I had a hysterectomy on December 1st (It is now the 22nd). A week after my surgery I went to have my staples removed. I had a hematoma under the staples and needless to say the whole thing blew open. I had to go to the hospital and have emergecy surgery. They took care of the inside, but decided to leave the outside sutures off...to let it heal from the inside out.
I have a opening of about 7" long, over 2" wide and over 2" deep. We clean and pack it 3x a day. Also, once a week I have to go to the doctor to have him cut away dead tissue that forms (which seems like it will never heal at this rate)...but anyway....
I seemed like I was doing okay pain wise until the last couple of days. I am now having tremendous pain on my lower left side. It hurts even more to move...and walking is excruciating. I'm afraid that something is wrong, but would hate to call the doctor if it is normal. What makes me more concerned is that the doctor and all the nurses have said what a strong pain tolerance I have...so this pain being as bad as it is (it is so painful I cry...even being on vicodine) has me worried.
Has anyone gone through this? Is this normal?
Thank you so much for your responses!

Sorry you are going through this after your hyst. I had a hyst in June and didn't have any problems with the wound opening back up. I would call the doctor if the pain is too much to bear. It's what they get paid for! Hope you feel better soon.
Oh when it's open like that it is standard practice to let it heal from the inside out.

Thanks!
My sister had a hysterectomy a little over a year ago too and everything went fine.
I got so tired of the pain that I did call my doctor. He wasn't in, so I got the doctor on call. He told me to go to the emergency room...that it sounded like an infection. So, I went to the emergency room. They took a CT scan and said from what they could tell everything was fine. They treated me for the pain and sent me home. They didn't do any blood work or even look at the opening. Which I thought was very odd. Then they told me that if I got diareah (sp) or started running a fever to come back.
A couple of days ago I did get diareah, and I am running a slight temperature. I still have very soft stools, but I wouldn't call it diareah anymore. I see my doctor on Tuesday. We'll find out then.
Thanks again!
