My name is Lisa.I`m 36 and may have ovarian cancer.A cyst was found on my right ovary and some smaller ones on the other one.Took progesterone for 6 mons.had periods, quit taking them and periods stopped.hormone levels were out of wack and testerone was way up.The cyst on the right ovary has gotten a little bigger and the doctor had a vaginal ultrasound done and this picked it up again from the previous 6 months earlier.
My sister had ovarian cancer when she was 26 or 27 and she is now 41. I am worried. Have some mild pelvic pain, fluid retention and some abdominal swelling.Could this be ovarian cancer?Doctor is waiting for blood tests to come back.

Lesa,
Is if rare for some one your age to have Ovarian cancer. Try not to worry to much until the test results come back. I assume you did a CA125, is that correct?

Good Luck!

Yes the doctor added that one to the blood tests he was already having done.I know it is rare for someone my age to have ovarian cancer but my sister was only 26 or 27.

There is also a history of cancer in my family. My dad had colon rectal cancer, than later he died from bone cancer. My grandmother died from stomach cancer, and my sister.Does that mean I`m at risk?

Lisa,
Yes, I do believe you are increased risk. You should ask your doctor. I know that if two or more family members have cancer it increases your risk. What I do not know is what type of family member or what type of cancers qualify for increasing your risk.

Since my mother has ovarian cancer, my OB/GYN has put me on birth control pills. She said that studies have shown birth control is proven to reduce your risk of ovarian cancer, unfortunately some people also believe it slightly increases your risk for breast cancer.

This may be a preventative messure you can take! Ask your doctor. I do feel better knowing that with regular annual check ups, taking the pill, and health life cycle I am doing what I can do prevent this horrible disease. I still run to the doctor every time I have abdominal discomfort, though. Better save than sorry. Afterall, early diagnosis is the key to success!

Write Back,
Natalie
