View Full Version : Numbness and tingling on scalp

For the past 10 days my scalp feels as though I have air bubbles under the skin. This must sound crazy because I think so myself, but its the only way to describe it. I have no pain, but the tingling sensation has moved though out the entire area of my scalp and wont team to go away. It started off with pressure on my temples and now feels as though I have chills on my scalp. Anyone know what this could be?

could be a pinched nerve-chiropractic care could help! good luck. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/wink.gif

I have the same thing along with some other symptoms. Please let us know if you figure out what the cause is. I wish I had some answers for you.

Are your ears ringing?

Ive been having similar things. Ive had tingling on my left side of my face and now on my head. Its weird. Ive also been having ear ringing. Could this mean something? I am nervous about it. I am a 30 year old female. Any one know?

Coley91.
I'm from Calgary also. Who have you seen?
I am having the same problems with the ears ringing, head and face numbness and tingling. Doctor said stress and anxiety. He caused the anxiety in the first place by not offering any thoughts just drugs!!!
I do not have anymore anxiety but the symptoms are still there. do you have blurred vision also? Physio and massage therapy can not find an answer to this.
Can someone tell me where to go next?

I went to the doctor a few months ago because I had a really stiff neck and ringing ears. I was prescribed Zoloft and sent on my way! I was told that I suffer from too much stress and was making myself sick. Since then, the only symptom I'm having is the ringing ears and the horrible side effects from the Zoloft. I stopped taking the Zoloft about 4 days ago and it's going pretty well, at least compaired to some of the horrible stories I've read on the Drug Interaction message board. I don't feel normal and have many weird symptoms that I know are from Zoloft related withdrawl.

Your symptoms are very similar to mine. I'm beginning to suspect that poor posture, constant computer work, and maybe even stress are at the root of my problem. I had a pinched nerve and carpal tunnel a year ago and was helped by physical therapy.

Hi... yay that your from calgary too! Apparently, I had a pinched nerve in my neck as well. It was causing the tingling in my head. I got a massage, and the tingling went away. I was helping my husband install a fan... and I was lifting it over my head... suddenly my neck cranked and the tingling re appeared. So... neck trouble can cause tingling in the head... almost a numbness. It scared me pretty bad. ICK... not pleasant when you think its a brain tumor or something. I hope thats what yours is too!

It all started with a pulled back muscle from lifting and then worked it's way up to my neck, head, ears(dr. thought ear infection, but not). I was later dianosed with myofascial pain syndrome and I would be fixed up in no time. That didn' happen either. It's been 2 years and 4 physiotherapists, shrink, 2 doctors and massage therapist. Only 60% better. What I need here is a good massage therapist or physiotherapist in Calgary to go to. Also a new doctor who listens.

Hi everyone, thats for responding. In the past month I have had to take some time off of work and during that time, having eliminated some of my stress as well as getting away from the computer, I noticed the tingling sensations went away. Now that im back to work, the symptoms have returned, but I try not to focus too hard on the computer screen because it seems to trigger it. I dont know if that is the cause, but I would definately have to say that for me, constant strain on the eyes as well as everyday stress is the cause.
I would have to agree you all though, a massage would be a great idea, for whatever the reason!

I have had this for years - sometimes it drives me crazy!! I have seen many doctors and even had a brain MRI. They say it's stress and anxiety.

I may try the massage route - i am convinced there is something wrong with my neck. They never listen.

Maybe I am just a hypocondriac?

Wow, This is amazing I thought I was the only one in the world w/ this unexplainable tingling sensation. The tingling in my head has gotten considerably worse. Its now more of numbness..I even notice visible signs of the problem. The skin in my forehead for instance has shown signs of adnormal wrinkling and discoloration. Its pretty weird. I'm wondering if this a form of brain disfunction. The sensations has turned my focus inward and made it increasingly difficult to maintain normal healthy relationships. I don't know if its depression, stress, a nerve problem..or what. Everyone in my family senses something is wrong, but don't know what to do..I try to explain that it feels like there is a blockage in my forehead..but its just to ludicrous to understand. I have always been a pretty charismatic, outgoing guy, so this has sort of changed my life quite a bit..I keep waiting for it to go away but it hasn't and its been two years. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate the advice. Thanks. Matt

Hi Matt,

I'm not far from you. Would be good to meet and knock heads together. It turned me into a worry wart of immense proportions.

I am so glad I came upon this message board. I have had the tingling sensation on the left side of my head for some time now, but I thought it was due to not taking my Lexapro (for anxiety depression) on a regular basis. There has been little or no stress in my life since dropping my Spring Term in college, so that's a plus. But the head always starts out tingling and then the numbness occurs. It lasts for a brief moment, usually not painful but there's a definite pressure felt, but it has become more regular. I also have dizziness when sleeping, with my eyes closed. My left hand often contracts, pulling all my fingers together, which is often quite uncomfortable. I spoke with a new Dr. today and she scheduled me for a CT. Said I passed the physical exam (squeezing of the hands, pressing on your feet, walking in a straight line, etc) but she was uneasy about the numbness. Wanted to make sure I didn't have a blood clot or a brain tumor. What I find fascinating is that almost everyone here has the tingling on the left side, is this correct? And that it helps being away from a computer? I'm a writer and I'm always in front of my computer. I'm not sure if my ears ever ring. This is all very interesting. Thank you for your comments. I don't feel so alone any more.

I have the tingling symptom in the top of my ear lobes and on my scalp (good description with the water bubbles [singing: "Tiny Bubbles"]...) I know that it is a precursor of a panic attack. When I get it, I usually am hit with a massive panic attack within a day, unless I take my medication (Clonopin and/or Xanax).
Of course, knowing that this is a sign makes me more anxious about NOT having a panic attack - which makes the tingling worse - a vicious circle.
I have started bio-feedback, and if I could just learn to relax more, I think that is a good way of handling the tension!

I've been experiencing the same! I thought I was alone! I have checked online and found NOTHING till this board. And, yes, it's the left side!

I just started Wellbutrin for postpartum - and wondered if that had anything to do with it. I have had anxiety attacks in the past - but not for a long time. It's the strangest feeling - almost like something crawling on my scalp about three inches above my left ear, then the feeling spreads downward until my left ear up tingle, then feel almost numb, but not quite... It's only been the last week or so - please tell me it will get better or stay the same.. that's my biggest concern, that it may get worse... (Well, other than what's causing it! - but everything I read says that the scalp is controlled by the cervical nerve - so I feel like it is probably a pinched nerve?)

Anyone have any new developments or word?

I have a new physician who scheduled me for the CT, which came back saying that everything was fine. She's kind of a flack and I mentioned to her about some of the same symptoms you all were having. I told her how I had been treated for anxiety but she dismissed that and said that I needed to see a neurologist. But she also prescribed Xanax for me. It's supposed to make you drowsy but it does nothing for me. To help the doctors out I've decided to keep a journal of how often my head tingles, and how often my left hand spasms. And let me tell you, I didn't realize it was happening as often as it is. It seems strange to think that this is all due to panic attacks. Especially when the tingling/numbness happens so randomly. Wow! Here I am spending all this money and everyone here is probably right--it's anxiety. Well, I do hope the Xanax works because it's not so far. Now I have to wait and see the neurologist. Yippy! Thanx everyone!

I was wondering if anyone else with this problem also has a habit of grinding their teeth. I've noticed lately (pretty much just since this has started) that when I'm stressed (sometimes when I dont' even realize I'm stressed) I have been grinding and clenching my teeth - when I notice it, I intentionally try to relax my jaw and facial muscles.. Often when I feel the tingling, I realize I'm grinding my teeth as well... could be two separate issues, linked by stress, but perhaps not CAUSED by stress... *shrug* Still looking for answers....

Hi Everyone
I had many of the same symptoms as all of you in 1995. It started with a terrible headache and a weakness in my right arm and leg, and when I woke up in the morning, I had paralysis down my whole right side, my face drooped, as did the corner of my eye. I had slurred speech and my short term memory was so bad I couldn't remember what I was trying to say from the beginning of a sentence to the end of it. Doctors thought I had a stroke, but after an MRI, CATscan, and doppler ultrasound nothing was found. I put it down to stress, and started living healthier, walking great distances and watching what I ate. I was not on anti-anxiety or anti-depressant medication at that time.

I had the odd tingling through the years but nothing lasting. Then in November of 2002, I woke up in the middle of the night and my right side of my face was drooping again, and I had some minor tingling in my right arm. I started having problems with drooling out of the right side of my mouth at night. I had some difficulty with blurred vision and some headaches and now chest pain as well. Anyway, Doctors sent me for another MRI. This time they found a bulge in one of the main arteries in my brain where the arteries begin to branch. I am now awating a Angio-CATscan. They have also diagnosed me with sleep apnea. They also discovered that I have a high pressure in my eyes which can result in glaucoma. I am now on anti-anxiety meds. They think I may have a brain aneurism. Its important to note that when I started having my first batch of symptoms in 1995, I was 36 years old. I am now 44. My symptoms are very similar to those of you who have already responded on this bulletin board. I just wanted to share my story with all of you.

I've had similar sensations, all related to TMJ and a misaligned bite.

Maybe a dental evaluation is in order?

HI all,
It's nice to know that im not alone with this problem. The consensus seems to be that Stress is the cause of this annoying tingling sensation on the scalp. I also find it interesting that almost everyone mentioned that its tends to be on the left side of the scalp. Any ideas as to what that means?
Take care and thanks for all the posts.

I have read most of the posts and have noticed how I have most of the same symptoms. I'm 16 and I have TMJ and anxiety/panic disorders. I have experienced the tingling sensations on my scalp, and right now I am feeling the tingling in my right arm/wrist. I also have headaches, is this all just from anxiety and TMJ? or should I look further into it?

Hi all,
I have had the tingling scalp and such as well. Ive had mri's, ct scans and an eeg done. Come to find out, I have partial complex seizures and the mri showed a pineal cyst. I also have post truamatic stress disorder because all my symptoms came from a blow to the head I recieved at a dept. store and also needed staples to close the wound. Im not sure if any of you have had any head or neck injuries, but we seem to have the tingling and numbness in common. My fingers and feet also use to tingle or should i explain like i had my feet in a bees nest. The docs put that down to the topamax that i was on for the seizures, needless to say i was switched to keppra and most of the tingling has gone away. Well excpept for the scalp tingles. I have a bulging disc too and maybe it has something to do with pressure on the nerves or something. I am still in the process of docs so who knows what else they will diagnos me with. Before the accident I had none of this, and wasnt that stressed (even though i have 4 small children). Now the stress is major and nobody is sure if the stress and anxiety or the PTSD is the cause of all this since i also have neurology probs. All though i have found out that some people with pineal cysts have symptoms, my neurologists seems to think that its nothing to be concerned with. And also some people can have these cysts and not even now it since childhood. Im at the point of who knows anymore. I do hope that you all find out the cause and if so , to share because id like good news for a change.. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif take care and know that you're not alone and that also gives me comfort...
God Bless,
Tigre

My baby daughter was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor the size of a tennis ball this time last year. There were no symptoms at the time or so I thought but researching brain tumors I have come across the fact that these can cause a funny tingling sensation on the scalp. When my daughter was drinking her bottle she would always absentmindedly scratch at her head. I would askn for a CT scan to be performed just to rule this out.

Man this tingling sensation on my scalp is so annoying! Has anyone taken any kind of medication for this problem, and has it helped? I guess I should go to a neurologist, but like many of you, seems as though finding answers to the problems listed on this website seem few and far between.

Hi, I was so surprised to see so many with this same strange symptom. I am also having this tingling, crawling sensation on small part of my left scalp. It comes and goes and sometimes I have some discomfort, like I bumped my head. I am a migraine sufferer and this is the same side my migraines appear on.

Yes it can be cervical!!!! I had fusion in march, c 5-6-7 and now have numbness, tingling on the right side of my face and ear. I was treated for ear infections etc. My mouth even goes numb, into my eye. I am seeing a neurologist Friday for further evalution. My arms and legs get numb and tingling too, also had L5 disc removed, and have L3-5 bulging with ddd, arthritis too. Yep a mess, and only 47, with no accidents http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/confused.gif but anyway ck out the neck , sure can cause these symptoms! especially working all day on a computer!!

I've had this off and on for several months. But mine starts on the right side - around my eye. And my eyeball feels kind of numb - like when it's dilated. But it's not numb to the touch. If it's really bad, the tingling "creepy-crawlies" move back up my forehead and then start surrounding my head. So creepy. The numbness feeling around my eye has almost constantly been there for 2 months, at different stages of discomfort.

My various doctors think it's atypical migraines. Though the pain doc is sending me for biofeedback therapy. We'll see how that goes. I was taking depakote which did seem to help - but I can't take it anymore.

I had an MRI of cervical spine which was fine. The MRI of my brain was ok - he said there is a small spot - right side of my head, that could either be just a space, or some kind of cyst (probably something I was born with). He said we can do another MRI in a year, he wouldn't worry about it at all. But regardless the location of it shouldn't be the cause of these problems.

I am going to have someone else look at the MRI and CT scans just to be safe. They scare me a bit.

I also have major sinus headaches that seem to precede the tingling, most of the time. Anyone else?

I AM SO GLAD i found this message board. like someone else said, i dont feel alone anymore.

i've been having this feeling for a few weeks now, and as days go by, i was researching more and more on the web fearing the worst... a brain tumor. the more i read about it, the more symptoms i seemed to have discovered.

i was actually in tears last night fearing not so much for my life, but for my family.

but this post hit the nail on the head (no pun intended http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif ). and yes i do sit in front of a computer pretty much all day... :\

the reason i haven't visited a doctor is because i have no health insurance and little money. i'm a full time college student paying my own way, so i'm scared of what an MRI would cost. (I was considering getting one done because of the symptoms)

May I ask what kind of costs have been incurred for the doctor visits and medications? pinched nerve.. zoloft..

thanks for your help and support http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif
i'm feeling better already

Hi,I posted earlier about having the symptoms of crawling and numb sensation on the left side of my scalp. Strange, but the symptoms have stopped since I changed the shampoo I was using. Could be a coincidence, but maybe it was an allergic reaction. If the symptoms don't return then I'll be convinced.

hi all, i have benign intracranial hypertension (also known as pseudotumor cerebri and idiopathic ih) and during diagnosis i was told by my gp that the excruciating headaches were anxiety,if only,my brain was being squashed.so if u think that it isnt anxiety i suggest u get to a neuro and if u have any visual probs then get to a neuro opthalmologist now as damage to eyes from the brain isnt always reversable and is a big sign of a tumor or ptc, bih, iih.I also suffer tingling/pins and needles which are so bad some days that im nearly in tears, these are mainly on the feet and hands but will go on any part of my body and i have bad dizziness too along with alot of other symptons,if your mri come back clean then id ask to b checked for this as its a rare disease and unknown.

This all sounds so familiar. I started getting tingling and numbness about 2 years ago. I was also getting pins and needles in my arms and legs, along with headaches, burning sensations in my arms and forhetfulness. GP thought it was MS so I had an MRI but that was normal. Went to a neurologist and he diagnosed me with Fibromyalgia.
2 years later and I'm suffering similar symptoms again, only this time there are two small indetations on my forhead, just back from the hairline. Went back to GP and the GP said the indentaions were normal head lumps/bumps. She said I was suffering from high anxiety and that was causing the scalp and face tingling. I also suffer with mild headaches more often than not and the GP also put that down to anxiety.I requested another MRI and she refused. She did say she would refer me to a neurolgist again though.
Anyone else have this scenario?

I get tingling in my head alot too... it scares me so much. It happens several times a day and sometimes last a while. My head gets these little pains all over and sometimes in one spot it is tight or pressure like. My neck is always hurting and is very stiff. My neck sometimes hurts bad in the front where the veins are and I worry. I am afraid I have a brain tumor. Sometimes I can put my head down and when I lift it up it feels pressure and slight pain. Sometimes my head gets real hot and feels like it is on fire. I am so scared.

Hi there,

I think I've been having a simliar kinda thing happening to me just lately, also about 5-6 years ago.

It feels numb, and tingly. It seems to be at the top of my eyes/eyebrows and upto my forehead, as though some hair has fallen down on to my face. It kinda worries me, as well as driving me crazy, I also wonder if it is stress related as I have been just lately. Should I go and have my eyes checked out agian at the opticians?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi Everyone,

Just started having this tingling sensation on Friday. It started on the right side of my head, a bit behind the temple, towards the ear. It was more of a pain than a tingle at that time. Almost a week later, I have it now on the left side of my head, centralized near the jaw joint by the left ear. Went Monday to the ER to get it checked out - CAT Scan and blood tests came back negative. I would like to visit a specialist - maybe get an MRI. I am going to my GP doctor tomorrow for a follow-up. The sensation is tingly, slightly numb feeling, kind of like the water bubbles as described in a post above. I don't know if I can correlate the events, but I was on Lipitor 20 mg since Nov. 2002. I went to the doctor last week to see if I should change medication, since I was experiencing muscle pain in calves, tricep, chest. He suggested trying Crestor, a new statin drug. I took only 2 doses, one on Wed, the next on Thurs. On Friday afternoon, I felt a slight pop or click sensation about an inch above my right ear. I stopped taking the Crestor. Then I got the headache in that same spot. I can't necessarily correlate the statin drugs to the pain, but it was the only thing that I had changed. I have been stressed out a bit - was laid off in Nov. 2002 until July 2003. Have a baby who is teething, so I'm not getting good sleep. Have a new job, & haven't seen my friends for awhile. Could be depressed, stressed, TMJ, etc. Hope to find out soon. Thanks to all who posted on this topic.

Hi all,
I still have the numbness and tingling after all these months and now to top it off i have a continuous tremor in my right arm and hand...this just started happening more after a major anxiety attack that lasted 4 hours (this past saturday) and an ER trip who said it was all due to anxiety. But the numbness comes every now and again but the tremors are now non stop whether its a small tremor to sometimes my hand is shaking so bad i cant stop it even if i sit on it.. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif. Any advice? My mom thinks its my meds : 2000mg keppra, 150mg zoloft and xanax. The doc at the er told me to go to my psychiatrist and up my xanax because it doesnt seem to be helping. I see him tomorrow. Im scared because its always something lately. I also have a pineal cyst and bulging disc from this head injury so I am so confused. Is it from seizures...meds...the bulging disc..bilateral carparal tunnel syndrome (that i now have) or what? Any help would be appreciated. Im going nuts now lol. Take care all,
Tigre

I'm a 30 year old graduate student with similiar symptoms. One night after an eight hour long stint on the computer (not a regular occurence)-I started having shooting pain and tingling on my upper back--it got worse--within a few days the skin on my right arm started going numb--eventually I have alternating numbness and tingling in both of my legs--A couple of weeks later I strained my upper back and shoulder and the symptoms worsened, but I was having no problem functioning or teaching classes. I saw a neurologist and he said it was oversensitivity He didn't elaborate on this diagnosis and later told me that he thought I suffered from somatization (essentially he believed that I was subconsciously causing my own symptoms)--by the way he took no tests prescibed me Trazadone. I immediately started having strange side effects- pressure in my head, neck, and chest-he kept me on the medication anyway (I suspect the nurse didn't tell the Dr. about my sideffects). After stopping the medication I felt better for a short time (my original symptoms were never helped or made worse by this medication). The pressure in my head and chest returned and actually became worse after a visit to a chiropractor-- Now I have a tight numb feeling on my forehead, and intense pressure in the back of my head and neck, and strange tingling and itchy sensations in my head. It's always there-never quite goes away although sometimes it gets worse. It is affecting my short term memory and sometimes I also have a difficult time reading- I've had a MRI of my brain and nothing conclusive was found. I've seen two psychologists who have assured me this is not simply stress. They also did not think that it was a psychological problem. My general Dr and new neurologist have tested me for viritually every disease and condition and have found nothing-everything comes back normal. One of my doctors (the others disagree) has suggested that it might be beign intercranial hypertension--but at this point I am reluctant to have a lumbar puncture-I don't really need my head to feel worse. At this point my neurologist is at a loss to explain what is wrong with me. I'm having an MRI of my spine tommorrow-and while I hope they don't find anything-it is horrible to have such strange symptoms without a reason. I'm still working and taking care of my children- most of the time I try to ignore the symptoms and do my best to concentrate. Does anyone have any ideas?

I too have a tingling in my scalp/head. Back of head, left side near occipital lobe. bothering me off and on for 1.5 years. Comes and goes. Lately it has been omnipresent and radiates around and above my left ear, when stressed or really busy at work. Feels sort of like a bug under my scalp with the occasional twinging pain. had CT scan done in FL June 2002 - negative on anything. Present Dr here in NS says tension headache and prescribed anti inflammatories, so far hasn't helped in a week. This isn't really painful, just more irritating and of course the stress and worry it causes by not knowing. I spend a lot of time on the computer and when not on it I'm busy running the restaurant that I own. Massage therapist spent two hours with me two nights ago and is baffled. He has suggested acupuncture and neurologist. Last couple of days the pain has been worse.
We're all grasping at straws on this forum - I wish I had an answer for you, or you had an answer for me

I have been experiencing these types of symptoms for about a month - I suggest to all, get an MRI of the Brain, if anything just to have the piece of mind that you don't have a tumor or previous stroke is relief enough, it makes dealing with the symptoms a little easier. Has anybody heard of Trigeminal Neuralgia, my neurologist gave me NERONTIN for this. I have been experiencing left side facial tingling that goes from above my eyebrow to my lower part of my cheek bone, it almost feels like my skin is really tight. Brain MRI came back normal - MRI C-spine did show 2 bulging discs C5-6 & C6-7, but Nero doc. does not think this is the cause of facial tingling. He said that all facial sensation stems from the Cranial Nerve - located just above you temples. The NERONTIN seems to help, but not totally, I occasionally will also get bouts of left sensation, not pain, not weakness, just feels different (if that makes any since) I personally think it is ANXIETY, I am currently taking BUSPAR for the anxiety, only been on it for a week so results are unknown. Not that I would wish these symptoms on anyone, but it's nice to know there are others out there you feel the same. I would be interested to know of any other Doctors diagnoses you may have heard... Take Care

I know this may sound trite, but you might attempt to focus your energy ******d...as opposed to internally.

It has helped, albeit limitedly, for my similar condition.

Wow. I found this site thru a search engine. I have been feeling a tingling sensation in my scalp also for a few years now. It will come and go with no regularity. I describe mine as if you were to be wearing a baseball cap snug for a while and then take it off. You still kinda feel like you have it on. Also I feel the tip of my right ear as if someone was lightly squeezing it, but not painful. There are no other symptoms I can tell. It just drives you nuts when you resting and most times by now when I am busy I just put it out of my mind. I am taking no drugs, but about 11 years ago I tried to take 32 sominex sleeping pills 2 different times. There is a history of cancer in my family and that has me worried too. I am just hoping that it is stress.........emotional and physical.

hello,
I too am having this tingle/itch in the head feeling. I have posted under several topics to try and find some answers. It seems like this is very similar. Mine to is mostly on the left side, sometimes forehead. Feels like a creepy crawly, tingle. It can last up to a half hour or longer, and all times of the day. i hate it, the only relief I get is from my Lorazepam. The DR call it stress for me. Well easy for them, sometiimes I feel like im going to go crazy from this sensation. It really consumes me when its at its peak. I get so aggitated when it is happening. Anyone else get real irritated with this? Like just don't want to listen to any noise, and I don't know. This sucks.

 Hello everyone!!

Guess what?? I have had this for over 10 years on/off, but with mine, it does not happen enough to really piss me off. Thank GOD! I've had numerous M.R.I.'s also, blood, etc..and have been told by my Psych that it is nerves/anxiety. Who knows? If you have had the tests, do not knock yourself out with worry. At least it comes and goes and is not an everyday occurence and does not last long when it does come along. I also have been on anti-dep and anxiety med's for over 15 years and do heavy computer work. Like I said, who knows? Anxiety, pinched nerves, at least it's not a serious problem. I can live with it. Hope I helped some! :p Take care and God Bless.

Hey all! Cant believe i didnt find this sooner, i used to post on here when i first got anxiety. Anyways, about a year ago i started getting the tingling sensations. If someone were to take a feather and move it across small areas of my scalp, that is what my scalp tingles feel like. It drives me INSANE. It feels as though hairs are falling out and just falling other hairs, causing the tingling sensation..

I get so afraid that it actually is hairs falling out that I dont want to shampoo my hair the next morning out of fear ill lose my hair.

This tingling crap is so damn frustrating..it seems now to only come at night..sometimes i just want to take my hand and keep it tightly pressed against my scalp at night. I dont know what to do about it..i try to not concentrate on it, but the anticipation of it coming again leaves you focused on your scalp sensations.

What I have noticed is that we all have had a history of anxiety and or anxiety attacks. We may have had anxiety for a while before the scalp tingling came along, but we all had it. This leads me to believe that it is in fact anxiety, even if we dont suffer from it as bad as we once did. I dont know what else it could be, unless it is in fact hairs falling out of our heads.
I hate this crap..im always touching my head now or getting the urge to shake my head around. this is the WORST

OK - great to find you all.

I have had all the tests you describe - MRI, caratoid artery, blood work - "all within normal range."

Thankfully - listening to y'all, we seem to have a phenomenon - and not MS or TIA or tumors.

A few questions Have any of you had IBS? Are any of you menopausal? What about B12 deficiency? How about Kundalini? Does the tingling make you feel lightheaded/dizzy too? Is is worse when you are tired, goes away when you are excercising or busy with something diverting?

I am a 53 year old woman, had IBS for 13 years - then found the superb www.HelpforIBS.com and I am symptom free - Hurrah! But almost as soon as I got over the IBS I got this tingling. IBS is food/anxiety driven.

I am in the middle of my second big run of facial and scalp tingling - the last series lasted a few weeks, a few months ago. It went away as soon as I had the tests (expensive, terrifying) and went on vacation.

My face and head are "going off" tonight - feelings of tight, vibrant energy have moved from the crown of my scalp, to a straight line from my mouth to my eyebrow on the left side (!) to now my left thumb, right cheek, the back of my head and intensely grasping my chin.

I have a great deal of stress in my work, but am happy and otherwise healthy. I think I am not stressed or anxious - until these things manifest themselves in my body! What is it? What do you think we have? Have you found anything to take the symptoms away?

THANKS!

I have had the same feeling the last few weeks. Nothing on my face, but slight burning/tingling on my scalp that is constant almost throughout the day with VERY light headaches (probably a 2 out of 10). I am kind of freaking out, but I am wondering it is too soon to go to the doctor. i am not taking any medication/ never have…what gives.

After reading a lot of these posts I think it has been brought on by anxiety (at least I hope so). I friend of my fathers has had a rare blood disorder for the last 6 years, two weeks ago he was diagnosed with two inoperable brain tumors, and died this past Friday. Though I wasn’t really close to him, I have been thinking a lot about it in general; especially RIGHT before I go to bed. Hopefully this is what is causing it, but I can’t be sure which makes me more nervous, which probably continues to bring it on….round and round we go…PLEASE HELP!!

Mine has been better - on and off - since I wrote. I had a Spectracell test done - and it reported that I am very low on B12 (among many other vitamins and minerals due I think to the IBS eating issues).

They say B12 is hard to absorb via pills, so I now have a B12 patch.

I think my symptoms can best be described as migratory, peripheral neuropathy - and I have a feeling it is related to stress, IBS and menopause.

Try getting a B12 shot or patch - and exercise. I never get it when I am exercising.

And good luck!

Hi all,
I have had the most bizarre symptoms for two years now...burning tingling head, crawling from my neck up to my scalp, burning sinuses, eye pain, ear aches, tooth aches, jaw pain etc.....
I had CTS, MRIs, scintographies etc...done but with little success. Then I got some viral results back...I tested positive for about 6 Herpes viruses of which 4 were somewhat active. I was labelled Chronic Fatigue for two years and now I know where it all blew in from. Viruses attack your nervous system. They will not show up on any imaging tests. I also have temporal artertis on the right side of my head which makes me a bit nervous in hot weather and under strenous physical work.
The nerve pain is debilitating on days, I can live with the hands and feet, but the tingling head and bizarre head pressure, eye pain and jaw ache drive me insane. Pain killers do nothing and neurological meds turn me into a zombie.
Anyway,
Just another thought on what it could be from my own experience.

Wow - there are so many causes that you bring up - that we had not heard before..... What were the tests for the viruses? Are there any meds or homeopathic remedies that you have found that work?

What is temporal arteris?

Someone said cough medicine works for the tingling - have you tried that?

Hi there again,
At first I was freaked out by the symptoms because carcinoma cancer has a special face tingling phenomenom as its symptom which is usually following a meal, drinking, or any excitement.
I had cancer ruled out at the beginning also because of the general lymphedenopathy I had had.
Once evrything obvious had been ruled out and nothing was left, one doctor finally took my advice to test for viruses (I had had a hunch for a while that it could be this) and HHV1, 2, EBV, CMV and HHV6 came back positive with the EBV and HHV6 being the highest. By the time the results came back I even underwent some form of liver hepatitis so the pain was excruciating. I am not an expert and I always forget which of the Herpes travels along your nerves (definitely Herpes Zoster(chicken pox)) and Herpes 1 I think (somebody correct me if I am wrong). I am a senisitive person so it seems that HHV1 or 2 have taken up momentum in the last three months but they will go unnoticed in most of the population. Doctors underestimate this and when I finally found a dr who would listen to me (a countless no. brushed me away as a lunatic) I was told that not many drs know what to do with this and prefer to send you to the shrink than take care of it. It may not be your problem but it has sure been an interesting road to discovering this problem for me over the past two years. The hell I had been through, all of the dental work I had done for nothing etc... I once had a herpes facialis (cold sore) strip across my entire chin a few years back and it seems that the location of it was stored in my nerve memory and the stress and EBV I had had in the past two years "re-awoke" it. It is literally travelling along the trigeminal nerve, from the 1st molar (which is healthy) to my ear and into my eye causing sinus disfunction, head pressure and facial tingling. The stage you all describe was a half a year ago for me when I thought the entire joke had reached its peak and I had all of my wisdoms removed because they were being blamed for it. On and off, my the sides of my face not only burn and tingle up to my temples but they go numb and cause me to lose 100 % control of my speech and to drool a bit. I have learnt how to control that situation now (I am a teacher) so it is not so depressing.
Somebody mentioned IBS i their post which as a dr, would be a hint for me to test viruses. Once again, from all of my reading, IBS is connected with Herpes and Herpes are connected with CFS which is something that is difficult to diagnose.
Temporal Arteritis is artery inflammation so basically I have a sharp lump on my right temple just where the hairline begins because the "temporal" artery is inflammed. I have had it for 6 months and it will not go away. It can cause numbness, vision problems and jaw pain as well. The whole incredible thing about this for me and the new dentist I have who actually cares to help is the way it is affecting my mouth. It has baffled dental clinics and had dentists send me away saying that maybe I am stressed and need a shrink. I am now in agony because of an experiment my ddt and I have started, root canaling my first left molar which seems to be sitting on a trigger point. He has opened Pandora's box. The tooth was healthy when he started and whatever is living underneath, he is not sure whether it is viral or bacterial is causing excruciating pain and the trigeminal neuralgia on the left side.
It has been a long road and recovery is far away...I see it more like learning to live with it at the moment which is difficult because it all comes and goes as it pleases. I have been given Neurological meds and one of them is quite good because it doesn't have any severe side effects and B Complex is a must. I have always leaned towards herbs so I drink a lot of herbal teas. When I feel the "attack coming" on it is best to relax and I find that the symptoms are less severe then.
What other symptoms do you have? Before it starts, do you feel like a "load" is coming on? That will help determine whether or not it is appropriate to have your viral titers checked.
Please write a bit more about your symptoms.
Thanks....this really does interest me. The human body is precious and fascinating thing.

Briefly, here's my background. About 2 years ago, I got my first corporate desk job (staring at a computer). Over the course of a year and a half, I had gained 30 lbs, stopped sleeping as well, and gotten high blood pressure. Then, about 6 months ago I went to the ER for what they said was a panic attack.

Since, even though I'm exercising more, the symptoms have gotten worse. I started getting tingling in the temples. I've noticed pains in my chest, sometimes pain and numbness in my extremities. I've started getting some form of dermatitis around my nose. In the last month, the tingling has moved around my scalp, and I'm also getting pressure headaches, mostly the temples but also the top of the head. Blurry eyes, my first-ever cavity, and so-on. All of this affecting a guy who was a very fit US Marine just 4 years ago!

Needless to say, this is freaking me out a bit. Anyone suffering from physical anxiety symptoms understands the ugly circle they cause.

I understand what anxiety causes the body to do (i.e., the fight or flight response). Surely, over long periods of time, this can exacerbate nearly any condition in the body, since the immune system, and other healing faculties, are impaired.

I, however, find it hard to believe that these symptoms can be without some physical cause. Certainly they can be myriad...sinus infections, nerve damage, arterial imflammation, etc. With such a variety of possible causes, and such a variety of symptoms, it's easy to see why doctors can just attribute it to stress.

My personal approach will be four-fold. First, rule out the obvious. I will go to the doctor and insist on checks for tumors, viral infections, cysts, nerve damage, and so forth. Hopefully that will come back clear.

Secondly, I will go to a naturopathic physician to help alter my diet and lifestyle to maximize my body's healing ability.

Thirdly, I will begin regular relaxation therapies (massage, yoga, etc., whatever I can find) as well as continue to exercise.

And finally, I'm going to seriously evaluate what's important in life. Sure, staring at a computer all day pays very well. But I have to ask myself if it's worth it; we only have our health once.

I'll hopefully be around in a few months to update everyone :) Thanks for the posts folks. If anyone wants to discuss and/or share on the subject, I'm very happy to. Write me at gregburns8@gmail.com.

Thanks

I have something strange happen when I eat spicy foods. I was a cook for like 20 years. I always joked something was spicy enough because my head was tingling. It happened the most when eating chili. Some other spicy things would set it off. It did not have to be very hot spicy to set it off. It would last for about 30 min and go away. Does anyone else have this problem:confused:

Hi ALL:

OK - Spicy foods I cannot eat at all (no interest and no stomach for it).

What is helping me is that I had a spectra cell test - where they culture your cells and find out what vitamins and minerals you are low on. In my case, after 13 years of IBS (now symptom free with acacia fiber) I was 35 - 85% deficient(!) in things like B6 and B12. That has gotten me to look at pernicious anemia as a possible cause. I am compiling info. for the neurologist - who I see again on the 18th - but that to me is looking like what it is that I "have." And PS - it is exacerbated by stress - I can almost bring on symptoms, by thinking about it!

Have a nice day - and go see Al Gore's movie - he is RIGHT about what is happening to our weather - and we are all affected by this heat (and rain and flooding and changes.) Our bodies are telling us that something is up.

Hi everyone,

I sure am glad I found this post. I too have been experiencing this tingling forehead/scalp phenomenon and it has been freaking me out. It started a couple weeks ago after a long night of sitting infront of my computer screen. the next day it just felt like a headache, but the next few days brought on the tingling. It went away for a few days and then recently came back. It seems to worse at night (which makes it so hard to sleep). Also like most others i suffer from anxiety and anxiety attacks. These two things do not go together well. i have been up for nights filled with anxiety regarding the tingling (which is also on the left side) and I'm so afraid it may be something serious (because every few pages of posts I come across someone who warns of brain tumors). my anxiety has caused me to go to the emergency room a few times in the past and I simply cannot afford it. Although, I can't afford not to go either because what if this is the one time that i should have gone. Wow, this is all very stressful. Good luck everyone.

You should just go to your primary care physician and ask for medicine management of your anxiety and ask if he can order a scan for your head because you are concerned about tumor. This is much less expensive than a trip to the ER and you don't have to pay the doc bill all at once, just make sure you pay something, even if its 5 bucks a month... of course try to pay as much as you can, but by paying something they can't take you to collections, you could even call their billing number and set up a payment plan probably. Good Luck to you and God Bless.

Hi y'all - great to discover many with identical symptoms - helps me to realize that (1) I'm not crazy & (2) I might be able to make it better! Quick bio & history: 43 year old guy, married, kids, last 18.5 years at Umungous Pkg Shipping company on computers, 3 yrs before that on computers, then USMC; overall healthy, generally good diet, not that good at the excercise!

First neuro related problem 9/2004 when I spent 4 solid days (and I mean solid, with little movement) on PC at desk. 5th day (friday) started vacation. Drove a few hours to vacation site, went to sign into hotel and could not hold or control the pen, nevermind try to sign my name. Was a little scared. This continued for next 5 days, worse before better. Other symptoms were that left hand was almost as bad, both forearms felt as if they were extremely swollen, but no visual/physical change to forearms. After return from vacation, went to Dr who chkd me out and said was "Computer Related Syndrome" (which I have started to look for on web), recommended to neck stretching & don't sit at PC for any more than 20-30 minute intervals. I have not spent "solid" time on PC since and have not had re-occurence.

Roll forward to 10/2006 (5 months ago), I began getting the left scalp tingling that the majority of people in this thread describe. Also more frequent headaches, usually temporal and sore eyes. Also first time I felt like I had heart attack (very scary), have had chest pressure/discomfort on and off since, but also have a sinus infection (now clearing up since I finally went to Dr who has me on Amox). Still chest symptoms, sinus clearing up, tingles on and off always (like right now).

So, from what you're all saying, would you say the tingling is not going to completely go away, but that I can relieve it some if I lower stress and anxiety?

Thanks! ßß

I am finding that mine may be related to menopause - estrogen cream really takes the edge off of it. From having it daily for a few months - I am now down to an occasional twinge - maybe once or twice a month? (related to if I have used th cream that day or not.) Obviously you don't have menopause -but it might be hormones (and computer and stress.)

And just for the record - with this and anything else I have ever had (especially IBS) - no test or doctor has ever given me a correct diagnosis or test or cure. I've done it all on my own (and with you all on the internet!)

Heather Van Vorous has the answer to IBS by the way.... just look her up.

Hi BB

I feel the same way too. I thought I was the only one in this world who has all these funny feelings. It feels like ants craawling inside your scalp.

My symtom starts with facial numbness in 2001. I was all stressed up with works and young children in the family. My symtom has gone on and off during these few years. At the beginning, I don't quite understand how it starts and ends.

Last year I started having this slight blurr vision in the morning and dry eyes and bloated eyes too.

Went to see eye doctors they mentioned nothing wrong till I insisted on my symtons then they did a dry eye checkup for me and found I was experiencing dry eyes. My dry eyes continue on. I also have this strengthless left arms and left side chest pain sometimes since beginning of this year.
Just few months ago I start feeling the tingling effect on top of my left scalp areas. I also feel some itchness inside my left ear. Really feels like so many ants inside my ears and crawling towards my lef scalp.

Went to do a full body scan. Went on some diet and fasting.

I am taking this "extent vision" from vitamin research, I now feel better for my eyes problem.
I am taking "ultrabone" from Source Natural. It is quite good.

I am also taking EFA, a kind of fish oil. I feel better less sensation on top of my scalp.

I think it is alot to do with stress and computer work. I spend lots of hours in front of computer as well. I do experience better health if I am off the computer the whole day.

I am taking some taichi classes right now. It really help me alot for relaxing.

I think health lifestyle is the best cure of all medicine.
I have to find a way to balance our lives.

It is not easy. I know. It is worthwhile to try to keep it up....

Nice to come to the Health Board to see so many people are having similar problems. At least I now do not feel so alone.

Take care. God Bless all of us.

Can someone please give some advice on how to treat this condition?? It seems as though its very difficult to treat because it could be a number of different reasons causing the tingling sensation on the scalp.
I've been suffering from this for the last 5 years on and off. Seems only to come on when im really stressed out or tired. Also staring into a computer screen for a long period of time doesnt help either.
I have bad posture as well. I get neck pain that sometimes feels as though its coming from my ears. The tingling crawling sensation is only over the left side of my scalp. My eyes water alot and i tend to sweat excessively when exercising around this area of my scalp.
Anyone with advice would be much appreciated :)

My sensations are on the skull just below the skin like other people have experienced and tends to come and go isnt there permanately. I just want to know is relaxation my best bet to get rid of it or should I go on to some prescribed medication?? I do have problems with stress and tension im begining to think its related.

Ok this afternoon I seen a Dr about the tingling crawling sensation over my scalp. I also told him about my excessive sweating in these same areas that I get this perculiar annoying sensation. The Dr informed me that it's actually a skin problem possibly brought on by stress. He asked me if I had eczema as a kid which I did and said it's related to that as well. This is the first Dr that has ever put it down to this. As far as I can see not many Dr's have any idea how to diagnose this condition. If anyone has this problem when you go to the Dr ask him/her to treat it as a skin condition avoid taking antidepresants or anxiety drugs.
Good luck!!

It is such a relief to find a website like this and finally connect all my problems together.

I too have been having the tingling, crawling, pulsating feeling in the right side of my head and the burning, fullness and tingling in the ears.

The illnesses i have got are as follows:

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (a weakness in the secondary nervous system) in my right leg, back, neck and left wrist, which causes stiffness, pain, aches etc. Have had this for nearly nine years.

Depression for nine years as well causing panic attacks, stress, anxiety and tension all over my body.

Eczema. Have had a recurring rash under my right eye for over 15 years now, this time it is lasting longer and only just found out that it was eczema and am currently taking cream for it.

Went to see the doctor last week for the problem in my head and she told me it was stress and put me on a higher dosage of anti-depressants, as yet it has not gone but does feel slightly better. I also if I'm occupying myself I don't even feel it and also don't get it when I first wake up or usually not when I'm standing up right, it's when I sit down and start thinking about it it comes back then I get anxious then it get's worse. Stress has also caused my neck and shoulders to get very tense which the doctor says can also bring on the problem in my head.

Also it is good to see a previous post mentioning eczema can be a cause of it as well and I also sit long hours in the front of a computer and have very bad posture.

Well I can finally link all my problems together to this head problem.

Also has anyone tried doing this: get your hand halfway between you jaw and your neck on the side of the pain and lift your skin up, I have tried that and it completly goes also a nice soothing massage around your spine, neck and shoulders helps the pain disappear.

Anyway hope I have helped as you have helped me.

Thank you and take care of yourselfs.

I have many of these same symptoms. Been happening for 5 months now. I researched the net and many of these symptoms can be from several different things. Though, I do believe I have found what mine is from. I suffer from the sensation of bugs crawling in my hair, face, and ears/ like an itchy feeling. It is worse in those areas. Though it is pretty much my entire body, but not as bad as those areas. Sometimes sharp nerve pain in my eyes. My arms and hands has it good, but not as severe as from the neck up as I described earlier. Tingling in my hands and feet. And sharp sensations at times like I am being stabbed in my legs. Burning sensations in my hands, legs, arms, and ears. Pins and Needles in feet hands basically all over. I went to my chiropractor for back and neck pain, I had these symptoms but I didn't mention it I didn't think it was related. Though after some discussion with him of what had happened to me and my symptoms described above, and an MRI it was clear as to what is causing this. In April of 2006 I totalled out my car. At the time I didn't realize I had whiplash. (they say it dosn't get you until later). I was in pain after the accident but it went away after a couple of days. Then about 4 months later I slipped and fell down the stairs and hit my forehead on the window ledge at the bottom. Jarring my head and neck backwards (apparently making the whiplash that I didn't know I had worse). That is the time I noticed the symptoms of crawling, tingling, pins and needles, and the other symptoms (but I didn't put all together at that time). Anyway, I had an MRI and I have 5 bulging disks in the C2, C3, C4, C5, C6, and C7 of my cervical spine (neck). The chiropractor says these disks are pressing on my nerves causing these very annoying and at times quite painful sensations. His recommendation, get the inflammation down by using and ice bag (10 inch blue ones), and wearing it on my neck and back for hours on end. My neck and back are in such bad shape it is difficult to get the inflammation down, as I do sit at a computer all day. I wear the ice on my back at work for 5 to 6 hours a day. And at night, I sleep on the ice on my neck. It is difficult to wear it during the day on my neck, unless I am at home in comfortable chair that I can lean back on to hold the ice in place. I use a girdle type thing to strap the ice on my back. I look like a hunchback (I wear two bags on my back, one on the lower, and on in the middle), but I don't care. I just wan't these horrible sensations to go away. Like someone else has mentioned, it has effected my social life, as I am always rubbing my skin or scratching at my head, rubbing my face. Not very attractive and embarrasing for me. I am relying on my chiropractor to help me. Surgery is out of the question. If I was an at home body and didn't have to work, I would be recovering faster. As I could use the ice a lot more and the imflammation would go away faster. My chiropractor cannot adjust my neck and back with inflammation. It is too stiff to even get it to adjust and I am learning what to do and what not to do to aggravate it and make it worse or make it take me a step back. But, we are working on it, I see him twice a week. Hope this information has been of help to the ones reading it. It may very well be your buldging disks, if you have some. A good term for this is called Neuropathophysiology.

Hello,
thank-you for posting your stories. After sticking them under my husbands nose to read, and telling him see I am not crazy, now I am in tears, I am so relieved to find some kind of lead to my pain. I am 38 and have parkinsons and rheumatoid arthritis, and alot of other medical problems, some unexplained.
I can know take some information to my neurologist, I haven't seen him in awhile and I have avoided other Drs. because they find me interesting until they can't figure me out.
A few years ago I took a fall and had a cervical sprain, I have fell on it a few times since and over the years after showing it to my neurologist who didn't seem interested, I just got used to keeping my neck warm in the winter and dealing with it. I am on so many pills the last thing I wanted was more, muscle relaxers make me loopy and in pain, and I have weird reactions to medication- anyway for the past 6 months things ahve been stressful, I can feel my neck and shoulders swelling up, but then I started waking up from a sound sleep screaming in pain. it feels like a rubberband is wound tight around my head and a burning sensation, along with my hair actually hurting, my husband got annoyed and I just could not make hime understand how bad the pain was, I would stick my head in water-take 3 tylenol, 2 cups of coffee and fall back asleep, sometimes I would wake up 2-3 times in 6 hours, one night he had to get up early for work and I was trying to be quiet, barely able to see straight- and I woke him, I was in agony, he was angry, so while I stood with my head under the water waiting for my coffee, I just couldn't take it anymore, I actually shaved my hair off- I DO NOT recommend it but I could not believe how great I felt, my family was so mad at me, they thought I was a lunatic- maybe I am- but my pain is REAL!!!!!!!! Thank-you so much

Hello All,

I have found some relief knowing that so many others suffer from similar sensations. I am; however, sorry that you all are going through this. I've suffered from anxiety/panic disorder/depression for about 5-6 years now. About a month and a half ago I had a panic attack and hyperventilated myself into the ER. Since then I've had severe anxiety brought on by panic disorder (disorder in which your body anticipates panic creating anxiety about panicking).

About three weeks ago I got a headache that last two days, it wasn't particularly severe, it felt like a tension headache (I get these a lot around PMS, or before or after my period). I didn't have any ibuprofen, so I took Tylenol instead. Didn't help a bit. It finally went away when I got some ibuprofen. The only weird part about the headache were these small (not very severe) shooting pains on the left side of my head. Since then they haven't gone away. They have lessened in severity and occurrence, but are now accompanied by this bizarre tingling and itchiness of my scalp. The pains are primarily on the left side, but have also occurred on the right. The tingling; however, is ONLY on the left side. During my two-day long headache I was rather anxious, because I've never had a headache last that long, and having health-related anxiety, I automatically began panicking that it was a tumor/aneurysm/whatever.

I'm not medicated, don't care to be, and am going through cognitive-behavioral therapy with a psychologist. He has assured me that anxiety/stress can cause some of the scariest and most bizarre physical symptoms. I am a graphic designer, and spend hours everyday in front of a computer, I also have terrible neck, jaw and upper back pain...I've had this since I can remember. I have wisdom teeth moving in, which will need to be removed soon.

I am 22 years old, and otherwise quite healthy, according to my doctors. I have a good pulse, and my blood pressure is generally between 96/52 and 108/67...pretty low, but they say it's healthy. I really do believe that anxiety and constant tension of the body can cause horrible physical symptoms, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the cause of a lot of your complaints.

I figure, if I'm able to enjoy a small amount of things still, and I'm not dead yet, that there's no sense in letting myself fall into a deep depression about it. Yes, it sucks, but it's your life and you can't let these things control it. Try distracting yourself, try coming to terms with the sensations, and maybe it'll improve. I truly feel for you guys. I've had panic/anxiety so badly before that I was afraid to take showers because I thought I would drown/suffocate. I couldn't leave my apartment to even go get the mail because I was so afraid (of what, I have no idea). IBS is a common symptom among anxiety sufferers, so if that has any connection to the sensations of the scalp (as stated in one of your posts), it would not surprise me, again, if anxiety is the root cause. Luckily, there is medication-free treatment. I would look into Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. It's helped me immensely.
