hi
well ive never done oral but being wanting to. well my problem is, i always have cold sores in my mouth. its unbelievable how i can always have these sores. its been like this ever since i was young. well thats the only reason y i havent done anything w my bf, and told him, the only way is w a condom. but what fun is that? anyways, my question is, can he catch something, even if i do get rid of my sores, i mean, maybe these sores are viruses, and he can catch them from my saliva??? i dont know. i dont want to give him something, and then he gives it right back to me, in my vagina. does anyone know what im talking about?

Use a condom if you're not sure.. it's not fun, but how fun is it catching something or giving somebody something? Are they open sores?

Are they canker sores? Canker sores are on the inside of the mouth, like on the tongue and inside of cheeks. It's unknown as to why people get them but they are not supposed to be contagious.

Are you really sure they are cold sores, i.e. oral herpes? Has a doctor diagnosed them? If they are oral herpes, getting on antiviral surpession therapy should help reduce the outbreaks dramatically. Please see a doctor about it.
Also, you cannot reinfect yourself after the initial outbreak is over. Your body has the antibodies to fight off a new infection. Well, let me backtrack a bit. This is true for most people, but if you really suffer from continuous outbreaks of herpes, then there may be a problem with your immune system and it might be possible to self-infect in some other body location though, if this was the case, you probably would have infected yourself elsewhere long ago.
Continue to use a condom until you can get properly diagnosed and advice by a doctor.

I would still see a doctor, but there is another thing I can think of here. If you have had them as long as you remember, most people are actually born with some form of herpes ... not the STD though. These aren't transmitted that way. My husband gets these canker sores under his mouth all the time. It probably doesn't help that he pops them all the time and makes them worse, but he gets them no matter how hard he tries to stop them. Anything slightly acidic will make them a ton worse. However, I've NEVER had this problem and have never contracted anything from him because of it. See a doctor though, and let me know what they say.

i kinda get the cranker sores and cold sores mixed up, becuz i get them both. so i was reading up on them today, and the cranker sores look like craters, and the cold sores are the ones w fluid inside. and the cold sores are caused by the herpes virus. i know i cant "cure" them, but if i dont have them, i cant spread them, right???? and if i do want the doctor to diagnosed them, do i need to go when i have the sores, or can i go anytime??? i believe i do have a weak immune system, [cuz last yr i got really ill (for like 4 months), and now it seems i can get sick very easy]. but i dont know how to build my immune system up again. well thx for ur replys, i'll look into going to the doctor soon.

No, No, No. Although this is partly true, your body does have antibodies to fight any infection of the same strand of virus, ocular herpes is one of the leading causes of blindness in the western world. This is due to touching coldsores/genital herpes and rubbing your eyes. This is why its extremely important to avoid touching your sores, and if you do (to apply medicine etc) to wash your hands thoroughly afterwards. There have also been documented cases of genital self-infection from coldsores, although this is more unlikely. Just dont touch them!

I believe this auto-infection typically happens during the initial outbreak. That is, you have your first outbreak and you scratch the sore and then you scratch your eyes, you can get it there as you don't have the antibodies to fight it off yet. Once you have the antibodies, the odds of auto-infection are greatly reduced.

ok, yeah im back....i have just one question...or 3
if u have HSV (oral), can u spread them without any symptoms (cold sores or open sores) to the genitals????
if so, is the virus in our saliva or what? and does it matter if he has a cut on himself?
sorry if they r lame questions, but never had to worry about it til now.

You can't "pop" a canker sore--canker sores are ulcers.

1. Yes
2. The virus is shed from the lesion, or where the lesion was. He doesn't need a cut to become infected.

Ok. I have hsv1 on the genitals and I got it from an ex boyfriend who has/had cold sores on his mouth. That is one of the most common ways to get herpes.
And you are correct you can give him herpes, and if he were to turn around and have sex with you once he has already been affected you can also get hsv1 on your genitals. Your body is more likely to reject it, but it is definately possible.
You can spread the virus with no symptoms! It's called viral shedding.
Most people aren't born with HSV, most become infected through out childhood. Mostly from a relative kissing them or what not.
Canker sores are not cold sores. Cold sores are very contagious, canker sores are not! :jester:
