I recently was diagnosed with PCOS and was put on metformin and supposely the doc wanted to put me on the pill to help lose weight and have my periods lighter. I smoke about 7 cigs a day and he wouldnt prescribe the pill because at 35 i have a greater risk of stroke! Yikes! Is this true and why? Ive heard it in the past but it doesnt say why the pill does this for older women. I plan on stopping smoking so I can get my hormones in check! :)

Yep thats true. The risk of blood clots goes up with both age and smoking, and the blood clots can start in the brain and cause a stroke.
If you're worried about elevated testosterone in the meantime you could ask for spironolactone. It isn't a contraceptive, but binds to testosterone so your body can't use it.
