I have a contant reacuring sprain on my right ankle, most likely due to my weight, and irritated badly when I do allot of walking. It ussually swells up for 3-5 days, left untreated. But I have been able to get rid of it faster using this techniqe:
I elevate my foot above my heart.
I use a cold compress for 30 minutes in it (almost till its numb from the cold)
I then remove the compress, and stretch it for 15 minutes, and back to the compress.
This ussually puts me in good condition to walk the next day with little discomfort. I dont know about actively running, or other activitys, and probably would not recommend it for at least a week later.

I just sprained my ankle on tuesday. Like you, got x-rays and no broken bones. I was able to get the swelling to go down. The doctor says it will take a few months for the sprain to heal completely. You did do damage to your ligaments, and those take time to heal. Even if your ankle feels 100%, deep down inside there, those ligaments arent 100%. These injuries take time. Im able to use the ellyptical machine and do all of my seated weight lifting exercises. Try that out. Dont push yourself too hard. Your body will let you know when its ready to get back in there.
