Why can't I fall asleep? I have tried everything but sleeping medication. Im scared I will get addicted to them. I have to get up at 4 am to get ready to go to work. When I go to bed it is around 9:30 pm and all I do is lay awake even thought I am sleepy when I go to bed. It seems like when my head hits the pillow I am wide awake. I finally go to sleep around in the early morning hours. The reason I know is that I look at the clock and it is always after midnight. Some nights I lay awake all night. The last fews nights I have woke up hot! even though I have a ceiling fan running. It is scary. I am taking Atenolol for my BP I thought that might be a side effect for the hot spells. I am hot natured too. Any way should I take sleeping pills? I have heard that it can be addicted. Any suggestions will be helpful. Please say a prayer for me tonight... Thanks

After taking sleeping pills for 21 years I'm beginning to feel it's hopeless and I have to accept myself this way  I have no problem falling asleep since I have a whole collection of pills: tylenol pm, melatonin, sleep gels, benedryl. But at 4am? Or 5am? That's when the racing thoughts start, spinning ...spinning... out of control. Feeling depressed about it I reach for a sleeping pill. It always works. But I hate this. My doctor said it's "quite common." He isn't alarmed.

I used to take medication but it did not work after a while. Maybe it works for someone else, but not for me. I wouldn’t recommend you to take sleeping bills cuz you will be addicted to it and your body can also get used to it. You might want to try these things out:
- Turn on soft music
- Read the newspaper until you fall asleep.
You said you have to wake up at 4:00 A.M. to go to work. I think you might want to consider working a later shift. Maybe you should set your time to wake up around 6 A.M.or after consistently. It’s just the psychological thing. When you worry that you gonna have to wake up early, you cannot sleep because you are always worry. Your sleep is important. You should find a different job which allows you wake up around 6 A.M. or after.
Just help yourself first.
Take care,

Medication works for some and not for others. . . I take Trazadone which is not a sleeping pill but an older antidepressant for anxiety that has a side effect of sleep. What you can do is go to your doctor and let her know that you want something that is NOT addictive or habit forming in any way. I can only take things that are not addictive and this has worked for me. .. Hope that helps

I have had trouble falling asleep for two months now. In fact as i write this I have been awake for three days straight. Here's the weird thing, I a not tired at all. I am functioning and am not anxious. I have no idea what the hell is going on. Several of my clients have been reporting similar symptoms. I live in the Hollywood Hills and we have been having record rainfall this winter. That's the only thing I can say is unique to this area, we are usually pretty dry.

I lay in bed and am wide awake. Thoughts running through my head, songs, etc. I miss my dreams and I miss sleep. I am baffled as this hs never happened to me.

But I am getting a hell of a lot done.
