I was wondering about breast lumps, I think I feel something in my breast, so I went to the doctor and he says I need a mamogram and a sonogram, but he says that it dosen't feel like "anything scary". I think he was probably just saying that to make me feel better, he wouldn't be ordering a sonogram unless he thought it was something, right? He says he thinks it is either a cyst or an enlarged gland, but I am 41, and at this age, isn't cancer more common than a cyst? I have these tests on Wednesday and I'm really nervous, if it looks solid on the sonogram, that means it's cancer, right? Thanks in advance,
I had a mammogram done and needed a follow-up ultrasound because of breast lumps. The doc didn't find them in her exam either. The lumps were solid. I was scared to death!! I went to see the General Surgeon and he did the FNA (fine needle biopsy). Said there was nothing out of the ordinary. Normal breast changes. He wanted me back in in 3 months to check again. He did another FNA!! Well, now you know I'm thinking I'm a goner. Still the same results (he says). He told me to come back in 6 months. I'd like to believe that he knows what he's doing. My left breast really hurts/burns now at times where the lumps are (and they are palpable now). I'll go back in one more time I guess. I'm living in a country where I don't have easy access to different doctors and I'm a woman. We're hoping to move back to the states within 6 months or so, so I'll have a doctor check me out there. But to answer your question - no, solid lumps are not always cancerous. There's no sense in worrying! Have the mammo and ultra-sound done though. The best of luck to you.
P.S. I'm 42 by-the-way. This may be the age for normal breast changes - who knows?

I had a mammogram and an ultrasound performed for the same reason. THe general surgeon then did a fine needle biopsy. he said that I had normal breasy changes taking place. My lumps are solid also and I'm 42 years old. My left breast still hurts and has burning pain in it where the lumps are. I need to go back to have him check again to make sure they aren't any bigger. (does that mean it may be cancerous next time???). At this time, I can only say that all solid masses are not cancerous. Good luck and let me know the results from your tests.

Thanks to both of you for the reply, it makes me feel a lot better to know this is a common thing, and also in case I get the sonogram done, and the person doing it happens to mention that it is solid, now I won't faint! I thought that the solid ones were always cancer. I am not sure if I am replying right on here, I am used to the old site right now, which I like a lot better!! I guess I'll get used to this one, I just like the way you could respond easily to anyone there and it seemed easier to see all the messages. Anyway, I do hope I respond right here, and thanks again for the advice, I'll let you know how the tests come out on Wednesday. It's so good to write on here, you feel like you're getting support, which can be hard to find, especially when you live far from family. My husband and I have 3 kids, and live about 2,000 miles from any family. It's always hard when I worry about a health issue like this, cause my youngest one is 6 years old, and I always worry that she will be left alone, I know I shouldn't think like that. It's important to have a positive attitude, I know some people around my area who have had cancer, and just had a great attitude, like they were going to beat it, and they did. I was watching Olivia Newton-John on tv the other day, and she had breast cancer, and was saying that she just told herself that she was going to get better, and she did. These days, I guess the chances are good if you catch it early. Well, thanks again, and I just can't wait until Wednesday is over with!! This is a learning experience, though, I realize that it's a lot easier to prevent something than to cure it, and now I'm learning alot about what to eat, and how I should be drinking green tea every day. They say that Japanese women drink green tea every day, and they have the lowest rates of breast cancer in the world, and I guess studies they have done have linked it to that. You can buy it decaf, I think the benefits are the same. Thanks again! Val
