If so, how does it work?

You can technically skip your period with the pill if you just skip through the sugar pills and go right into a new pack. However, that isn't something that is good to do all the time. Depo can elimate a period or do the opposite......make it last forever!!! Depo is a nasty drug though. I wouldn't consider that for birth control. Many people love it while on it, but then find they can't conceive easily afterwards. I am one of them. It took me 2 years to conceive, and that is because my period never returned. I had to be put on Clomid to conceive, which I did.......but after my son was born I went back to the same routine of not having my period. I haven't been on it for over 8 years now and my periods still don't come regularly. I get maybe 4 to 5 a year.

hmm, I have heard several horror stores about depo. Thanx for your input. I cannot skip periods with the pill I'm currently taking (but I probably won't be taking it much longer anyway). Pregnancy isn't a concern of mine since my dh had a vasectomy 3 years ago. I need bc for hormonal reasons since my periods are extremely irregular & heavy. I & my dr are extremely frustrated because I have tried every pill in the book (literally) in the last few years & I FINALLY found one that works (cyclessa) but the side effects are killing me! If I find a pill where I don't have side effects, it doens't help me with the heaviness & irregularity. This is the first pill that made me regular but the I just cannot live with the side effects. To me they are worse than the original problem. So, I am trying to think of other hormonal options that I havn't tried yet like the nuva ring, depo or patch. I'm not likeing the idea of the nuva ring & too afraid to try depo & patch so my options are dwindling! Thanx for your reply though!

As I mentioned before, I now suffer from irregular periods. I have been diagnosed with PCOS. One thing is that my periods are horribly painful, heavy and long as well, when I do get them. Prior to Depo, I was getting a period every single month, and they were the same.......painful, long and heavy.

Anyway........my doctor put me on a pill in hopes of it slowing my period down. The reason was because my PCOS was so out of control and because my periods were so horrible, he said that I would actually benefit from a period that was hardly existant. The goal wasn't to eliminate my period, but to decrease the flow and duration. He put me on a pill called Loestrin. Have you tried that. Loestrin brought me down to a 3 day cycle with minimal flow at most, which was great compared to the 8 days of hell I was experiencing. I wasn't aware that you were concerned with stopping your period because of medical reasons. Sometimes that is the best thing to do in order to control the medical condition. Otherwise, it isn't recommended.

So, for me........Loestrin did the job. It wasn't instant either. It took a few cycles before I could begin noticing a change in my periods.

I speak from the other side of the book. I love my depo and am actually upset I have to stop using it due to the high risk of Osteoporosis. I have a scan scheduled for Friday and I have to start using a pill. Depo is either great or horrible, I think it is great, but I have non of the problems either, except no period which I LOVE. I have been on Depo for eleven years-All I can really say-talk to your dr to find out what is best for you. If you don't need to conceive, then give it a try. All BC methods carry a risk. HEck, the IUD is the one that can cause Inftertility, not depo. Good luck to you whatever you choose.

My RE told me that Depo does cause infertility in women, myself included!

Yeah, I used to use that. I believe the generic version is lo ovrall? Anyway, it is what I used to use several years ago & did fine with it for about a year or so but then slowly but surely all the typical symptoms started happening. That is when my dh decided to get a vasectomy so I wouldn't have to worry about this stuff any more. So, I went off the pill & after about 6 months, my periods got all out of wack with being long & heavy & irregular. So, that is when I tried to go back on them & see if the side effects would return but the side effects didn't return this time but the pill just stopped working. So, that is when I started playing the "let's pick a pill" game. I have tried all the ortho's novum, cyclen, tricyclen, etc. I have tried all the lo doses such as loestrin, etc. I'm thinking of telling her that I will go off all hormones for a while & see what happens. If after a few months, everything goes to hell again, then I will ask her to schedule a surgery for me. Thanx for all of your input though! It helps to know that others out there have the same questions I do.
