How many minutes do I need to run on the treadmill to actually lose weight and see results? And how many days a week? I'm 5'8 and weigh 130 lbs.

The big question is what does your diet look like. Diet is at least 80% of the battle in the weight loss game. How much weight do you want to lose at 5'8" 130? Body fat is the better indicator of what you need to lose. For example, I am 5" 7" -205lbs sounds nice and chunky but my body fat is 10%.

As a trainer the maximum I use on cardio for people looking to drop weight is 45 min 5-6 times a week but obviosly this is part of a progressive workout plan.

Thanks for the reply! I'm basically wanting to tone up. I had a baby 1 1/2 years ago and before that I was really toned but I haven't really done much since then. My main thing that I want to get rid of is the love handles. I really don't eat very well. I LOVE sweets and I always have to have some kind of sweet at night - I know that's naughty!
I'm a size 6 right now and would love to be a size 2. I would like to lose 10 pounds. So you think that running 45 minutes would do the trick?!?!

Well - if I were training you I would harp on the diet, the diet, the diet. You can eat faster than you can burn it off - especially the sweets! I know it is very hard - sweets are as addictive as heroin. Really try to cut them out - not back out. Just make it through two weeks and you wont even miss them. But if I can't get you to cut them out start with the running and work your way up, cut back on the sugar and you will see some results. Maybe at that point you will make the leap to an extremist like several of us on the board.

Hey Chappy Boy,

You sound like you know alot about all this fitness stuff. Would you mind writing me a little work out schedule to get me lean and toned. ( I work out at home with my treadmill and dumbbells.) So basically what should I do with my dumbells?

Sure -

Day one -

Dumbell squat x 12 reps
Dumbell stiff leg dead lift x 12 reps
dumbell lunge x 12 reps
dumbell bent row x12
dumbell chest press x 12
db shoulder press x12
tricep kick back x 12
db curl x 12

Cardio as mentioned above

Day two - rest
Day three - start again at day one

Start with one set and use a weight that is a challenge. This is a routine to break you into working out after one to two weeks increase to two sets. Follow that for one or two weeks and then its time to progress to new workouts.
