I posted back in November with my lipid results and got alot of good responses. I took alot of the suggestions and tried them. Here is my problem, I am still not able to get my HDL up. My numbers in November were: TC=178 Trig's=265 Hdl=38 LDL=86 My numbers as of Jan 13 are: TC=176 Trig's=167 HDL=37 LDL=106. I quit smoking in March of 04 and started to exercise as much as I can. I am limited to what I can do due to a back issue. Any advice to raise my HDL would be greatly appreciated.

sts,
If you're not doing it now, have 2 glasses (10 ounce total) of wine every night. After 30 days get your HDL checked and see if that helped.
I think that might be the single best thing you can do.

I read that purple grape juice is just as good. Also cranberry juice. I take artichoke extract to lower cholesterol.

:D I have heard that red wine will increase HDL. I have not had any alcohol in about 16 years. Can anyone recommend a good wine (taste wise) that will do better than the others, or do they all work pretty much the same. Thank you for the replies>

Any advice to raise my HDL would be greatly appreciated. Omega 3 EFA's, especially salmon oil capsules, raise HDL. Available in 1,000mg capsules at most drug & health food stores. Take 2 ~ 1,000mg capsules daily, preferably with meals.

A nice big red like Chateau Haut Brion comes to mind...1961 is a nice year:D:D:D;)!
For those with less than a BILLION in the bank, the South American and Australian Cabernets are still a fair buy...or at least they WERE til the politicians let the dollar tank into the dirt the last couple years.
I'm sure a $10 jug (gallon) of PAISANO from CA will fill the bill HDL-wise and we can all afford THAT!:D

Moxie do you like a dry wine or a fruity sweeter wine? I'm from Indiana and I like something that's fruity and sort of sweet. I drink Olivers soft red. It's made in Bloomington, Indiana and it's very popular in this area. They sell it at WalMart and it's cheap. You might also visit a local winery. They will let you taste so that you can find something you like. Also a suggestion. Some people take grape seed extract instead of drinking the red wine although I've heard that the skins is where the benefit of red wine comes in.

No sweet wine for me. I like the reds and chardonnays. I am a big australian wine fan. In fact my husband and I make wine. The grapes are from california but when they are not in season we get the kits and some of them are from australia. As for the antioxident factor I also heard that pomegranate juice is great..Lisa ;)

A very good and affordable red wine is California Cellars Burgundy. Very good taste, and not sweet. A gallon jug only costs about $10.00.

From the looks of your numbers you are probably eating a low fat diet. Decrease your amounts of carbohydrates and increase your intake of good saturated animal fats and your profile will improve.

Lenin,
Sorry, but I can't recommend a white wine. My preference is mainly red wines which aren't sweet. Have you ever tried the Taylor California Cellars Burgundy wine? I'm by no means a connoisseur of wines, but I've actually prefered this brand over some of the more expensive Merlots that I've tasted. I guess it's all a matter of personal preferences. I have never been very fond of white wines, though.

ARIZONA,
It's been a long long time since I've tried TAYLOR and then it was some harsh NY red that seemed good for paint removal. I assume they've moved operations to CA and I'll give a bottle a shot when next I spot it. I usually prefer a cabernet to a burgundy, though (especially if it's a "California" Burgundy...presumably referring to the Burgundian section of CA, do they have a DUKE, I wonder:D:D:D)
I'm a Francophile when it comes to wine and I despise the fact that they are getting farther and farther out of reach pricewise and the crashing dollar isn't helping one bit.:(
In general, I prefer cheap Spanish, South American, or Australian red wines to American. California wines for all their hype and price are still pretty second-rate in my book. Too much tannin from weather that is TOO HOT. Just me, though, and it's all moot since I can't even afford to drink the decent estate bottled Northern California wines on a day to day basis. A daily beverage at over a dollar an ounce just doesn't compute.
Oh well, I since must CERTAINLY have won last night's BIG GAME ($130 Million), it will be Chateau Latour with every roast!:D (Dom Perignon with fish!)
Salut!

I have heard red yeast rice capsuls. 1 twice a day, will help. Don't take with lipator, or mevicor.
