View Full Version : Recurring large "bug bites" - but no bugs??

My 2-year-old niece has been getting recurring large "bites" on her legs, bottom and stomache. The bites are filled with pus and must be drained and are extremely painful. We are starting to believe they're not "bites" at all, but may be caused internally. No other member of the family has had any bites or even seen any bugs. She stays home with her mom and brother all day so her environment is pretty controlled. This has been going on for at least 6 months. Their mother-in-law mentioned that she went to the dermotologist for something similar and she was told that it was a form of a staph infection. I know staph is supposed to be extremely contagious and my niece is always with her 3-year-old brother. He has never had any problems. Has anyone come across this? She just developed another one this week. It's rather large and painful and, unfortunately, I think she's still getting the run around. Anyone with any suggestions? I'd really like some info to pass along to my sister-in-law.
Thanks

It does sound like a staph infection. I get them in my arm-pits and breast area. I don't know about them being contagious(?), no one else in my family have ever gotten them. I just put neosporin on them when I get one. They can be pretty painful. It helpes to put a warm washrag on it.

I believe it is a staph infection. I have had these a few times and got the boils on my bottom every time. It is very painful and often requires antibiotics to clear them up. If it gets too big and deep they usually have to lance and drain them. Staph areaus is extremely contagious especially if this is a strain she picked up somewhere. Are you familiar with MRSA? It is a resistant form of staph that can be deadly if it enters the body in surgery ect.. Usually if you are a carrier it will cause boils like your niece has. I had this.. I am now using an antibiotic cream in my nostrils to kill it off sice it colonizes in the nose. Your niece needs to see a doctor. Oh and I got the staph infection from my dad who gave it to our whole family.

My nephew got something called molusscum something or other-- basically was a virus with these huge bumps with a core in them. I suggest going to a dermatologist

Hi there

I was just thinking that maybe it could be scabies??? (Body Lice). Sometimes this itches really bad.

Just a thought.

Thanks everyone. Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you. (I've been out with a cold.) I just spoke to my sister-in-law today. Kaitlyn has another "sore". She's taking her to see an immunologist on Monday. I did read a little about MSRA (spelling?) and I'll mention it to her again. Kaitlyn is only 2 and she's been averaging one every 6 weeks for the past 8 months. I'll let you know what the immunologist says. Up until now, her pediatrician has thought it was a bug bite and prescribed antibiotics to ward off any infections.
Thanks again for all the input :)
Take care,
Johanne

When my brother had one on his stomach he went to the ER and they told him it was a spider bite and gave him something. Well when it didn't work he had to go to a dermatologist who said it was indeed staph and they had to cut him and drain it (they did a culture too). Turned out it was that resistant staph we all had so I am not too surprised that her ped. said it was a bug bite. After my first occurance it was so bad they all had to be lanced and drained but ever since they are just like bug bites and like your nieces so medicine just gets them to go away unless I want to wait it out which takes forever!!!
