Last night my left breast started hurting for seemingly no reason. I still cannot think of why it has started hurting. This afternoon, while taking a shower, I curiously did my own examination to maybe get a better idea of what was wrong. I didn't think of any reasons other than breast cancer, but at the age of fourteen I don't know if that's even probable. After my short examination I concluded that there is a hard, painful, disk-like feeling object that hurts to the softest touch right beneath my nipple. I am on my period right now and am therefore waiting to stop menstruating before bringing the matter up to my mother.
Any ideas of what might be the matter? Or any words of advice?

Before I started menopause, I had something that sounds similar to what you're experiencing. Mine was also in one breast, and the lump would come and go, and when I checked with my doctor, she said that it was nothing to worry about, it was just hormonal. It was quite painful, though, and it's natural to worry when we find something "abnormal" with our bodies.
Good for you, doing a breast self-exam! And yes, by all means, let your mother know what you've found.

Kudo's to you for doing exams!
At your age I would surmise it's more likely a cyst than cancer but it's really important to talk to mom about it. In fact, mom may have had similiar problems too. It in fact can be genetic of sorts. They do tend to act up during the menses, especially on the ovaries in addition to the breast. I started having the same problem as you around your age so it's possible.
Have mom take you to the family doctor or if you are uncomfortable with that have her take you to her OBGYN for a check. Not much may need to be done but at least you can put your mind to rest if it's nothing serious
