My boyfriend was injured very badly on Friday. He has a broken jaw and suffered a head injury. As a result, he has amnesia. The doctor's say that his memory will come back in about two weeks, but I was wondering if there was anything I could do to help him along. We talked for close to seven hours yesterday about everything. He's trying very hard to remember, but he just can't. I know that his memory will eventually return, but I was just wondering if there were certain things I could say or do to help him along. Any ideas?

Hi Rachel,
Sorry to hear of your boyfriend having problems. I will suggest a "Memory Book" (small spiral notebook) that he can jot down info such as appts., who came to visit, time to take meds, feelings, future plans, etc. This will act as a portable memory chip until his memory gets better. ( I know this because I had a brain injury and went through short term memory problems and learned to use this same thing from my therapists.)
I also recommend a large calendar to keep by the phone/computer to keep dates posted on as well.
Have faith, be encouraging, and give cues when needed. Good Luck to you both, Dodi
