i'm starting a sexual relationship with a new guy, and we're going to use condoms, but i hear they're not 100% effective. i asked my doctor if she could put me on daily valtrex, and she said that wasn't a good idea, and that condoms would be fine. i really trust my doctor, she's excellent, but what gives? whta are the chances of passing on the virus if i have sex with a condom (not on an outbreak, obviously). in fact i've never had an outbreak, but i tested + on a blood test. i'm realy upset now. any feedback?

Nobody can tell you the odds. It's very possible to get it while using a condom. Read the Happy Couples thread recently bumped up for lots of advice and routines to avoid transmission as much as possible. I've been with my soulmate over 13 years now and he hasn't gotten it. It is possible, but I wouldn't rely on condoms (and we don't), or on drs' advice.

Well, I can tell you this. I had sex just one time with an infected girl...we used a condom and she had no visible outbreak...and I got infected. So you just really can't tell what the chances are, it's a toss-up.

And i'm another who ended up with type 2 even though a condom was used.

There are people who are either lucky or have a good immune system or have a sexual routine which helps them stay herpes free. Then there are those who think they are herpes free due to not getting ob's or any other obvious signs, yet they are infected.

All you can do is research things thoroughly and get your partner educated. The rest is up to him on how he feels about herpes and your relationship. Most people who want committment don't mind if they do end up with herpes. Those who are uncertain of their future within the relationship might shy away from a sexual relationship.

Yes...and it wasn't good. Obviously she didn't bother to warn me she had it. It took A LOT of self-control not to punch her face in.

Unlucky,

The guy who forced himself on me didnt bother to tell me either. As a matter of fact, in a conversation much later he admitted that he "used" to get cold sores but didnt have one then. If he were in striking range, no doubt I would punch his face in.
