View Full Version : Flu??? What's going on?

Hi;
Thanks in advance for any advice, this is a great service!!! I live in northern california, and during Xmas, both my boyfriend (Dan) and I had scratchy throats, and felt a bit off. I got over this, Dan's turned into full on flu which lasted 4 weeks! It got to the point of me taking him to the ER, and him being put on antibiotics for pnuemonia, thankfully he's doing fine now.
Now, I did not get the full on flu. However, I've not been feeling myself, I feel tired and uninspired! Today, I was supposed to start my new job with orientation, I called in. The reason I called in is because today (and actually for the past few weeks) I woke up with m whole upper back feeling like it was on the verge of spasm, and I feel very very tired. Right now, my shoulder joints at times, probably once every 20 minutes or so, feel really sore/achey almost like I have been exercising--which I haven't been--my upper back and neck feel like it's on the verge of spasm so they're achey too. I just had a cup of coffee and I really couldn't taste it. I have a weird taste in my mouth, I'm really sensitive to smells--I feel sick if something smells too strong even if it's a pleasant smell. Since yesterday, I found that if I get up and walk, even short distances, I sit down feeling like my muscles in my legs are really tired--again like I've just been running. I also have weird coughing spells where it feelsl like a thorn or tickle is in my throat, I'm not coughing up any mucus and I try to stop myself from coughing because once I start it's hard to stop. I'm not running a fever. I just don't feel like myself.
Does this sound like anything? It's weird and I don't know if it's some illness or flu???? Or maybe it's nerves about the new job? Usually if I'm nervous I just get irritable and my tummy goes into butterflys.
My left knee also hurts or aches.
I don't understand how I can get the flu. My boyfriend had it five weeks ago? He got over it last week. I have not been around people at all because I've not been working the past 2 months, so it's not like I'm around people to be catching this.
Could this be the flu? Joint achiness? Nonproductive cough?? Fatigue??
Could it be the flu even though I'm not full out sick, and not running a fever?
Thanks so much

Sounds like symptoms that my mom had over christmas. She had strep infection. She had to take a potent antibiotic and a steroid. Scarlitena I think is what she had. Just a thought.

Strep infection ???
Strep infection of what? Throat, body, etc? That doesn't sound too good. I can't tell if these symptoms are real or not, am I anxious about my new job? I don't think so because I respond to anxiety differently. Could I just be trying to fight the flu off?
Thanks

Hi,

My friend had a cough/cold virus a few weeks ago. She did have cold symptoms but she said her neck and shoulders ached so much she had to take pain killers all the time. I had to share a bed with her and two days later I developed full on flu! Am still ill three weeks later. Same as you, achey legs and weak all the time. With all the usual symptoms as well as feeling faint and sick.

I think maybe it's a similar virus that affects people in different ways. Although I would have expected it to develop much earlier if it's the same as your boyfriend's. I would go to the doc in any case. They may give you antibiotics but your body has to deal with the virus itself.

Hope any of that helps. :)

Is there a chance that maybe you're pregnant? A strong sense of smell can be a symptom of pregnancy.

This must be really going around. I have been sick with what started as sort of a cold (no runny nose just stuffed) and it developed into a sinus infection. It started 3 weeks ago and I am on my 2nd round of antibiotics. I have the pain in my upper back and right shoulder. The drainage from my sinuses have irritated my bronchial tubes so I cough alot (unproductive) which probably accounts for the pain because it worsens everytime I cough. Even on this round of antibiotics I am not feeling up to snuff yet. The doctor said if it doesn't improve they will have to go with another stronger anitbiotic. This happened to me several years back and I ended up with pneumonia too which was far worse and no fun.

The doctor said I did not have the flu. I have never had the flu (lucky so far!) so I am not sure what the symptoms would be exactly.

I think you should make an appointment and get checked out.

Good luck and hope you feel better!
