Sunnybear,
Yucch, 6 a day!:(...especially hard with a drug that causes indigestion.)
Anyway, it's a type of medication that is pretty innocuous in that it really never leaves the digestive canal. It's a bile-sequesterant (attaches to bile) in the intestines and it prevents the bile (which is VERY high in cholesterol) from being reabsorbed. THis bile shortage keeps the liver making more and consequently results in cholesterol being removed from the bloodstream.
Unfortunately it's effects when taken alone are not stellar: (TC down 7, LDL down 15, HDL up 3, TRIG up 10)
It's often given with statins to boost the total effect, especially the LDL effect.
Just checked the price...at a buck a tablet this is a pretty pricey drug for the small bang it delivers.
Did your doctor give you this because you wanted (or had to have) the non-statin route?

yes, ive tried Prevachol, made my legs and arms and back feel sprained.
i have not started the Wolchol yet as i have the flu right now.
i dont like the idea of 6 pills. one months supply cost me $40.
thanks for replying.

sunnybear,
Is your insurance company picking up most of your cost?
Best price I could find was 50 bucks for 60 tablets (10 day supply.) That's a whopping $150 a month!

yes i have insurance. the price above is from a local pharmacy. after i know i can take it i have to do mail order through insurance company and would cost me $50 for 3 months supply. i still havent started taking them as i havent been feeling good. and i dont want to take them :-( but since i have already paid for them i guess i will take them eventually.

It's worth a shot with your good insurance plan.
Only likely problems, if any, will be digestive. Of course, walking around nauseous with diahrrhea all the time is no walk in the park.
Good luck with them.

I take welchol now and to be honest I don't really see that it works unless you are eating super good and working out all the time. 6 pills a days sucks, I can say that is for sure and not to mention they are big pills.
i am going to the doc on friday to see if they can switch me to something else. the problem with being 23 is that i have not had children yet and they will not put me on a statin drug until after I am done having kids. does anyone know of any other drugs for cholesterol that are not statins?
