In order to build and strengthen bone you need to do weight-bearing exercises, such as brisk walking or using weight machines. Try a search on google with "Weight-Bearing Exercises".

Hi there,
Just wanted to add some clarification to the above post. Exercise is terrific for osteoporosis because it can slow or stop further bone loss. Ideal exercises:
Weight lifting - find a weight you can lift 3-4 times but can lift no more after 3 or 4 reps because you're too tired. As your body and muscle strength improves, increase the WEIGHT not the reps.
Impact aerobic exercise - running, dancing etc. walking, swimming and cycling are not suitable.
hope this helps

I would be very careful running if your bones are already fragile and weak. I used to be a serious runner but no longer can. Brisk walking is a form of weight bearing. This, in combination with strength training, is acceptable.

Hi there,
you always need to discuss an exercise program with a health practitioner before engaging in a new regiment.
whilst brisk walking is definitely a form of weight bearing, there is medical research to suggest it doesn't place enough stress on teh bones to help them slow the osteoporotic process.

I like to go up and down a set of stairs in my condo for exercise. Going up strengthens me and the thump, thump, thump on descending puts some stress on my bones.
Hello hummingbirdkiss.....
If I went up and down a set of stairs, I would hear crack, crack, crack all the way down! :) I'm recovering from a hip fracture however. My doctor has me using a recumbent bike where I can gradually build up the resistance. I am not suppose to use a regular stationary bike. I also have two tapes of chair exercises that use 2# weights.
I wish I could go up and down the stairs. If I had done that a long time ago, my bones probably wouldn't be in this shape.....

That was funny! I have lived in colonials all my life so that theory is shot!!! No one has said anything about crunches, safe or not? when everyone talks about just walking to build bones, it just never made sense. I live in Florida so I can walk everyday of the year.
I do biking ,walking and use weights while I walk, but can I still do aerobics? I have a great cd from The Firm that I love to work out to. My doctor didnt say anything about it.
