the doctor gave me Zelnorm without a colonoscopy(I have been waiting 3 months for a GI appointment) is that safe??? what if I have a polyp or something else, not just IBS. Also, can I drink alcohol on zelnorm, my 21 bday is coming soon and I don't want to miss out. ARe there any herbs/ supplements I can take--I have BAD constipation, laxatives and fiber help only a tiny, I took a laxative once before I had IBS and I had severe diahhrea, now it doesn't do much that and my stools build up causing my stomach to bloat and they don't want to push out until I use an enema or laxative for a couple days. HELP please.

Same problems, also 21 years old, but sometimes feel like im an old sick person. I think zelnorm is quite safe...its predessesor reglan isnt. So try it, it might actually do wonders (didnt really solve all my problems, but helps the bloating a little bit. Laxatives are bad (duh) but sometimes we just gotta use them:(

Hi katka,

Are you drinking enough water with the fiber. You should try and work up to a gallon a day. I also take something called mirilax. It's a laxative of sorts that you get from your doc. You mix it with juice or your other fiber or coffee or just about anything. It draws water from your system and helps you go. Though I say it's a laxative your body doesn't get hooked on it so you can take it everyday without harm. It doesn't give you D it just helps things along. Might not hurt to try it.

Zelnorm helped me the first time I took it but did nothing the last time I tried it. As to Drinking on Zelnorm...I have no idea. Why not call and ask your doc's office? That's what they get paid for. I can't imagine drinking with IBS but, it's also NOT my 21st birthday. You take care and if you don't mind let us know what you find out incase someone wants to know later.

Love,

Jamie

this is me who wrote the message- Katka. Yeah, ask the doctor on drinking on Zelnorm, its a doctor, of course they are going to say no, so does the pharmacist, even if it doesn't really harm you, they'll say no, mostly just to save their butt if anything happened. Just like when they said no drinking on ZOloft, but I drink on it and I am fine cuz someone else told me they do, thats why I am asking people here, not my doctor.

Sorry Honey,

I didn't mean to insult you! You have a valid point about the doc and pharm. It might give you bad D though(that might be a relief). I can't imagine what else could happen. This is where I have to say "I'm not a doctor". I would call my pharm for you, because she's real open minded and a friend of mine but it's Sunday. If you can wait until tomorrow I'll go ask for you. How's that?

It's safe to take the zelnorm without a scope but, I think you should have one as a part of an IBS dx. IBS can mimic ssssoooo many other things. I'd go back and ask for one. Just my opinion.

I take Flax seed meal - I just buy flax seed at the health food store and grind it up in my blender so it's fresh. It taste nutty and you can sprinkle it on anything. I also take Fish Oil capsles and Probiotics. I take tons of fiber (6 scoops a day)(citrucel). You may want to try different fibers until you get one that helps. You can get just plain psyllium at the heath food store if you want a natural fiber. Drink TONS of water. Try and get yourself up to a gallon a day. That's all the over the counter stuff I take. Avoid the laxatives if you possibly can. There is a presciption that has a laxtive effect(not D but, helps you go) it's calle mirilax. It works by drawing water from your system into the colon the good thing is your bowel doesn't get hooked on it.

I hope this helps more than my last post :) .

Love,

Jamie

Katka,

Okay I've done some checking. Remember this is free info and what info you get off of any online board is worth what you pay for it. There shouldn't be a problem with your 21st bday. It may give you D like I thought though.

Love,

Jamie

Read my thread if you get a chance. I had a colonoscopy, and doctors found nothing. Chances are same will happen to you. IBS is NOT an organic problem. Zelnorm provides temporary relief. I know in my case that it also caused some bleeding and discomfort when i took it.

After they find nothing in the colonoscopy, the specialist will give u diet info, or refer u to a dietician for IBS specific eating. this didnt work for me either. However, it doesn't mean it wont work for you. Try it, and then if ur still looking for alternatives, consider hypnotherapy/yoga/meditation. It sounds simple, but it can help. At least thats what ive found.

Good luck. Hope it all works out for you.

I was told to use zelnorm, gave me bad runs. WHen I took it i had to be near a toilet than i think it bothered my gallbladder cause i could not drink even water without bloating and pressure. And doctors still wont help me with my elimation issues. Just no feeling to go. Take fiber and water. Just feel full all the time and some comes out. That is it. SInce I have no pain-just full -stretched out or maybe inflamation and no one does nothing. I just want to have a bowel movement-completely empty and it dont happen. As for miralax I could not get away from a toilet with that either. I am concerned about this and docs aren't and I know I have diverticulitis. Been thru colonics also. Made things worse. So frustrated and I feel nauseated alot.
