Hi Buff
I am in the same boat. SUffering today from eating too much and too many things I should not have. Particularly these brownies with caramel, nuts and butterscotch chips on top. Then pot roast - did not eat too much meat though. Yes I am paying the piper today.

Same here Buff! I ate several cookies and things that I would have never eaten. But, you know, on Christmas it is so hard. I woke up at 4am with a wretched headache from eating and grinding and clenching........
I am taking my Soma compound today with my normal Norco I take.
I am looking forward to go to sleep, I am so tired....
you feeling better Buff?

Hi everyone. I hope the holidays were good for you all. Yes, I ate. For 2 days I did nothing but. I woke up this morning and feel about the worst I ever have. My jaw, neck and back are screaming. But it was SO worth it! I have really missed solid food. :)

OK so we all agree it was more the food than the stress of the holidays :)
you starve so long that when those two day of the year roll around (thanksgiving and Christmas) WE give in and EAT and man I ate everything knowing my surgery will be soon i WAY over did it. As much as it hurts I wouldn't take it back for the life of me. the past couple days I've spent with my heating pad, pain pills, muscle relaxers and leftover mashed potatoes hope everyone feels better soon .
Take care

I take it you have gotten awake with one of those headaches? UGH, oh, and then by the time I went to bed last night I was nauseaous from the pain and headache I had from eating all day. Today it is back to the mush that is my ife! I guess it was fun to "eat" again, but I gotta say, it reminded me why I don't eat normal food!
I slept in til 9am and my son is still asleep. I think he is on post holiday crash mode! He was wiped out when he went to bed.
Hope everyone is feeling better this monring. I feel pretty good...that nasy headache is gone.
Buff.......what is the date for your surgery Jan ?

Oh yea I've been awaken by headaches and they seem to be the worst ones i think because you are so tired and want to sleep everyone else is asleep so i just sit up alone and cry which just adds to the pain (least that's what happens to me) My 11 year old daughter is STILL in bed LOL it's 10:30 I'm Glad you are feeling better today i was worried about you cause i know first hand how bad those headaches are . DR's office is to call sometime today we are having insurance issues (thank goodness they deal with that i couldn't take it) I'll be posting a lot I'm sure once it's set in stone due to nerves LOL
So Glad you're feeling better

Thanks Buff! Those nighttime headaches are so terrible and it is so hard because nobody knows the pain they cause. I have thought they would kill me at times.
Hey, something else we have in common....my son is 11. He woke up at 10am, he was so exhausted. My mother in law came to pick him up to take him to her house for a couple days. She is one of the sweetest people. I have been very blessed that way.......I have 2 mother in laws since my hubby's parents are divorced and are both remarried. Luckily they are both wonderful.
Thanks for being concerned for me buff, I know you really understand all of this. Please let me know when you get all the dates set. Tell me details of what exactly they are planning to do in surgery.
Have a good day!

Hi everyone,
Yes I too ate too many cookies but they were sooo good. Chocolate chunk and those frosted animal cookies, yum! Today I am paying the price. Oh well. It's back to mashed potatoes for me. I'm back on Flexeril, 5mg for now. The 10mg made me so tired that I started with the 5mg for now. Once I am used to it I will go to the 10mg. It's going to rain probably tomorrow. The rain makes me hurt so much more than usual. I dread seeing it start to get cloudy outside.
Buff and Karen, it's good to see you. I haven't had the kinds of headaches you guys have had, but I am starting to get headaches every day. Advil works for now, but as soon as it wears off, my headache is back. Anyway, I hope you guys had a nice Christmas. I'm hoping for a better year for all of us in 2005.

Buff,
Yes I take the Flexeril during the day. I take one in the morning when I wake up and one when I get home (around 5:30pm). I started taking it during the day on the weekend so I could get used to it for a couple of days before I had to go back to work. At first it made me really tired even though it's only 5mgs. It was really hard to stay awake. But now I'm used to it and it only makes me a little tired. I clench soo bad at night. It's gotten a little better since I started the Flexeril, but not that much. :( I was at the store the other day and I was going to get a night guard, but it was $27.00 (is that how much they usually cost?) and it even said right on the box "Do not use this product if you have been diagnosed with TMJ". Do you think I should get one? I don't want to do anything to make my pain worse. I don't grind, I only clench. What do you think?

I was told by My DR to discontinue splint I have had two and they made my teeth feel like they were in a vice grip DR said that was due to changes in my joint, jaw ect... I believed him because his wife makes the splints she is a dentist he's a surgeon so he could have had 1000 splints made for me (money would stay in the family) I know many have had Great results from splits maybe I'm just a freak LOL I would check with some others and see what they think. Some things do make your pain worse we are all different But i would really hate to see you spend the money and be in worse shape if it didn't help I know EVERY penny counts after Christmas

Gosh I feel like such a wimp!! i can only take a half of 5mg of Flexeril!! at night!!! They wound up giving me the 10 mg and I try to cut it into 3rds but its still too much..Im wiped out until 12 or so,after my diet coke! Hmm the rain thing is interesting..Its pouring right now and yikes..I have a heating pad on.
Amy alot of people on here have said not to buy the night guard..I did try it..I think it makes it worse and you clench down on it..better to see a DR.

Eternal21,
Thank you for the advice about the nightguard. I won't get one. I'd really like to get a splint from the dentist, but I don't have dental insurance so I'm going to have to save up some money. Maybe when I get my taxes back next year. Do you have a splint? I know of a couple of people who have had good luck with the Mora splint. Unfortunately, they cost around $800-900. Oh well. It's supposed to rain here tomorrow and the rest of the week. My jaw is already feeling it. :( By the way, how long have you been taking the Flexeril?

Hey Amy,
I am wondering if you can find a dentist who would let you pay like half down and then make payments on the rest????? Do your back teeth touch? Here is another option...........My dentist made me a soft, rubbery splint right in his office. It is the one, that I am wearing now. It is a full splint and it has made a HUGE difference in my symptoms. They only cost $180. Why not try something like this? Do you think that would be possible? Also, I really think a muscle relaxer would help you tremendously. I couldn't take Flexeril, it is weird how different meds work for different people.
Keep dry in the rain !!

Amy,I take the flexeril just off and on. Last night I tired a fourth. Still a bit off and have no idea if it does anything other than wipe you out. Yes some people love certain things and some just dont work for others. I am going to ask about soma next week. Of course I am looking for that 'prize' pill that will instantly make my jaw drop and realx and all this stuff will go away.. I dont think that happens with any meds though. I think they just make yopu sleepy or out of it a bit.. I have not done a splint yet..My dentist said I have no room in my mouth, but I think I will call today and see if he has a referral..something has got to work...

Eternal,
I know exactly what you mean about finding the right pill. At first the Flexeril made my sooo tired and I didn't think it was helping. But after I got used to it, I don't get as tired and I do notice it helps me relax my jaw. If you get Soma, please let me know how it works for you. I know it works wonders for some.
Karen,
I don't really know if a splint would help me because I clench really bad. Everyone seems to have different opinions on wether or not it would help me. I know some of the people who clench just end up clenching on the splint and breaking it. My back teeth do touch and I don't think my bite is off but I don't really know. I'm just confused. My dentist told me that I would have to pay for everything up front, so I need to find another one. Isn't Flexeril a muscle relaxer? I thought it was. I think I'm going to start calling around to different dentist right now. I'll let you know what happens.

Amy,
I hope you can find a dentist who will work with you financially. I can tell you this from my experience, if they want their money upfront, than all they care about is the cash cow that tmj will bring. If they are willing to work with you financially then you know they care about you. It is pathetic isn't it?
Flexeril is a muscle relaxer......but it works differently than the soma does. But, I am sure it is person by person. I can only say from myself trying them all, including Valium, that the soma is by far superior for me.
I know that you can clench on a splint. I do it myself. I have also broken a couple of them by clenching and grinding on them. I have a soft, rubbery type one that I wear and it kind of helps your teeth to "bounce" on it and helps with the clenching and of course it can't break since it is rubber. It has worked wonders for me. I am currently wearing it full time instead of the Mora splint. Usually the soft ones are just for sleeping, but I was getting such good relief that my dentist told me to go ahead and wear it all the time and we will see about making a soft mora splint.
I wish you the best...........I know it is so frustrating to try and find yet another dentist and to have to start over. But, keep in mind, if you find one that can help you, it will be worth all the effort.
Karen :)

Karen,
Well my dad called my old orthodontist (from 10 years ago) to see if he could recommend a TMJ specialist for me. He said he could, but he would like to see me first. A consultation is $40 (which is really good, in my opinion), so I made an appt. for next week. I am interested to hear his opinion. I also spoke with a receptionist for another dentist who was really nice. I told her that I didn't have dental insurance, so she said she would talk to the doctor and see if he could work something out for me. She called me back and said that she would give me a discount so the consutation would only be $35. She said that if he couldn't make the right kind of splint for me that he would send me to someone who could. Yay! There are nice people in the nightmare world that is TMJ. I'll let you know what they say when they see me. Wish me luck!

Amy,
Keep pushing for help like that, ok? There are nice people in thid nightmare of tmj, they are just hard to find. Only because of the wonderful person I have found in my dentist now do I even encourage anyone to keep looking. Before him, I had given up hope that there were nice people in this business. I thought maybe all dentists were just heartless jerks.
I just got the latest statement from my dentist on Monday and it had another $514 write off. They can write this stuff off and help those who need help, don't let ANY of them fool you. I am sick of all the $$ we have wasted and I could have been in with this dentist the whole time.
BUff: You are so right, when mommy suffers, the entire house suffers and everyone in it. I hate having a bad day because of the way it makes me act. It is like I just can't even force myself to be kind and patient.
Is everyone ready for the New Year?

You are so right, sometimes I can't even smile at my son because it hurts too much. He has been very understanding that I can't play with him sometimes because my jaw hurts. He is a very sweet little boy. Thank you for telling me to keep trying to find a dentist to work with me on payments. Without you, I would have never even tried. :)
Buff,
It was nice hearing from you. I was wondering how you were doing. Have you got your final surgery date yet? If you don't mind me asking, what is the metal implant supposed to do? Help with opening? You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Happy New Year's Eve everyone,
Amy the metal implant is a partial joint replacement it SHOULD reduce pain improve mobility and pre vent bone fusion it is a common procedure used for failed grafts and arthritis I myself have been trying to do as much research as possible on this. Apparently this procedure has been done for years and years however it seems a little scary to me. I Did finally get my papers it has been approved however DR is on vacation till Monday If I had to guess I would guess it will be set for the week after next. Funny thing is after all the reading up on this i did i began to second guess my decision (i can still eat, i still look like an average person) reading up on this it states plain and clear it CAN cause facial deformities i was starting to get cold feet when my husband stated to me "honey living life shouldn't have to be with your head between your hands fearing you are having a stoke." He of all people, bless his heart wants me back to my old happy go lucky self. He said he can't stand seeing me in so much pain. So I guess there's no backing out He's right I can't go through life putting on a show for others when inside I feel like I am dying. It's time to face this head first again Literally LOL Hope you all have a wonderful New years
P.S don't drink too much we already have enough pain to deal with LOL
Take care

I totally understand the cold feet. I don't know if I could do it. But you have to do what is right for you....make sure you are doing what is right for Buff, not what is right for ANYONE else. Because, ultimately, it will be YOU that suffers.
I am praying for you.......please post as soon as you know the details of your surgery.
I will do good to eat on New Years let alone drink....ha! :)
Have a great evening...

I am praying for you.......please post as soon as you know the details of your surgery.
I will do good to eat on New Years let alone drink....ha! :)
Have a great evening...

Buff,
Thanks for sharing your procedure with me. I understand your being scared, I would be too. But like Karen said, please make sure it's what YOU want to do. I know your husband wants the old you back, but if you end up unhappy with the results after the procedure (and I hope and pray that doesn't happen because I want only the best for you), you might end up resenting him for making you feel like you had to have it done. That being said, have a wonderful New Year! I will be toasting (with soda) you, Karen, and the rest of our TMJ family. I'm not going to drink at all because alcohol mixed with pain meds and muscle relaxers will make for a very sleepy me. :)
Karen,
We are going to a party at one of Michael's friends houses. I imagine I will spend the night watching people get drunk. Oh well. Have a wonderful New Year! :)

Well, I feel like a fat pig. I have eaten all evening. Even with mush I still put it away. hahahaha
I hope you guys have a safe........and fun evening. I don't even go "out" anymore. Between pain meds and the inability to talk for very long......it just doens't seem like it is worth going out.
I'll check in tomorrow.....

Can you help me with my post under "questions about the jaw"? I'm really having a tough time. Thanks, Trucky
