Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me, I'm very concerned that this problem may become more severe.

A few weeks ago, a callus formed on each of my big toes from running in uncomfortable shoes. They were on the side of the toenail farther form the other toes. The calluses popped on their own, but another callus reformed on the left toe. Now it looks like that toe has become infected. There is red swelling around the entire toenail and it new flesh has grown on the side of the toenail where it was injured. It looks like a small bump. It slightly bleeds and oozes every day. One part of the swelling is very sensitive to touch but the rest of it is not.

I'm worried that this may become a major issue as it has been bleeding and oozing for over three weeks with no signs of abating. I clean it with rubbing alcohol but this doesn't seem to have any effect. Would soaking in Epsom salts help? Is there an anti-bacterial cream that I could use?

Could someone with a similar experience {Please don't ask someone to reveal any medical background that they may have. Someone with a medical background can certainly post on the board, but can offer an opinion only. This is for peer to peer support and revealing a medical background adds undue weight to what is only to be offererd as an opinion}suggest anything? I will book an appointment with a doctor but I'll have to wait a long time before I see him (Ontario health is really backed up).

I forgot to say that the bump that has formed is basically an open wound that won't heal.

I forgot to say that the bump that has formed is basically an open wound that won't heal.

Running or jogging is VERY hard on the toes as it allows them to rub against the hard leather of the shoes. This also applies too much pressure agains the sides (or the surface) of the nail plate, allowing it to become inflamed, which can lead to infection.

Since the wound is open, bleeding and infected, a visit to your doctor is the best avenue. He can prescribe oral anitbiotics as well as topical treatments.

Thanks Marti. I went to a walk-in clinic yesterday and the doctor told me the same thing, he prescribed an oral antibiotic.

I don't know if this should be a separate thread or if it even belongs in this category, but does anyone know if I can drink alochol while I'm on the anti-biotic Cephalexin?

It's been prescribed to me for the toe, 3 times a day for 10 days. Normally, I drink very, very rarely (don't know if this has any bearing on anything) but I would like to indulge in champagne for New Year's... The pharmacist who filled the prescription said there are no restrictions on alcohol and most online drug references don't list it as a restriction.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I will do further research on my own.
