View Full Version : Concerned about something my child ate

Hello. Sunday night my son sat up in bed while I was on my computer and said his stomach was hurting. From there, the night went downhill. He started throwing up around 10, and did it all night long, with diareah.
Then, Monday he gagged all day and ran a fever of 101.
He was sick all the rest of the day although I did feed him some noodle soup around 5. He had diarreah all night and Tuesday I got him up for school, and gave him some cereal, dry toast, and gatorade. On the way out he had a bowel movement in his pants. So he was out 2 days. The last bowel movement was around 12 noon. He was able to go to basketball practice tuesday night and back to school Wednesday.

The problem is I thought he just had a stomach virus. But, I couldn't get him to eat dinner Wednesday night or a snack after school on Wednesday. Although he was playing fine, he still wasn't hungry. Then, out of the blue he says "mom, I ate some dirty turnip greens out of ben's garden at the birthday party" (he went to my neighbors party saturday at 2:30)
I said "what do you mean, dirty?" and he said "they hadn't been washed" and I said "did his parents say you could eat it?" and he said "yes, others ate some too"

So, I explained to him he can't eat dirty vegetables anymore, and when I told his dad,my son then said it was carrots that hadn't been washed, instead of turnips.

I don't want to run over and ask my neighbors about it, for the sake that it could be nothing but a stomach virus, and we are also new to this neighborhood, so I don't know these people very well.

Does anyone think this could be from the dirty veggies, or probably just a virus? He has had viruses before, but I can't remember him having a fever with just a regular virus.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I would say it was probobly a virus that he picked up at the birthday party. When I was a kid I used to eat "dirty vegtables" all the time straight out of the garden, hehehe I remember one time I ate almost a whole row of carrots, boy were my parents mad.
If he is still feeling sick I would take him to the doctors just to be safe.
Take care

Well, because I am over protective I would call the neighbor and definitly ask if it was a vegetable that he ate and not a poisonous plant. Just to be on the safe side, I have to agree that dirty vegetables won't do any harm...I had plenty of dirt when I was younger.
And my son as we speak has this virus. I was up last night at 3am helping him while he was vomiting and for the last two days his stool has been almost water. I am giving him lots of water and gatorade. He's old enough (4) that he will eat when he's hungry, but sometimes people who don't like to throw up will NOT eat in fear that they will throw up again afterwards. Kids have a way of knowing when not to eat. Just push the fluids, lots of gatorade...also you can calm his tummy by giving him the syrup out of a fruit cocktail can or a coke cola and taking out the fizzy, the syrup in that can help calm the tummy too. Good luck

I too tend to overreact, but I would go ahead and talk to the neighbors. I would just make sur ethat they had not put any pesticides on the garden. It is more than likely just a virus, bet it is better to be safe than sorry. It has been long enough that if he hade injestided any type of poison from the garden, it would have done more damage by now. I would think anyway.

I hope he gets to feeling better soon.
Keep us posted.

Thank you everybody. He seems to be doing much better. I made mexican pizzas tonight and beef buritos and he had 2, so I would say he's much better!

As a child i tended to get viruses very easily so I guess since I havn't took his, because I always do by now, and he mentioned the eating dirty carrots thing, I just flipped. I am very careful as to wash everything from a garden or produce section, so I was just a little surprised when he said it. I asked him again tonight and he said it was def carrots, that the dad was handing out. He said they just had a little dirt on them. lol. I was like, well, a little is all it takes! I guess I get scared too because I have a niece who ate something like mudd or berries. The doctor said it could have been either, and got very sick as a child and had to have blood transfusion.
He does seem okay now though, although, I did not know about the syrp from the cola, etc. I will keep that in mind in case we ever have another virus, in which i'm sure we will lol.

I just found it odd that me nor my husband got it, and those things are so contagious.
I thought maybe it was food poisioning or ecoli or something since they have a dog in the yard.

Thanks everybody. Hope your child gets to feeling better. Those viruses are terrible!
