tnnei1 01-19-2005, 07:48 PM When I get panic attacks, this is what it feels like;
I start to tingle all over my body. I get a rush of heat through my body. My heart starts beating faster. I feel like I am going to collapse or pass out. I start to FREAK OUT!
Just a quick question, this may sound stupid but can you actually die from panic attacks? Can you pass out? Stop breathing? Is there any real need to go to the emergency room? Or are you actualy perfectly safe physically? and just need to get over the horrible feeling and wait for it to pass?
hry33 01-19-2005, 08:09 PM people dont die from panic attacks and theres no real need to go to the ER but many do for the reassurance, some just sit in the waiting room a while as this is enough for them
there are many things that a panic attack can do to you, including sometimes cause loss of memory and out of body experiences but nobody ever dies
tnnei1 01-19-2005, 08:20 PM Thanks hry33
Thats reassuring to know.
Soulcatcher 01-19-2005, 08:33 PM It would be interesting to find out how far someone has gone with a panick attack. I talk myself down or out of them because I am afraid I am going to die. Or internal combustion. Seriously...I feel as if my head is going to just pop off in a ball of fire, not from pain but from fear. I have been panicky all day and usually when I get this feeling something bad happens. So I called my family and told them that I felt as if something bad was going to happen like another world catastrophe....Almost like the animals do when they know a storm is coming they get that real uneasy feeling. Thats what I've had all day. Sorry to sound crazy but I wanted to share because maybe I am in one big panick attack today. So an answer to your question....I sure hope not!!!!
MKLowTone 01-19-2005, 09:06 PM I always used to think I was going to pass out from my panic attacks until somebody told me tht people often think they're about to die, then I started thinking that too!
One thing that you should bear in mind (and one that's helped me) is that even if you DO pass out, your body will then return to normal before you reawaken (ie the heartrate/clamminess/tingles should all go away naturally if you're mind is not alert to stimulate those reactions)
That knowledge alone was sometimes enough for me to think more calmly when I could feel an attack coming on (basically not panicking about panicking)

I don't think you sound crazy at all...in fact the first year I belonged to this board a made a post about this very thing asking if anyone else ever had this happen to them, but I never got any response.
I always wondered if it had something to do with the way my brain worked and was somehow related to the panic disorder.
I asked my Doctor about it once and he said that he honestly couldn't give me an answer.
For me it started when I was around 10 years old and I'm now 37 and it still happens to me every once in a while.
For me the aren't actually feelings, they're dreams.
I'll dream about something and then maybe the next day, next week, next month or sometimes up to 6 months later the thing I dreamed about will happen...well almost happen.
I say almost, because every single time they'll be one or two things that are different from the dream.
Like I had a dream about something happening to someone I know and his name is Eric.
Well a few weeks later something very similar did happen, but not to the Eric in my dream, it happen to someone else I know with the same name.
Now I feel like I must sound crazy :dizzy:
Soulcatcher 01-19-2005, 10:27 PM I've done that. I have told friends or co workers about dreams I have had and one time in particular me and my coworkers were going over the bridge I said it was going to happen and the ambulance was in the same spot the lights on the bridge were blinking like I said the cars that were wrecked were exactly as I told them in the exact spots.
I knew I was having twin girls before I knew I was pg with twins. I seen mobils hanging imaginary from my ceiling but they were VERY old fassioned mobils like thin thin wire with paper filled ducks and one had paper filled irish clovers.....The ducks were for Fallon (fowl) and the Irish clovers were for my other daughter Ireland. Freaky but true. I told my husband so he knew it was true.
I hope nothing happens but I do wonder if it is something to do with the moon or the earth or that kind of stuff. I don't think your strange and sorry to steal the main posters post. Maybe he/she will get an idea of what other strange things go with panick attacks or whatever this strange thing is called....almost wonder if it is a sixth sense.
Too many stories to tell to make me sound more crazy. hahaha So I'll shut up.
I have a really strange question for you.....when ever electricity goes off does your body react like it's shocked? Like almost shut off when it goes out? Like our body is running from energy?
Graciecat 01-19-2005, 11:12 PM I can't say that I feel like I'm shut off when the electric goes off.
But I do know that I just don't feel right when it goes off...it has nothing to do with a fear of the dark or anything like that...because I feel strange..for lack of a better word...even when it goes out during the day.

Thankyou very much, that is very reasuring to know.
tnnei1 01-20-2005, 06:57 PM You guys sound like you are all tapping into something psychic and spiritual.
These preminitions may feel awlful and may be accumpanied at this stage with feelings of dread, but I can't help but wonder if these feelings could be turned into something very positive. You could think of it as friendly warning signs from a gaurdian angel.
That feeling about being turned off when the electricity is turned off, I have spiritual friends who believe we are all beings made up of energy, they would probably suggest that you both are just very susceptable to the ebb and flow of energy in our lives.
Another thing that my spiritual friends would probably say is that; we can manifest things in the physical world what we give energy and thought to in our minds. (this is probably not the best thing to say in an anxiety bulliten board!) however my point is to try and keep our thoughts positive rather than negative.
Hope I don't sound crazy!
carey646 01-20-2005, 07:02 PM YOU CAN NOT DIE FROM A PANIC ATTACK!! Try this, LET your panic get as bad as you can MAKE it get. Just allow it to happen to your body...then, it WILL pass...and...nothing...it goes away and your still alive!!
Nobody in history has ever died during a panic attack!! :)
The more you fight it, the worse it feels.......if you let it happen....it goes away.
Read Dr. Claire Weekes book "Hope and healing from nervous suffering". GREAT book, it has helped me
Amaeta 01-20-2005, 07:17 PM I had anxiety and panic attacks and deep depression and read all kinds of self help books even though I felt nothing was wrong with me. I would feel normal, and all of a sudden these attacks would come on out of the blue. I found out on my own that I was deficient in magnesium. Sounds like a simple solution but it made all the difference in my life. I also stopped foods with additives and all diet foods. {REMOVED}I hope this helps. It took me years and years to find what was right for me and it was really so simple.
etb72 01-21-2005, 07:22 PM I thought if u stiffen up enough u would have to fight yourself.or i thought u could have a heartattack.
leeryan 01-21-2005, 08:22 PM I went to the ER last year for a panic attack. I had no idea then what it was. I was shocked at how easy-going all the medical personnell that picked me up were. I was sure I was having a heart attack or dying. Once I got into the ER, it was clear to everyone there that I just had a panic attack and I felt sort of like a second-class citizen. While I was happy that it wasn't more serious, I felt sort of marginalized. There was no real effort by anyone there to explain to me the details of what I had been through.
etb72 01-22-2005, 08:37 PM i am starting to really stiffen up and stomach tight.and arms tight.do i have to fight this to live.
islandkate 01-22-2005, 10:14 PM  You can't die from a panic attack......unless you are driving a car and one comes out of the blue and you can't even drive!
Before I was put on xanax about 5 yrs. ago, I had a panic attack driving a trechorous highway we have on the island I live on, in the pouring rain and , it was dark. Everyone was speedind and I needed to keep up with traffic......just the way this road is.........I had a huge truck pass me and my winshield was covered, even tho I had at full speed.....at the same time I hit a HUGE puddle wich banged the underside of my van.........also at the same time the 2 lanes turned into 1 lane.....this is in a windy mountain area , well known for accidents. I had my 9 yr. old daughter in the van with me and I went into a FULL BLOWN PANIC ATTACK! I said nothing to my daughter, did not want to scare her, NO WHERE TO PULL OVER , exept into the mountain wall    This was all within seconds, I managed to control myself, even tho I felt I could not breath and my heart was racing and my kidneys pounding........( anyone else have the kidney pounding thing? ) I gripped that wheel so hard ....opened my window to have the rain on my face and just went thru it!! The reason for my determination was having my little girl beside me. She was chattering up a storm to boot LOL :bouncing: But, guess what????? I DID NOT DIE and I found the strength to overcome!! :p I would have popped a xanax if I was taking them at that time!! LOL :jester:
Sorry for going on and on but wanted to give u a scenario....
Kathy
islandkate 01-22-2005, 11:42 PM ;) :jester: Hey, mabee you are gifted and phsycic??!!
Had to slide that in here.....I am a Scorpio...we r VERY sensitive to such things.
etb72 01-23-2005, 11:01 AM hey kate i am getting stiff i am really scared.i am afraid i will have a nervous breakdown or my legs and arms stiffen up.i was going to church for a while but dont feel like a christian right now.
anxious2 01-23-2005, 05:03 PM I have read articles on panic disorders that state a panic attack can last for minutes, hours and even days. I can't imagine have a panic attack that went on for days! Mine would usually last for 30 minutes or so. I have had multiple panic attacks in one day.
Nevertheless, I've never read an article that said a panic attack can hurt you directly. They are scary but apparently won't physically hurt you.
Take care.
