were more heart attacks and strokes among patients taking naproxen, an over-the-counter pain reliever in use for 28 years and commonly known under the brand name Aleve

Officials at the National Institutes of Health said the study was suspended after three years when it was found that patients taking naproxen had a 50 percent greater incidence of cardiovascular events - heart attack or stroke - than patients taking placebo.

OK Guys this is kinda scary I know for me I have taken plenty of both I quit taking celebrex shortly after the Vioxx deal however I think most ALL of us take some type of anti-inflammatory to reduce swelling. Little scary to think whets next. Anyone have an opinion about this Should we all stay away from them?

i know many people on this board have arthritis in jaw including me makes me wonder what we will be able to take soon
Take care

I had heard this before from my dr and my dentist. They both told me to only take tylenol. Both have also said it is better to take an opioid based pain merd long term than the NSAIDS. Here is a thought............my dr told me it is much safer for a little extra help is to take tylenol and a little aspirin. Of course you HAVE to watch your tummy, but taking it under a dr's care. She is DEAD set against even advil and motrin. It is very scary what they have put out there for us to take.

I cannot tolerate any of those NSAIDS either. I went the Vioxx and Celebrex route too. They did not work particularly well. Then I had a doc put me on high doses of ibuprofen which ripped up my stomach. I think it ironic that these drugs are now coming out as unsafe when all I have been hearing for the last year is that opiates are evil and should not be taking them. My present doc thinks opiates are far safer to the body then are those NSAIDS. Thank god! I find a lot more relief from opiates. These docs are not going to know what to do now!
