View Full Version : Genes/Cancer

If some cancer's run in your family, does it mean that you will get cancer also? Both Colon and Prostate Cancer run in my family. What are the chances of the genes being passed down to me?
And can eating healthy and living a healthy lifestyle prevent people from getting cancer?
I see adds that say stuff like: "eat healthy, and you won't get cancer.", but is that only for people who don't have cancer's running in their family, or do those adds consider the people who have cancer genes also?
One more thing -- if Colon or Prostate Cancer can be detected at an early stage, what are the survival chances for the patient?

Coveted-it's all confusing isn't it. Because you have these cancers in your family you run a higher risk of getting them, but it does not mean you will get them for sure. The problem is, as we age, our immune systems tend to decline and mistakes such as cancer are not caught like they were when we were younger. Eating healthy & living a healthier lifestyle can delay this decline in immune function & help us live longer. These cancers are very curable if caught at an early stage. Here again, an once of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Periodic colonoscopies for colon cancer detection & PSA levels (with DRE's) for prostate cancer detection might be advisable in your case. A PSA level saved my life (and I have no known family history of prostate cancer). You alone can be your best advocate.
