I am getting ready to take Chris to the dentist for the first time. He hates people to look in his mouth and I am wondering what they will do to try to calm him down. Can anyone give me advice on what to expect?? Its just a routine checkup.
Thanks
Julie

I don't know how sever your child's Autism is, Julie, but my son's is severe. Luckily, his uncle is a dentist so he allows me to come in and facilitate a successful exam.
There is not much you can do to calm the child down if he doesn't like people looking in his mouth(who does?). You can have your Pediatrician prescribe some Chlorohydrate(sp?) to be administered prior to the exam, but that doesn't always work.
What I do is straddle the dental chair facing my son as we begin. Sometimes the pressure I put on him is relaxing, but it is mainly to give me a postion to hold him still. Then I have to try to keep his head still. The dentist has a tool that will spread his mouth open and lock it in place. This will have to be put in and out a number of times throughout our exams. Put some moisterizer on the child's lips because the spreader can make them sore.
It's not an easy thing, but like most difficult things, such as haircuts and fingernail clipping, it can actually become a relaxing event that a child even looks forward to. It's hard to believe, but it's possible. My child now loves to have his hair cut and manicures are a favorite. In the beginning, these tasks could be very difficult and could lead to quite a scene.

Oh, make sure Dad is going.

When I took my son for his first dental appointment at the age of three they told him that they wanted to count his teeth. That was all that they did at the time. I take my children to a pediactric dentist. The office was very kid friendly. we had a hard time getting them out of the waiting room they had so many toys.

Thanks for your replys, He is going to a ped dentist. Dad is also going (thank goodness). I just spoke to the nurse and they were talking about possibly sedating him which I am not to crazy about. He is very high functioning. His appt is at noon tommorw.

My son first went to the dentist at 3, he had a tough time with the dentist sticking things in his mouth and cried a little, but over all he was fine. The second time we went was worsened by a typical boy in the chair next to him having a total freak out over having a cavity filled, so he didn't do as well on that visit either, but did not have a meltdown at either appt. You can have him get some nitrous (sp) oxide to help him be more calm, but I have never tried this on my son. I do go to a pediatric dentist, and they have other autistic patients, so they were more sympathetic to my son. Good luck to you!!

Well I took it worse than Chris did:) They gave him some stuff to sedate him cause of course he flipped when he sat in the chair. His big front tooth is coming in and the baby tooth is gonna be pulled next week  That ought to be fun. But hes fine right now. Thanks
