Hello to all! I have some questions. I recently had some bloodwork done and total protein levels were elevated by about 1 point. My doctor says not to worry. He says we will retest in a few weeks. He says the only thing serious that this could be is multiple myeloma but my levels would have to be alot higher however he want to monitor to make sure they don't go up. I am only 29 and have 3 small boys so this is so scary to me. Should I be this worried? What could cause me to have this slight elevation besides this? I did have a virus coming on at the time of the test. I started getting sick that same evening. I also had not drank any fluids that day and only had a snack and it was late afternoon. I'm just so frightened by all this I wonder if anyone has some thoughts. I also had a high reading on an antinuclear antibodies test but that has been high for years. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

HI
I can't answer your question about multiple myeloma, but the high ANA over years signals something is going on- although likley an autoimmune disorder, not cancer.
This should be followed up on with a Rheumotologist.

I was diagnosed in 11/2003 with MGUS, due to protein in urine. The doctor also told me not to worry. My first bone marrow was 8%. I wasn't feeling well, lots of strange symptoms. I went to another doctor and my bone marrow was 25%. My 24 hour urine went from 200 to 600 (normal I think is 150 or so). I have neuropathys and severe bone pain that has gotten worse in the past two years. Tommorow I find out my skeletal survey results. I also started Velcade two weeks ago. This is a very confusing disease to me as I don't understand all of it. I am 44 y/o female (widowed) with three children at home. When I read that your doctor told you "not to worry", I wanted to post to let you know that without panicking, you should not necessiarly worry, but you need to take charge of your health, especially with this disease. I think a second opinion is absoulety mandatory. My first doctor seemed very lax about me, and I had to ask him to do a 24 hour urine. From what I read on the internet, it seems that the local doctors are not as experienced with myeloma as Mayo Clinic or Dana Farber would be. My second Dr. referred me to Dana Farber and they are very knowledgeable and get all the correct tests done right away. I am scared, however I have changed my lifestyle, eating habits, quit smoking and I am swimming. Swimming seems to be the best excerise, as I am in extreme pain. I also am spending as much time as I can with family, and they have been supportive of me. I also am drinking as much water as possible for my kidneys.

If you search in internet, you can find that multiple myeloma is elderly people cancer. This cancer almost never attacks people younger than 50 (No incidence of Multiple Myeloma for patient younger than 30 years old reported in NCI annual report).
I know that sometimes special case could happen, but I wish your high protein only because MGUS or another benign disorder.
regards
