Beautiful film and book. It is definitely in my top 10 and have watched it probably close to 20 times. First and foremost, the acting is brilliant, the cinematography mindblowing and the soundtrack unbelievably haunting.

And oh, how I identify with the characters. Some argue this film is not "true to life" and maybe there is some truth to that, however, I sure have felt an inch away from what those four go through for a fix.

How sad, how tragic.

Hi gg,

I too can relate to the mother and son in Requiem. Excellent movie. I think I'll rent it again.

I have a 21 year old son that just got out of a treatment center that "specializes" in both addiction and pyschiatric disorders. He came out way over medicated and now is convinced he needs them. He is having side effects from the meds such as a tremors and strange movements. I have talked to him about the meds... probably a little too much. His boss told him yesterday that he is going to cut his pay because he is too slow right now. I know it is the medication, he didn't have this probem before. He's an addict. He was not in a manic state when he went in the center does not have or never been diagnosed with schizophrenia, bi-polar or any illness of that nature. He wasn't even physically addicted to anything when he went in. He does have Tourette's Syndrome but a very mild case. Most people would not even recognize it. It manifest itself in the form of ticks and/or stuttering, symptoms wax and waning . I think the meds have made the tics much worse. Talking to the staff at the center about this was a like a bad dream. I talk and they acknowledge my words but stay on their path of treatment. He was in the center on a scholarship or charity case. It did not cost him a penny. He works a few hours each week and the center knew this. When he checked out he was given his prescriptions which cost $1700.00!!! Yep! For a 1 month supply! I could not frigging believe it! He had a little savings and his dad paid for half. I don't have any money but honestly would have had major difficulties contributing to that much meds. An anti-depressant yes. Anyway, I can't do a thing about any of it. I'm trying to stay focused on my own recovery program. In fact I'm going to go get dressed and go to a meeting this morning.

Originally, I was going to post to you regarding you feeling depressed today. Your post about your feeling depressed struck a feeling in me. Thank you for sharing it and allowing me to vent a little. I can't change anything, it is up to him but thanks again for listening.

What is going on with you today? Is there anything I can do to help? Listen maybe? You are certainly doing that for me now.

Take care,
Patty

Great flick and book. The writer did another great book called "Last Exit to Brooklyn". It's a gritty read and I heard they did a film. If you liked Requiem then go read "Permanent Midnight" by Jerry Stahl. The movie is good too but the book is awesome. It is also a mustread/mustsee for all the recovering addicts out there.

Hi Windy-
I did see the movie permenent midnite-and have read articles-on Jerry stahl..very interesting..good movie..also i loved last exit-i believe larry Clark direscted..he had published several photography books-detailing junky life(and very subversive-photos)..he also directed the movie-Kids and bully-both excellent films-he also just put out a book called Heroin-(but i think its quite expensive)-100.00 or more-most of his work is out of print so therfore big bucks..

TOOMANY_
how are you??there is a site(please don't ban me-cos its not another forum-just a place where people who need help getting meds/free or discounted-
www.needymeds.com-please check this out-also-what meds is your son on?
He should nOT be soo slowed down that he can't function-this seems wrong.
I share your concerns about your son-and also-could he get help thru tansitional assistance or state health care..
My son-has psych issues-thankfully-his job provides health benifits-as his meds are about 600.00 a month.
But if you could list the meds hes on-i might be able to offer some help(amateur pharmacist..lol)..between my sister/ and myself..ive become educated on some of these meds..
Im glad you got to vent..ya gotta sometimes..me too..haha-im a kvetch!Plus-these are real concerns-its your son!!!Goddess bless him!
You do still need to focus in on your health to-not so easy when your kids are having issues-i know that one all too well-but im glad you are putting time aside to go to a meeting-nothings gonna get accomplished if you are feeling bad!
So let me know whats up w/ the meds-
Today-ill go to the park-walk my doggy-do some cleaning-food shopping-prepare for the week-sundays are like-that for me..
My boy has a bad cold-so maybe ill make a nice soup..just trying to stay healthy-no flu shot this year..is it too late?
Take care-
Good to hear from you..thanx for checking in-makes me feel good.

Too Many - Hi, I'm Twinlynn (Lynn). It really sounds like your son, with all these new meds, may need a new psychiatric "work-up" by a pharmo-psychiatrist, who is completely independent of the "rehab" place. It is in the rehab's best interests to protest that "they know what is best" for your son...and that whatever meds they put him on are the RIGHT meds! I doubt this rehab will admit to errors in medication. Maybe Goddessgrl's suggestions can help with expenses. It's worrying that the rehab is not willing to reassess his meds based on the negative reactions he's been having. That's why I think a new and independent medical assessment might help. No wonder you're depressed....it's terrible when you are so worried about a loved one and you want so much to help.

Hope things work out. xxx Lynn

Windysan - Hey! D'ya think it might help my depression today if I reread "Last Exit to Brooklyn" and "Permanent Midnight"??? LOL!! That's some double-header! Powerful stuff, but, if like me, you get very "into" a book....and totally absorbed by the atmosphere...you're gonna have to read "Pollyanna" or something like it, afterwards, to dull the effects! LOLOL! :-) Lynn Ps You feeling better? Your ribs?

Gdgrl---Your day today sounds like mine except for the cleaning and cooking! LOL! But I'm gonna sort thru my books, so that's SORTA like cleaning...they're spilling over, everywhere and need to go back into categories again. Alice uses my "stacks" like a library...and after she leaves, they're all out of order! :-) xx Lynn PS You and puggie have a good day. Theo's bad leg has conked out (too much use--he can't support his little piglet body) and Celeste, with her bad "ticker", is sleeping her usual 20 hours a day, under the bed. So...there's no one for me to walk besides myself. And my bad foot is hurting, anyway! :-)

Thanks Twin. Doing better today. I ate about 8 pounds of boiled crawfish yesterday with 2 pods of garlic and I'm better. The rib appears to be a muscle pull and it is better too. Yeah, Last Exit and Perm. Midnight double-header! Pollyanna would be good for dessert.

Requiem for a Dream is an all-time favorite. What I couldn't believe is that what's-her-name won for "Erin Brochovich" over Ellyn Burstyn for best actress(Ellen was nominated...that other girl is sooooooo boring)

Anyways....

for TOOMANY: When I went into rapid detox, the Dr tried to get me all bogged down on high strength anti-psychotics like Seroquel and the like. The entire time I was in there,I received actual medical attention for a total of 15 minutes(in 10 days)

Most of the time I was dealt with in response to memos written by the $8 dollar and hour staff...stuff like "Patient is aggressive and combative"

I got mad because the WOULD NOT give me my meds on time, but insisted I go to their stupid AA meetings IN DETOX!!!!!!

I've been on Sub for about 3 months, and am down to 4 mgs a day...I've also almost completely quit xanax....no Seroquel!

peace

Windysan - Many moons ago, when I was working in London, I pulled a muscle--and thought I'd had a heart attack, the pain was so excrutiating. I'd gone to sit down in my office chair--missed the seat--and instinctively--and awkwardly--swiveled my body around in what was a vain effort to grasp the desk as I was falling. That little "swivel" cost me five days in bed from a pulled muscle--I couldn't MOVE! So....I completely empathize with you. Unfortunately, at that time, the discovery of the "8 lbs of Crawfish with Garlic and Butter Therapy" was still a distant glean in the eyes of the medical world....so I had to settle for bedrest. Most unfortunate! :-) Glad you're feeling better. Lynn

Holy Jeez !!! "Eraserhead"!!! I watched "Eraserhead" and Lynch's "Elephant Man" back to back while on acid. I'll never be the same again. Scarred me for life. Those "man-made" dancing chickens sure did a number on my psyche. I can't watch it again without flashbacks. Henry died a couple of years ago. The scene where Henry is walking through town....just goes on and on and on.

What about the scene with that woman with the fat cheeks and heavy makeup dancing on the stage...and those 'things' dropping around her. Can't IMAGINE a back to back of Eraserhead and Elephant Man. Ain't no Rehab ANYWHERE to counteract THAT! I still have nightmares, too. Never had a film stick to my psyche like Eraserhead!

I forgot to mention that while watching Eraserhead and Elephant Man on acid I was sharing a huge can of cold pork and beans with my friend. I've not eaten pork and beans since that day.

Thanks for the support and concern for me and my son...and his meds. He is being funded by the state for now so his meds will be paid for the next month or 2. Someone mentioned him seeing another pyschitrist and I couldn't agree more. But all of this is out of my hands so I'm just trying to "turn it over" or let go of it. I can make myself nuts over it. My hope and prayer is that he will get tired of this zombie state and get off most of the meds. Yes, Seroquel is a big one BB. He takes min 700 mgs but can take an additional 300 per day if he wants it. Oh well...let go.

Just wanted to say thanks to all that took time to post. The support always makes me feel better.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned "Drugstore Cowboy" starring Matt Dillon. It really depicts the cycle of destruction from the thrill of obtaining and using to...welll I won't spoil it.

Requiem For A Dream is an incredible film. I'll never forget how haunted I was when I left the theater upon seeing it.

Drugstore Cowboy.....very good movie. I love it when Burroughs separated the good stuff from the "kid stuff". I'll have to rent "Panic in Needle Park"...is that the name of the movie?

Yes, it's Panic in Needle Park. Which incidentally was shot 30 years ago, about 10 blocks (Verdi Square) from where I live. Of course, time goes by, and now very few people could afford an apt there! I was lucky to move to that nabe before it became chichi. :D
