View Full Version : blowing up blood!

Last Thursday, I thought I was coming down with a cold because I had developed a sore throat and a stuffy nose (but just the left nostril)

Over the weekend, it got worse, and I began blowing up blood anytime I'd blow my nose. (and again, it would only come out of the LEFT side)

So then I started to figure it was a sinus infection (had a headache too) and went to the dr. He gave me a prescription for a strong decongestant and an antibiotic. But he said I should wait 3 days before I fill the antibiotic to make sure it was a bacterial infection and not a viral.

Well this morning, I woke up and was blowing up blood like crazy! Like 5 tissues! Sorry to be so graphic. Then I kept coughing and spitting out blood, and it kept going down my throat and i was tasting it in my mouth. yuck! And it's just blood too that's coming out of my nose. Maybe a tiny bit of clear or slightly yellow mucus, nothing green. But most of the stuff I blow up is just red blood.

Does this sound like something antibiotic would fix? Maybe I should go ahead and get that prescription filled. I had a sinus infection before and once i took antibiotics, i felt better. But I understand that the dr. isn't sure if it is bacterial and i wouldn't want to waste my money on meds I don't need.

But the bloody nose is scaring me. Anybody else get nosebleeds with sinus infections?

When sinuses become raw from viral or bacterial infections, you will have blood come out, amount depending on how raw it is. Sounds like you have a bad case of whatever it is.

Irrigating with salt water is cleansing and healing. It will burn like crazy, but, that is o.k. grit your teeth and do it anyway. I use 1 cup boiled water, 1/2 teaspoon plain salt, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, mix well, strain thru paper coffee filter, fill clean nasal spray bottles. COOL. Hang head off bed (lie on back), squirt a few squirts into each nostril, sniff, turn head side to side slowly, remain their a little bit, say kkkkkk while getting up to keep solution from running down throat, blow nose gently if needed. This will help cut loose junk in the sinuses, is healing, and cleansing. Do this morning and night.

Taking plain Robitussin at bedtime will help keep mucous in throat thinned and throat will be less sore next morning. Elevating head of bed or on pillows will help the postnasal drip.

Taking an anahistimine will help relieve allergy if that is part of your problem. Yes, one side nostril closing goes along with this sort of thing. Sometimes it is one or the other or both. One side of sinuses may be worse than the other. Keep a vaporizor going to keep moisture in the air. Dry makes sinus problems worse.

You may need to use a nasal spray to open up nostril so you can breathe or irrigate. Do not use very often or you will get a rebound making it worse.

There is a bug, not sure whether it is virus or bacterial going around that is very wicked. I have it and was off antibiotic 3 days and it has come back full force. Starting second round of Z-Pak and will see if it knocks it out. The virus or bug caused "tracheal bronchitis" besides the sinuses.

Check out the thread: Sinusitis? or pneumonia?
