hi,

thanks so much for this service and your help. Here is my situation - I had a cough for a solid week. I had no fever, chills, headache or sore throat. But I was coughing up yellow. I finally went to the Doctor after one week. When he listened to my lungs he said he heard a slight crackle. He put me on a 5 day 750mg Levaquin antibiotic and said it may be pneumonia. He told me to rest.

I finshed the Levaquin on Sat 12/18. Over this past week, the cough is still there. I am still coughing up yellow. I still feel fine, for all intents and purposes. I am out and about. It's just the cough that is really bad. I do not think it overall has gotten any worse - but I feel pretty much on the same level as I did when i went in.

My questions, is this normal? I heard for atypical pneumonia that this is pretty normal and it may take some time for the antibiotics to kill it all. Is it bad I am out and about - even though I overall feel ok? I am also taking Mucinex expectorant - is that ok? When should I expect to feel better?

THANKS a lot.

As long as your still have yellow mucous the infection has not been killed. Go back to the doctor to be sure your lungs are clear.

Do as the doctor suggested, get plenty of rest. A relapse will be worse than the first time around.

Being out and about will expose you to all the other viruses/bacterial infections that other people have.

Some of these respiratory infections have doctors puzzled and have no clue how to cure them. I am battling "tracheal bronchitis" and have started second round of antibiotics. Mucous is clear but sinus drainage, sore throat, coughing, discomfort in chest has increased after being off antibiotic for 3 days. We must keep after the infection.

Crackle in the lungs is a good sign of pneumonia.

I had Atypical pneumonia some years ago. Usually you have a fever at the onset, even if only slight. Regardless, if your doc suspects pneumonia a chest x-ray is usually in order. That was the only way they found mine as my blood test was normal. Here are some other clues to pneumonia - extreme fatigue and loss of appetite along with a dry cough. It usually takes a very long time for all the symptoms to go away, even after starting the antibiotics. It is fine to be out and about as long as you are not coughing on others or kissing, etc. until you have finished the meds and are no longer contagious. You do need a lot of rest, though, as pneumonia makes one feel very weak. After completing the antibiotic protocol, I was still weak and had a dry cough for weeks afterward.
