View Full Version : Infarction - Right side numbness

This past August my life changed overnight. I woke up with a numb and barely functional right leg with similar effect to my right arm and numbness on that side of my face. There were no other problems with my vision, balance, bodily functions or speech etc. After all the tests it was pressumed to be a result of an infarction in my left basil ganglia originally thought to be lacunar (no effect). My neurologist told me that the chance for MS is low with my symtoms and test results. I received no treatment other than preventative which includes aspirin, exercise and quitting smoking. Over the past few months since my symtoms began I have been slowly but progressively improving the feeling and strength in my right arm and leg and have been very positive toward a full recovery.

A couple of days ago my progress went in the other direction when I was feeling more fatigue in my right side than I have normally been. The next day it was worse. I am now unsure if this is a problem that will continue into the future or if my dianosis could have possibly been wrong. The anxiety from these issues is now heavy on me again. I am only 25 years old. Does anybody have experience with this condition or consistent with these symtoms? Thank you for any comments.

Was your stroke picked up on an mri of the brain? It should have been.
If a brain mri was done, it should have also shown lesions if it were MS-most of the time, but not 100%. Occasionally, MS lesions will show up first on the spine, or not at all.
Have you had an mri of your spine? Even a herniated disc could cause these same symptoms.
The dx of MS is a difficult one to make and your symptoms could be MS-but could be other things as well.
What I was told is that if you have relapsing remitting MS-the symptoms don't normally present in the same part of your body twice-in other words, you would have the right sided weakness, go into remission from that in a few months or less, and then the relapse would bring on a different set of symptoms. I'm sure there are exceptions to this, however.
Being that you are 25yrs old, I'm surprised the doctor was so quick to make a dx of stroke-do you have a strong family history?
Regardless, it is important to get this worked up, since you are too young to be having such symptoms. If you haven't already, get lyme titers, mri's, emg's, take yourself to a major University teaching hospital to the best specialists you can, and don't stop until you have your diagnosis.
If it is MS-it is important to dx and treat early on in order to limit the long term complications and disability.
God be with you.

Thank you. I have had an MRI of the brain and the spine along with a number of other tests. There were no lesions, just a 1 cm area shown on the brain. No family history either. My neuro doesn't feel that it's MS and my dx was a mild stroke. This was my second neurologist and I haven't gone for another opinion. Does anyone know the best to see in Michigan? Thanks for your thoughts.
