Hi All:

Hi Kimianne--

Just want to say please don't get discouraged. I think the board is slow right now, due to the holidays. As soon as the New Year rolls in, there will be a lot of new people posting, and I'm sure someone will want to buddy up and quit with you! And congratulations on deciding to quit too, such a smart thing to do for yourself!

Merry Christmas!
Deda :)

Hey my friend,

I will be your quit buddy. Like you I am waiting til the first of the year. I know it is wrong but I am giving myself a final week to smoke. I do truly want to quit for good though. I have alot of teeth and gum issues so my perio says time to quit. Plus it is stupid of me to be playing with my health this way. So if you would like to I would love to be your quit pal. I will keep in touch with you AOK.

All the best,

CK :bouncing:

Hi All:

Didn't make it to the boards over Christmas - too busy.

Thank you Deda. And congratulations on your quit!

davesgurl and CK39C - We can do it! I am scared and am wondering EXACTLY how I am going to manage it. But it NEEDS to be done. So come on buddies let's get it done. ;)

Talk to you soon!

Hi folks

DO NOT feel scared - that is a almost guarantee to fail. {removed}

My main thought in my head was "never take another puff". That was 7 weeks ago and it is still there. After using the info on that site I took an arrogant attitude (which is opposite to my character) to nicotine. Its just a substance nothing more/less. I am no weaker than the next person, who has given up, so why will I fail?

Do not battle with nico withdrawal just take the view that its a pathetically weak substance, with no IQ, that you can walk away from. I am only in my 7th week and I have been smoke free before for longer periods that I am now but the difference is , is that I am not battling with nicotine, I am just walking away from it as it is a pointless substance. I know that I will never take another puff.

If I can get through a night with a drink or two ;) :D without having a cig then, really, anyone can. As my name suggests I play darts and in the uk that means pub/beer/cigs.

I mentioned in the long thread http://www.healthboards.com/boards/showthread.php?t=216006 that I am quitting the most addictive substance but I never felt so good about myself. Take a very positive approach and it becomes relatively easy.

Will add more at a later date

Hi, I bet I quit ten times before I quit. I finally got the help I needed in the form of the nicotrol inhaler from my doc, the only thing that did it. I was a three pack a day smoker four years a go, haven't smoked since. Talk to him or her, your friens will tease you, my friends said it looked like I had a tampon in my mouth, meanwhile they were sucking on fire, who looked sillier? they are still burning money, I am not, who had the last laugh? Try it, it works. I also used it in conjunction with zyban, by the way, I smoled for 44 years. Please let me know how you are doing, you won't believe how you feel!

I'm new to the list and I just stopped smoking Monday. Well, I had 2 cigs today already. I don't think I'm going to make it. The last time I tried I went 3 days...that's not even a week. I'm trying my best not to smoke, if for nothing else for my health. But I honestly don't think I'll be able to just go cold turkey. Have any of you tried to wean yourself off cigs...has it worked or did you go cold turkey? :nono:

Hi everyone,

Yes I have made Jan 1 2005 my quit date. I am going to go cold turkey this I think is the best way to do it for good. So please anyone who needs support or if anyone can support me I would be glad to help. I enjoy smoking but my teeth and gums health are more important than this nasty expensive habit.

All the best in the new year!!!

Looking forward to hearing from you

Hi bbybyrd--

Instead of weaning off of the cigs, why don't you just go purchase a nicotene replacement aid, like nic gum or patches?? They REALLY DO work!! I quit my nasty smoking habit 15 months ago, (30 year chain smoker), and like you, I COULD NOT do it cold turkey!! :nono: DON'T GIVE UP!!! You CANNNNNNNNN DO IT!!! If I can, you most definitely can too!!

Best of luck to you,

Good luck to you all!!! I smoked 3 packs a day for 20 years and I've been smoke free now for 7 years. I used Zyban and it really did help. I hope the best for each of you and please don't be over critical of yourselves. It's a very hard thing to do and if, for some reason, you are unable to quit at this time, please don't think you are a failure or be to hard on yourselves. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. It will happen when you are ready. You have made the first step, WANTING to quit. Good luck!!!

My dad tried nic gum and he quit smoking but now he's addicted to the gum. I'm not sure if that's the right path for me or not. :nono:

Day 2 of my quit is coming to an end & I couldn't have done it w/o my nicotine replacement (Commit Lozenges). I am 21 and have smoked 1/2 my life (yes, since the age of 11) anywhere from 1/2-pk to pk-a-day. I didn't realize just how addicted I was until I attempted to quit (Jan 1st). The withdrawals were unbearable, and though I tried, I doubt I would have had success w/ the cold turkey method. There is nothing wrong w/ using a nicotine replacement and gradually breaking the addiction. It helps tremendously w/ the physical withdrawals/mood swings and isn't such a "shock" to your body. Supposedly, people are twice as likely to stay quit w/ nicotine replacement, so I've read. Also, you're not getting the tar and carbon monoxide and all the other toxic chemicals found in cigarette smoke. Your lungs can begin to heal as you slowly wean your brain off the drug.

Hey....everyone  Hope you don't mind my dropping in...my hubby is quitting...has not smoked since 12/31/04..going into his 4th day now on the patch. He's not one to come here but I really want him to succeed so I thought I'd act on his behalf and perhaps you can let me know as his wife a non-smoker how I can best support him ie:THINGS NOT TO SAY OR DO ;)

Anyway....I hope you all succeed hubby quit for 6 months 3 years ago but the social drinking only had him start again :nono: Like somebody already said...if you can have a few drinks and not light up then you'll be okay. Hope & pray hubby can do it this time around...keep up the good work...Goody

Well today is day 15 of no smoking for me... I am on the patch, and just lowered my dosage down to 7 mg, which is as low as I got. I am doing ok, but I still have the cravings.

I am 28 and had been smoking for 10 years. I really miss smoking A LOT. I had pneumonia at the begining of December and I would go out and have a smoke. I looked at myself in the mirror and thought what are you doing. Am I that addicted to smoking that with pneumonia I need a smoke? As of that day I started the patch. I feel 100% better. I don't have that annoying cough anymore, and I don't reak like smoke. I miss my smoking friends at work. I am also putting the money on spent on smokes away for a vacation as a incentive.

The only thing I have had trouble with is sleeping. I can't sleep at night, and I wonder if I could just smoke would I fall asleep? Well of course I don't try it out because I don't have even 1 smoke at home. Has anyone else had problems of not being able to sleep?

Everyone needs to keep up the no smoking! I read these posts and it inpsires me to quit. I don't want to die when I am 60, and I don't want to have to be on oxygen someday!

Happy New Year!
Josh

Hey Josh --

Congrats on your quit! I also smoked for 10 years (I am 21... yes, I started very young) and my quit date was Jan 1st. Today is Day 5 and though I'm still having lots of cravings, it's getting a little easier already.

Like you, I've also had trouble falling asleep at night. I think it's mostly nerves. I mean think about it-- we have smoked for a long time & our bodies aren't used to functioning w/o the cigarettes. I realize the patch is still delivering nicotine into your system (I'm using nicotine lozenges), but it's still a considerably lower amount than you'd get through smoking. It's a big adjustment. I am confident it'll get better w/ time.

Just be strong! You've already gone over 2 weeks w/o the cigarettes, the hardest part is over. In the long run, this short period of discomfort is nothing compared to the potential health problems we'd run into, had we not quit. Good luck & take care :)

I am also giving up. I have been on patches for 6 1/2 days now. So far I am doing it easy, lets hope it keeps up. I decided to give up because of my kids. My son is now 16 so can look after himself, but my daughter is nine and would be lost without me. My mum passed away recently, (partly because of smoking) I know how much it is hurting me, I dont want my daughter to go through what I am. SO I AM GOING TO SUCEED, and so will you if you are determined enough. I feel so much better after just one week off them. :bouncing:

FLOYDY CONGRATS ON YOUR 6 1/2 DAYS OF SMOKE FREE LIVING . I AM ALSO GOING ON MY 7 TH SMOKE FREE DAY MYSELF, lIKE YOU I ALSO USED THE PATCH, ITS AMAZING HOW GOOD YOU FEEL WITHOUT ALL THAT SMOKE IN YOUR LUNGS. MY KIDS HAD A BIG PART OF THIS DECISION BUT ULTIMITALLY I LIKE EVERYONE ELSE KNOWS AFTER 25 YEARS OF SMOKING YOU CANT DODGE THE BULLET MUCH LONGER WITHOUT PAYING SOME SORT OF PRICE. cONTINUED GOOD LUCK TOO ALL!!!.

Congrats to you all on your efforts....you're all doing great and for all the right reasons. Well it's been 10 days for my hubby and he's really doing well. Social drinking was his downfall last time and he admits to taking his one & only puff this past weekend after having a few drinks when we were out with friends. And that was his downfall last time he tried quitting and was smoke free for over 6 months. I'm hoping & praying that he succeds this time around.

The patch has turned out to be a pretty good way of quitting...the urges are not as bad as last time when my hubby went cold turkey. He already went to the 2nd lower dose due to the muscle & joint aches he was experiencing.

Hope everyone sticks it out & if you get the urge...come here and let someone else talk you out of it.....Goody
