I was just wondering what, if any, the negative consequences of using melatonin regularly are. I've heard that your body will stop producing it's own melatonin, but I don't know if this is a valid statement. Also, sometimes I take as much as 9 mg, when the recommended maximum dose is 3 mg. I take it almost every night. Also, what are some good, reliable books that provide accurate information about herbs? Thanks.

I am an Insomniac I wish this worked for me. My hubby can take half a 3mg and sleep for 12 hours. I took up to eight in 4 hours and still was wide awake. I have tried them now and then thinking that I just consumed way to much caffine on that day that I had taken 8. They make me doze off but they give me the weirdest dreams that wake me up. I should really dedicate my body to science cause my body chemistry is way messed up.

I have no concerns taking melatonin. I haven’t heard nor could a quick search find anything on stopping to produce your own melatonin. I do think I feel more tired when I wake up after taking melatonin, but it passes. So on a daily bases I take other supplements and then melatonin as needed. I don’t think there are any known long term side effects.

I have taken the Melatonin and I and mother both woke up with vivid horrible dreams and were crying in the middle of the night. We were at a hotel and took the melatonin to help us sleep. we never took the Melatonin again!

I cut the 3mg dose into four pieces. One piece (0.75 mg) is enough for me.
The full dose of 3mg gave me dreams and woke me up after 3 to 4 hours
You should try Valerian since the melatonin causes you weird dreams. It did for my husband - so a combo of valerian and Cal/mag/zinc does the tricK for him.
