I thought Yasmin was supposed to help you lose weight, but I actually gained. I was on Yasmin last year and I did gain about 10 pounds on it over a few months. My breasts also got much bigger. I switched from Yasmin to Sprintec (generic of Ortho Cyclen), but now I am switching back to Yasmin (better for my skin). When I was on Ortho Cyclen I didn't gain or lose. Has anyone else actually gained weight from Yasmin? Thanks!

Yasmin does not promote weight loss. It's a "weight neutral" pill, meaning it's less likely to gain weight while using it. This doesn't mean that you won't gain weight, though.
Any weight gain from birth control should be able to be controlled through a proper diet and moderate exercise. Studies show that actual weight gain from the birth control amounts to only 3-5 pounds. Anything beyond that is attributed to a poor diet and lack of exercise.
I'm going to have to disagree with GLSheridan on this one - when I took Yasmin I gained 5 pounds in four days, and I was eating heathfully, following my usual diet. As a thin person, this scared me. Orthtricyclen also strongly increased my appetite, I was hungry all the time and gained 15 pounds. When I went off of it, all the weight came right off.
The hormones in the pill can effect your metabolism and the way your body processes and digests carbohydrates, and therefore, can cause changes in weight. The trick is finding a pill with the combination of hormones that works the best with your body. I'm on Mircette now and love it - no weight gain, no side effects at all, actually. Good luck!!

I definitely agree! Yasmin does make you gain weight!! I was on it for one year and gained 12-15 pounds! I stopped taking it and I am back down to my original weight and eat anything I want. I defintely would attribute the weight gain to Yasmin because I run 3 times a week and lift weights and it still wasn't enough!

I have tried a number of BCP over past 20 years and also now on Mirena IUD. I have found that all hormones affect my metabolism but also binge eating at various stages through my cycles. The binge eating for me is not a massive problem as I am not too large a person anyway, but for anybody who starts out on hormones and is already on the heavy side I would imagine it to be a real uphill struggle.
I also spent 9 years during my late 20s and 30s when I was birth control free. During this time I my weight was normal and if I wanted to lose a few pounds for a special occassion, it was very easy to lose just through increased diligence on diet and increased exercise. I did not experience the binge eating during hormone-free life.
A word on binge eating....... my worst enemies are bread and cereals. I am a perfectly normal, well-balanced individual who understands the dangers of being overweight and nows how to avoid it. But, I can stand in my kitchen and eat slice after slice after slice of bread whilst telling myself not to do this.
Does anybody else have this happen to them whilst on birth control pills or IUDs?
regards to all

I started on Allesse and gained about 15 pounds and switched to Yasmin and lost the weight. Then I was switched to Cryselle and gained weight and felt bloated all the time and now I'm back on Yasmin and have lost the bloated tummy and a few pounds.
I guess for some people it depends on their metabolism and activity level?

Pandi428..why did you not like Sprintec? My doctor is switching me to Sprintec after being on Yasmine for 2 years. the past few months have been very frustrating, weight gain, upset stomach, break through bleeding, depression and i think it is all due to yasmine. my doctor said your body can sometimes change the way you metabolize a certain medication so now I am going to try sprintec...has anyone been on this BC??

I've to 2nd katee uk and pesh, birth control in some DOES affect the way carbs are processed in the body, I used to work out 5days a week, run anywhere from 25-30miles a week and weight train and STILL wouldn't lose or sometimes would GAIN!!! All this while eating about 50gms of carbs a day, practically nothing. I even had a nutritionist look at my food logs and he too seemed mystified. I believe diet helps in not letting it become all unraveled. And as for binging, yes definately would make me do that at certain times in my cycle and I would know that I shouldn't be doing it while I was eating bagel after bagel on some weekends. I don't think the docs tell ya the entire story. That 3-5 or 10lb gain is a joke, the pill also increased my appetite like 10times!!!! So here you are, mentally outta control and hungry; a combination for diet disaster.
