I'm 51 and this is the first year I'm starting to have some symptoms. Yesterday was day 20 of my cycle (yes, I still keep track...lol) and I was bleeding just a bit, then it stopped. Weird! Is this a common symptom? I'm assuming it is.

Yes, this is a symptom. Bleeding can become very irregular with spotting between periods. I never knew what was going on. I couldn't figure out if this was spotting between periods or a period because after while they all looked the same. I just did the best I could.

I haven't had a period for two years now but I went through a period of about 4 years of this irregular/spotting stuff.

Thanks. I have my yearly PAP coming up and was worried maybe it means something. Does perimentopuase ever cause irregular PAPS? All mine have so far been normal. Thanks.

No, peri does not cause abnormal paps. It is purely a hormonal thing.

Hello,

Yes I too have had that. I just turned 50 and started a couple years ago with irregular periods...they used to be every 28 days and then they started coming as early as 24 and then over the past few years they have been usually 21 or 24th day but also have had ones that come on day 32 or day 40 and once on day 50!! I have also got it where I seem to be done with my period (it only lasts 3 days tops) and then a few days later, a bit of staining. I am current with my gyn exam and they gyn says it is typica for peri.

This last time though my Pap did come up "irregular" in that it was not positive for cancer but I did have endometrial cells they said. I was very concerned and I am sure those of you who helped me out in Nov. remember this. What had happened was that during the Pap I had some bleeding as she had to dilate my cervix to take the pap (common she said for peri in that the opening of the cervix becomes smaller), anyway, the blood being present caused the pap to come back with "irregularities". I had a pelvic and vaginal ultrasound done and everything was fine. She felt it was fine but wanted me to do that to be sure. (caused me a lot of anxiety but it was worth it to get it checked out and know all was well).

So I do feel that if I had some irregular bleeding going on during the Pap it would have created an irregular pap I am sure. The bleeding I get between periods (not usually but I have had it in the past few years) is more brownish than red. She said this is old blood and again normal for this time .

hope this helps.

It seems to be very normal to have some spotting between periods at this stage. I'm 51, and my periods have been very regular for 20 years plus. About 18 mths ago they suddenly changed, came later and had heavy flooding. The regularity settled but very heavy periods. Then last Feb I started with the spotting, a few days before, or a few days after. Sometimes would only know after passing urine, and there'd be a smear of brownish/red. Then there was mucous, but always a dark brown rather than red.

Last 3 mths, periods have been best for close on 2 years. Was due 2 weeks ago and no sign of a period, normally can't touch my breasts for at least a week before I get it, but you could do a tap dance on them right now! Don't even feel like I'm getttng it, so am hoping this might be my first missed one. I'm away on holiday Feb 25th, it's probably waiting till then to appear!

So be calm, take whatever helps you - like evening primrose oil, drink soy milk and such and look forward to when it is over.

I am very grateful for all the info shared on this board! I'll be 50 in September and this month I'm dealing with post-period spotting (I've also just came back from a flight, having mood swings and other things). My mother used to panic and cry every time she would spot, because in her day there wasn't the sharing of information about perimenopause so readily available today (she had to wait out the doctors --if they told her at all!). I'd probably be in the same boat if it were not for this board. Thanks to all!
