I've been stretching lately alot, with the hopes of being able to do the splits one day(both sideways and front/back). I was just wondering if there's anything I should know in specific to help get looser.

Just practice trying to actually "do a split" as much as you possibly can. I remember years ago when I was in dancing school, I was constantly practicing splits, and finally I got it but it does take a lot of practice, at least for me. Some people are more flexible than others however.

Biggest thing to remember is not to bounce - that's a great way to tear something. Get into a position to where is't just past being comfortable, but not painful and hold it for 20 seconds or so and then try to push a little farther (if it doesn't hurt). 5-10 minutes a day should limber you up.

That is SO FUNNY coz I used to do that in high school!!! In fact, it was a big thing then to try and do them.

So, I can do the front splits and I acheived it by everyday just stretching for about 15 minutes - especially the inner thighs. I would sit with feet soles touching and pull feet as close to body as possible, or sit with legs in V shape and lean head down on one knee and then on the other, or would sit in lotus position, stand with legs apart and try to touch head on floor and then - when warmed would just keep inching down day after day until one day - TA DAH!!! - I did the splits.

I can still do it today - even without warming up!! Its seems that once you do it a few times you can always do it. of course I can get down with more ease if I stretch and practise but I can still do the splits. Though, never did master the side splits :(

Thats funny coz the 80s was ALL about the bounce!!

Ah, what's the lotus position? I've heard it before but I never found out. Guess it wasn't that important to me.

Also, I do that one where I sit with my legs in a V and tough my knee with my nose, but when I do I get this funny tingling feeling on my tail bone. Is that normal? It feels kind of...disturbing. It doesn't hurt, just got my worried.

I KNOW! And in Jane Fonda's workout videos, LOL they had you doing the straddled position with a bounce. Ever since, I've been bouncing although I didn't know it was wrong. :bouncing: LOL

I had this same goal when I started TaeKwonDo. I began stretching everyday for about 40 minutes a day and eventually I was able to do both the front and side splits. Took me about a year, but I got there...just keep working at it and don't stretch too hard. I once stretched a little too far, pulled my hamstring and was out of TaeKwonDo for about six months. Just take it ease and let your body build up to it.

Were those six months the reason it took a year to do it? =P

I once thought about just going all the way, whether it hurt or not, but then I developed intelligence, so I didn't. I use to take Tae Kwon Doe too, and I really want to again, but I live in Oklahoma so there aren't too many places to do that. I'm afraid I would build muscle too, and that's a :nono: for me.

Ah, is there any way to stretch that focuses more on the hips? I've gotten to wear there isn't any tension in my muscles, but my hips hurt if I try to go further. And not the stretching hurt that feels good after, more like an aching. I hope this isn't as far as I can go.
