Does anybody know how long someone would have to chew tobacco for in order to get some kind of mouth cancer?

Other than working at a leaky nuclear reactor, I can't think of a faster way to get cancer than chewing. I've seen cases where people have gotten oral cancer after 5 - 10 years of chewing.

Crap, really? After only about 5-10 years. I've been doing it for about 2.5-3 years and have quit now but I'm a little concerned that I'm going to get oral cancer. I think 3 years seems a little short in order to get oral cancer though. How do you know so many people that have gotten oral cancer from chewing anyway?

I think 5-10 is the exception and not the rule. I personally don't know anyone who has gotten it. Just by awareness and surfing the net. www.whyquit.com (http://www.whyquit.com) has 1 example of a 19 yr. old that died from chewing. It's a scary site.

Say, that is a pretty good site. See, I've been chewing about a tin or maybe two a week for three years now. Maybe a little less than three and I don't really have any mouth problems but i get a sore jaw and now my gum is really swollen and hard under my tooth on my gum. Can an abcessed tooth be hard and not squishy like most. I'm sure I don't have too much to worry about because the thing came suddenly and it was very red and sore but now it's not sore at all. Did you ever chew or smoke?

Please go have it checked out! I can't tell you how important it is. It could be nothing but make sure. My brother's cancer started from nothing and I don't want you to take that chance. I don't want to scare you but if you have any concerns-go to as many Dr.s it takes to find out for sure.

You shouldn't make your decision on quitting based on the timeframe from chewing to getting cancer. Everyone's body is unique, some people might get cancer sooner , and some later.
