Hi Dawn,
Yes I'm ok, just got the ok to drive so you know how that goes? Everyone thinks you are all better and Mom plays taxi.LOL Had to take my daughter to the Mall for a present for her friend.Grocery shop(what a job that was)Son to the Dr for a checkup.Just been running too much and when I'm done I'm so tired and sore.
Thanks for the concern, just trying to stay warm.I hope you are doing better too.

Glad you are OK....yes, Mom does mean taxi but itsn't it great to be back??? I can drive but haven't, I have no desire to move around the mall or the grocery store on crutches...can't wait to walk again! I am doing OK...have energy again and moving around pretty good, the wound is starting to heal and scab over...my husband changes the dressing everyday, still, and this stuff is like glue...he thinks the scab is gonna stick to the bandage soon and pull off, man thats gonna hurt!!! But it is better and soon I will be able to walk, I hope on the 8th. It is 72* here today. WONDERFUL.
Stay warm and don't over do it...glad you are out & about.

Sue,
I did notice today when I read the post...Are you doing well? I am good, I went out to my moms Sunday ans took my crutches...big mistake...my right foot has PF and while trying to go up a step it gave out and I sprained my left ankle...I had the forsight to land right and thanks to the splint I was able to protect the surgical area. Monday I came down with a really bad cold but it seems to be getting better. LOL what a week! On the bright side my foot feels better, the swelling seems to be down and the wound has scabbed over, the last of the dead tissue came off today so just a big scab now, it looks better then it did. How is that blister? Are you walking OK? I see the DR on Tues, I pray I get the green light to start some weight bearing!
Glad you are back.........hope all is well with you and the kids!

dlh,
I'm sorry that you had a bad week.I hope you are feeling alot better now.
I'm ok just have a nasty scab where the incision is. And almost the entire top of my foot peeled...Bad.I went to the Dr Tues. and he took more xrays and said the toe looks good but the joint at the base of the toe is not co operating. He said before that I would probably need that joint fused.I'm thinkin he is thinkin sooner than we thought before. The toe is still sticking up. In fact I think it is worse.I guess I have quite a bit of arthritis in that joint.
Well thats it with me!

dlh,
How's the weather? It is actually a heat wave here over 30.I don't know what to do about the fusion? But he said he is going to take more xrays to see where we go from there. My toe realy sticks up bad. About the sesamoid removal that you had did it take a long time to be able walk correctly? I seem to not be able to put my foot flat Im walking on the outside of my foot.
Now I have a lump(bone) on the bottom under my pinkie toe.
Maybe you can help me with some suggestions.Im hoping he doesnt want to do the fusion soon. Im still in my surgical shoe. The joint that he did fuse is so swollen still. My feet have been through so much they look like something out of a horror movie.LOL
Thanks for listening,
Sue

Sue,
It was 65* and sunny today, chilly outside now with the wind, it is suppose to cold tonite but in the mid 70's all next week!!! I love it here! I guess when you have the X-rays you might know more...I would think he would let the foot heal good before he goes back in. I wouldn't know what to do either, some help I am, huh? I think because we are not healed yet the thought of even more surgery is awful, I know when I went back in for my 1 week check up and he said we had to go back in I had a melt down right there in his office. It will be a hard call, wait and see what he says after the X-rays and weigh all the pros and cons. On one hand better to get it over with. To be honest Sue I never did walk right after the sesamiod was removed. I walked on the edge of my foot to, now my pinkie toe is curled up alot and I have to stretch it out several times a daysor it cramps up. MAKE yourself walk right. It is so hard but I ended up with more surgery and pain because I didn't. they told me if I didn't walk correctly I would end up having to have my hip replaced...several DR. said the same thing. Let the swelling go down first then slowly begin to walk on it the right way, it is too easy to walk the way we do and I would hate for you to have to go through more crap. Vent anytime, if i have to through all this I might as well be able to share things with people like you...maybe it will help. Let me know when you have the Xrays. Oh yeh, after i had the sesamiod I couldnt walk barefoot at all, I have to wear slippers at home, it pads the area and makes it easier to walk. also you can get pads for your shoes at Walmart and that helped too, at least in sneakers. It takes time but really focus on it and dont mess up like I did....

dlh,
How are you doing today? It was in the lower 50s yesterday, boy how I wish I could have gone outside for a nice walk.Suppose to be nice out again today. Then crappy weather for a few days.I have been trying so hard to walk correctly, I think Im getting better with walking flat footed. It is just that my big toe sticks up so far now and my 2nd and 3rd toes are curling under because they have to grab onto the floor. The big toe is still very swollen though. My foot looks totally different than my other foot.It looks so wide. Also I have been having different pain lately(top of my foot between big toe and 2nd)And it feels like it is hot inside.....I don't know?????I give up...Who knows just something different everyday with these feet.

Sue

I know what you mean, if its not one thing its another...sometimes I wonder what else can go wrong with a foot! I know it is hard walking right, it will take time, dont pressure yourself. It is easier when you have no swelling. I hope you didn't take my advice the wrong way, I would just hate for you to have to endure anymore crap because of walking wrong...I wish I had done better with that. My last 2 toes curl under, my foot was swollen for almost 2 years...yep...2 years...and my foot looks wider too, I think it actually is, I noticed after i lost the seamoids I needed a wider shoe on that foot...i dont know, its weird. I also had pain on the to of my foot, it never went away but wasnt always bad...in the same place yours is hurting. I am hoping that having that joint fused will change all that. ?It has set in that that toe is not going to move, it is so weird, I hope i get use to it. I have had really weird feelings in it since yesterday, I pulled the scab loose while I was moving my little toes around, the pain was crazy and it burned so bad.....it has felt weird since. My husband, bless him, keeps telling me that that scab is deep and connected to nerves and everything around it and it is just normal...I on the other hand went into complete panic mode thinking I had messed something up again...I swear this surgery has made me loose my mind, this recovery is not like the others, they were a cake walk compared to this. Wow, isnt that encouraging for you?? LOL. That doesnt mean you will have a hard one, some people breeze through it lucky them. Well, I guess it was my turn to rant...thanks Sue. It sure helps to have people who understand to talk to! Have a wonderful day, hope the weather improves!

Hi,
Do you ever get the feeling that no one understands what we go through with our feet? You tell them that you had surgery and they give you the look or attitude like it is nothing.Like maybe it was a corn removal.LOL Everyone thought when I had my first bunion removed last year that it was where you scrape the bump off, like a callus. So anyway..... I hope you did not do any damage pulling off the scab.I know when I pull off little pieces it feels weird.I really don't have much feeling there, so it doesnt hurt. It looks like it is ready to come off, then when I pull it it bleeds.Guess it wasnt ready. But it doesn't hurt so I pull it.So now I have learned to just leave it alone.I cant wait to go back to the Dr.
Like you said it is great to talk to people from here that uderstand each other. You can vent to me anytime you want! :)

Sue,

Yes, I do get the feeling that people just don't get it! i don't know if it is just me but it seems that once you have foot surgery it kinda snowballs...isn't one enough for cying out loud!!! Well, you are braver than me, I thought about picking off the scab myself but chickened out...i guess the bandage moved it when i was moving around! And now that you mentioned that you still don't have alot of feeling in your foot the feeling is coming back to that area, I can feel when I touch my toe and the other day I couldn't, maybe thats why it hurt so bad...who knows. I will know in the morning if all is OK. I think it problebly is, I am just over reacting, I can't stand the thought of having to do this again....yikes....but we will be normal again and all this will be just another thing we went through. I think the first time I put on a pair of shoes and go out all day without any pain it will have been worth it. I hope...LOL
When do you go back to the DR?

sue...I am going to post a follow up but I saw the DR this morning and everything is great! The fusion is , well, fusing...LOL and it looks good. He took off the scab, it didnt hurt so that was good, i was prepared for pain. I have to change it 2 times a day now but it is so much better. I also got the OK to walk!!!!! YIPPIE...I have the lovely surgical shoe but I havent took my first step yet, was out most of the day with the DR then getting scripts & the shoe, think I will rest for a bit before I take that first step. I am going to use my walker too at first, I am in no hurry and am afraid I will hurt it...me being paraniod!!!! I feel like weight has been lifted off of me. He said all the crazy pain I had the last couple of days was normal and some of it was due to that wound, nerves were some as well. It is sunny & warm today, too bad your not here to enjoy it with me...ha ha. Well, how are you today? Let me know what the Dr says when you go, I go back in 2 weeks.

Wow, is that a change for your foot? Or is it because your foot was covered before and you could not see it?That does not sound good.

dlh
02-09-2005, 11:09 AM
It has been red, purple, etc...off & on. I think it was because I was on it because it is just a little red today. My Dr said it would be very colorful after I walked. My ankle does not want to work, I cant take a step without something to balance on yet.
Has the snow hit? We are getting cold again tommorrow.

If you don't mind me asking, what type of surgery did you guys have??? Was it bunionectomy or something else? I had a bunionectomy 3 weeks ago and had stitches and pins removed yesterday. Cannot put weight on foot withouth excruciating pain, but doc says to try and get of crutches asap or else I will have to contend with other problems like ankles, toes, etc.

susieblueyes
02-10-2005, 07:06 PM
sharonssorefoot,
I have had several foot surgeries. Mine all started in Nov of 2003 with a simple bunion surgery.I was told that I could put weight on my foot only days after the surgery. The pain was not too bad. But I can tell you that the past few surgeries were different. Of all of the posts that I have followed everyone and I say that there is a lot of pain, throbbing and pressure when you put your foot down. That is to be expected.I would think that after 3 weeks you should be able to put some pressure on that foot. Some say don't baby your foot others take your time.I say you have to listen to your foot and only do what you feel you can.
Like I said I have had several surgeries on my poor little feet in the past year. The last surgery was on Jan.7th.I had toe joint fused, tendon lengthened and sesamoid bone removed.I have been up and walking for 2 weeks now.
All I can say is take your time and walk a little at a time until you feel comfortable.
Hope you are feeling better soon,
Sue

sharonssorefoot,
I also have had multiple surgeries on my foot and each one was different...I had my big toe joint fused this time and was NWB for 4 weeks, saw the DR Tues and said I could walk but if you read my post you know easier said than done. I am day 3 now and STILL using my walker because I just cant do it. It hurts terribly but I also sprained my ankle a couple of weeks ago when I took a fall so i dont think that is helping me much. I wonder if 4 weeks is too soon...I was up a bit more today and now it is killing me...think I am gonna slow down, I know my body and I think it is too soon for me. I dont want to mess anything up because i have done that in the past and ended up having to get it fixed. Take your time...pace yourself. We are all different and all heal in our own time. I hope you heal soon and heal well, good luck to you, I know how frustrating this can be...this was my 5th surgery on this foot, I'm done!!!!!

Just a quick ?Have you ever had the feeling of your foot feeling like someone just turned on the heat? Like if you were in the car and the heat by your feet came on?The past couple days I have had that feeling all the way up past my ankle.Really weird.Never felt that in the past surgeries.

Sue,

Does it last??? do you have more pain? swelling?? is it hot to the touch? do you still have that blister? i have had it feel hot, not too bad though and not like you decribe...al the ?? because my Dr gave me a list of things to look for because of the wound and infection.....heat was one of them. It could be too just when it swells when it is down...usually when i feel any heat in my foot it also has a prickly feeling and it has been down. let me know whats going on with that...sorry I cant be more helpful.

dlh,
No it doesn't last , it comes and goes but is warm to the touch. It is not really red just pink from the new skin.I have also had some discharge from under the scab which I had told the dr about before and he said it is from the inside stitches.Didn't seem too worried before. It is gross it is puss I know it is.I would think it was infected, but I'm listening to him. When I had the infection before it was cellulitus and strep so there was no sign of discharge or anything. So this is different. Thanks, Sue

dlh
02-10-2005, 11:09 PM
Sue,
I would call him and tell him...puss is infection and it shouldn't be oozing...at least he can call you in some antibiotics just in case...insist on it, its your body! It could be nothing but why take the chance? Hope it turns out to be OK!!! Let me know though how you are! dlh

Hi, My foot is the same still leaking something?????????To me it looks like puss, debateing weather or not to call him.Is your foot still all different colors?Remember your poor little foot has been through a lot. I have been through alot also but not 2 surgeries within a week or two and also I did not have the same joint fused so I believe that my foot is not as sore as yours. Take your TIME!I hope you are ok. I know it is frustrating for all of us.Sorry you are having so much pain.

I have to change my derssing, ugh...I hate it. Let me know if you call him, I feel like your mom or something, ha ha, I just dont want you to get worse...as bad as my wound is I have had no oozing...that really concerns me about yours.

Hopefully you don't have an infection.Just watch and make sure that if your foot is red it doesn't travel up your leg.Thats what happened to me last time. It was terrible. My foot is not really red, just pink I think it is from where it has already peeled and it is new skin.I hope I dont have an infection either. The way I described my foot is that it looks like stuff from inside a pimple. We sound great huh? LOL I'll get back to you later.

I started the meds already...so far the redness is only about an inch or so around the site and the toe...no more than it has been except for right around the wound where it is swollen...the only time i get red up my leg is when i have been standing but that is normal...what kind of infection did you have again???

Hi,
So Im back now from my big night out.I went to see the Dr. and he removed the scab and dug out around where the inside stitches were. Thank god Im still numb there, so I did not feel much.I have 2 little holes(bb size) where he took the scab off that I have to scrub with a brush 3 or 4 times a day to scrub away anything that is trying to scab over.Does this make any sense to you?LOL.My daughter went with me and had to leave the room because it was gross.
This whole thing is driving me crazy.Let me know how you are feeling.Hopefully the antibiotic will help us both.

YUK!!!! What a pair we are...LOL. I am glad you went and I hope it heals up now. You have to brush it? Thats weird but if he said do it then...I can blot mine with saline but gently they said...it looks the same today but it has only been 1 day. I just want it to heal and I want to be able to take a bath and wear a sock, the little things!
I bet your daughter wont go with you again, I would have left the room too! I was glad mine was numb too, at least we didnt feel it! I took 4 steps yesterday without my walker, my ankle seems to be getting stronger...I havent been up much yet this morning but hope to walk a bit more.

Yea first he said to use a toothbrush but then he gave me one of those brushes that they use to scrub your foot before and after surgery. It is pretty soft. I haven't used it yet, so it is starting to scab over.Just getting ready to take a shower so I will do it then.My foot really hurts today though. Those Dr's just don't understand, I think they think we are made of stone or something they are so rough.(LOL) I have to go pick up my script today, I had 1 pill left from before so I took that last night. Hopefully they will do the trick. 4 steps that's a start, just take your time.Don't go running around Disney or anything. :bouncing: LOL

i always hurt worse after I see him! no running around Disney...LOL. We go there alot actually, my husband works for them so we get in for free, usually we take friends and family...you can only see Disney so many times so we never go alone!
Have a good day...I hope to be able to go out soon, once I can hobble good enough...ha ha

I was standing right there when he called. The pharmacy said they did'nt get anything. So the pharmacy called all the other same company pharmacies in the area and no one recieved a call.So now I have to call the Dr. in the morning. He said it was not infected yet but wanted to give me the antibiotics just to be safe. Especially since he dug the crap out of it.Wow, you are on your way now....isn't it great to be able to do something for yourself?I use to get so frustrated just trying to carry coffee in the morning and spilling it all over.I got to the point that I use to stick stuff in my bra.LOL Yep this is getting very OLD, I can't wait to get back to work,I'm a single mom and need to support my kids. This diability doesn't pay crap. I have an appt. on Tues and we will see how everything is. I told him how my foot keeps getting hot and he said it might be from the turnicate(sp)Doesnt make any sense to me.
Well have a good night and talk to you tomorrow,
Sue

02-13-2005, 12:21 PM
Sounds like the pharmacy messed up...that has happened to me, they actually lost a written script I had dropped off. I am glad it was not infected afterall but arent you glad you went anyway? I havent used my bra but good tip, I do try to wear something with pockets or if I am in sweats roll my waist band so I can stuff stuff there. I was up to 10 steps last nignt on my own..whoppee!!!!! It is sad that it is so exciting to me...LOL. I know you understand though as silly as it is. My wound is real tender and it itched all night, it drove me nuts. That has to be a good sign. It must be hard for you being a single mom and having 3 kids and being injured...I would have been lost this time without my husband and my son...he is 21 and has done the grocery shopping for me...my husband has done everything else...everything...he wont let me lift a finger, he is just now letting me be up and help in the kitchen some. The last 3 surgeries my son was younger and I ran a home childcare...talk about crazy but I had plenty of extra little hands. how long do you think you will be off ofwork? Some disability is better than none, I have non but then I work for my parents...I do miss work but it is a tough job and I have no idea when he will let me go back...at least I can go for a few hours and leave or sit when ever I want to, last time I was managing a convienece store...I know how you feel being on your feet all day, thats a hard job too and you are in a grocery store, right? OH, I am talking your ear off today, sorry...I am sure the boards arent liking this...hehe Have a good one...get better

I called the Dr office today and of coarse I got the answering machine that said if this is an emergency dial 0. So of coarse I did'nt . I will call tomorrow to see if he still wants me to get the meds.I just keep scrubbing.LOL I called disability the other day and they said that the dr. sent in an update to go back to work on the 28th.Honestly I really don't see how I'm going to do it. Yep, I work in a groc. store. It's not really just being on my feet all day it is the bending, walking, running, squating, tippee toe, climbing, crawling and whatever else I have to do all day. I tried standing on my tippee toes the other day, Ouch.I dont know, we will see how I make out on Tues.Keep up the good work with the walking.

I go to the Dr a week from tommorrow...sure hope I can walk by then, he said I may go into sneakers but I really dont see that happening yet. Maybe you wont need the meds, is it doing Ok with the scrubbing? Your job sounds like mine...LOL...whatever needs to be done and very physical...I like it when my feet are good! Ok, I went to the dr at 10am and all he did was check the inision. He said the incision was healing good.I think he was in a hurry because I went back in to ask him about wearing a shoe and he had already left the office. This was unusual he ALWAYS takes time with his patients. So his nurse told me to call back and she would ask him.So he said NO WAY we have to take xrays next week to see how everything is healing.I had asked him if he thought I was going to be able to go back to work on the 28th and he said we will see how the xrays come out.So I'm confused....do I tell work Im coming back on the 28th? Does he understand that I can't just say ok tomorrow Im coming back to work.I'm scared that something is wrong and he is not telling me. The last time he did the xrays if you remember, he said something wasn't healing the way he was expecting.
So thats my story....

Sue,
Sounds like you had a very frustrating day. If something was wrong wouldn't he tell you? I wonder why he didnt x-ray it today...but like you said he seemed in a hurry. I wouldnt worry until he x-rays it...of course I can tell you that when I know if I were you I would be...LOL. Can you tell work that it may be the 28th unless there is a problem when you go back next week to the DR? I know it is hard because they need to know but what are you suppose to do when you don't even know yourself??? Don't worry that something is wrong, he is being cautious, I am sure he doesn't want to commit to you returning to work yet because he may feel you need a bit longer to heal. Stay positive Sue...take it easy and don't rush your healing ...when was your surgery again?? Sorry, I don't even remember how many weeks I am without looking at my calander. Let menknow what happens next week when you go but I will talk to you before then.......

Hi,
My surgery was on Jan. 7th. Im just hoping he doesnt want to do another surgery yet. He did say down the road that I would need a fusion. He had said the last time I had xrays that I had a lot of arthritis in the joint and it had gotten bad so it was not healing right. I wish he had fused the toe in Jan to get it over with. How many steps are you up to now?Hope you are make good progress :bouncing:

I thought it was the same time as mine...I don't know if it is old age (turning 40 next week...ouch) or the pain meds but my memory is gone! It would have been nice if he had fused it then and not waited, he knew the situation with the joint. But then there is your job, maybe he thought it wouldn't progress quite as quickly. I attempt to walk most of the day now without my crutch. I am not walking great but it gets a bit better after the first few steps and I have been moving around the house during the day every hour then I rest. I do need the crutch my evening as my foot or ankle just can't take it. I worry about weight bearing already...not quite 6 weeks, right? I have read on this board of people being NMB from anywhere for 4 weeks to 12. I guess alot depends on your DR and whether or not you had a bone graft, which I did not. He tok the X ray before giving me the OK to start walking to make sure the bone was fusing. I am just worried I will mess it up again. The wound still hasnt healed. It drives me crazy and it hurts, the strap on my surgical shoe lays right on it, what a surprise!!! Ha Ha. It is smaller though but it still looks gross. I am a bit whiney today can you tell? But I am getting better, slowly. I hope you get good news when you go back. Have a good day & stay positive!

Mine feels warm outside but not inside, I hope someone here can shed some light on that for you, I didnt reply there because I have no idea why......other than that how are things? I am moving slowly along, no major changes except walking alittle more and cooking again...yippie. Hope all is well on your end

Dawn,
Sounds like you are making good progress!Doesn't it feel great to feel semi back to normal?Ya I had told my Dr before about the warm feeling in my foot and he said it might be from the turnekit(sp)Doesn't make any sense to me but...... whatever. So I thought I would post on here to see if anyone had experienced the same thing. I go back to the Dr. on Tues.and hopefully will get some good news so I can go back to work.Don't you know I get a summons yesterday in the mail for jury duty on the 7th.This happened last time I was out with my foot and I had to postpone it.So if all goes well I will be back to work for a week then out again. How is the weather there? The sun is shinny bright here but very chilly.Hope all is well with you,

Sue,

I am sending you good thoughts!!!! It is warm here but gloomy, I hate ot when the sun isnt out! I went to the Dr this morning. Actually it is good news, the fusion is great, he is really happy with the way it is healing. BUT the wound...he took measurements today and I go back in 2 weeks. If it hasnt healed or if it isnt much smaller he will have to take me to sugery and open it up, clean it out and reclose it. YIKES!!!! Just the thought makes me shiver...will it ever end!!!!! *#@*& AHHHHHHH
I would have gone back into a sneaker at 8 weeks, which is a week from this Thursday but cannot go into shoes until this ulcer heals up. Or go back to work, which I though might be in another 3 weeks or so. Oh Well. So, give me some good news about you!!! I will check back in a while to see if you have posted yet.

Hi,
OMG are you kidding me!!!!I went to the Dr. and he put me out of work for at least for another 2 weeks. If I were to go back now he said I could fracture what they just did.He also finally said that my job is basically ruining my feet and says I should not go back doing the same thing. He took xrays and said that everything is healing good BUT........my toes are worse than before.Darn it, I wish they had fused the other joint when they did this last 4th surgery. He told me to start wearing a sneaker. So yeah right, easier said then done.I came home put on a sneaker, was a little tight but felt ok.I wore it for about 2 hours and my foot was killing me.So I took off the sneak.I now have a blister on top of my second toe and on the inside of my second toe.If you remember one of the reasons I had this last surgery was because my big toe stuck up.Well now it sticks way up and my poor other little toes(especially 2nd one)are taking a beating. They are curling under like hammertoes which when I wear a sneaker they are rubbing on the sneak causing blisters. The Dr. is sending me to another excellent podiatrist for another opinion again. But he says that's the only thing that will fix this problem. He also said if I decide to do this I have to wait at least 8-12 weeks for this to heal.
Enough about my day at the Dr.I'm sorry to hear that you might have to have another surgery.Did he say why your foot isn't healing?Hopefully you wont have to!
The sun is out hear again which does brighten the day alittle. But I still wish I was in Florida. :D

Sue..I am so sorry to hear of all the problems you have had...If you remember I had bunion/hammertoe surgery last May. I was out of work from May until November. I knew something was wrong with my second toe as it HURT with every step I took. The doc finally said that the bone had grown across and the only way to fix it was with MORE surgery. On the 15th I had surgery and here I sit with my foot wrapped up and a pin sticking out of my 2nd toe. On March 2nd I'm having the stitches removed. The pin will stay in another week or two. Of course there are no guarantees that this surgery will fix my problem. Before the surgery in May I was a very active person. I am praying that this last surgery is successful as I want my life back.

What is it with us????? I am sorry your toe is up so far...maybe you should wear a bigger shoe for now until the swelling is down...would that help or is it the toe causeing all the problems? I dont understand why he did not just fuse it...sometimes I think DR's have no commen sence. Have the second opinion but you know he will agree with your DR...never hurts though to have one if for nothing else peace of mind.
Do you think you will have the surgery as soon as you heal or will you wait a while? I would get it over with, just the thought of more surgery drives me insane...LOL.
I know you need to go back to work but it would stink if you did go back and fracture the new bone...I am afraid of that when I go back so I know I am going to baby it for a while. He didn't say why it hasnt healed but he was surprised that it wasnt almost closed by now. And as much as I ask questions I didn't...once I heard we may have to go back in I was no good...I am praying it heals though, even if it is smaller he will hold off on more surgery. I will keep you in my prayers too...I know you have a tough descion to make with this fusion and I know going through another surgery so soon will be hard but think of the payoff! Florida is great but in August & Sept. it is sooooo hot you just want to die! Keep in touch...

Hey, I remember you.LOL
If you remember I also had surgery back in May and was out until Sept. Now lucky me I had surgery for the fourth time on my other foot and it is a pain in the you know what.I just(Jan7) had 2 Drs try and fix a complication that I had from back in Nov 2003. They removed my seamoid bone lenghtened a tendon realigned everthing and fused the toe joint below the toenail.Well they thought that was the answer but guess what? Im worse now than before. The only good thing is I dont have the pain from the sesamoid bone. Now my toes still sticks up and all the rest of my toes are curling under because they are taking all the stress because the big toe is doing absolutely nothing.I have very bad arthritis in that joint so my big toe is stiff and is causing me all the trouble.I was in so much pain from wearing a sneaker for only a few hours yesterday.I actually woke up in the middle of the night with my second toe hurting. When is it ever going to end.

Dawn, I'm not sure what Im going to do. I really can't afford to be out anymore. But I cant stand these problems either. It's driving me crazy.I'm waiting for my Dr to call back with the appt for the second opinion. His nurse just called and said she talked to him about the problem with the sneaker and he said the same thing as you, wear a bigger shoe.Crap how big can we go?LOL Everytime I have surgery I have to buy a new pair of shoes. The shape and size changes everytime.I was in a 7-7 1/2 and the last time I bought new ones they were a 8 1/2 This is bull........I forgot to tell you before that I actually woke up in the middle of the night with pain in my second toe.I think it is because it is curling up so much. Im going to try a different shoe today and see what happens. Thanks for listening :)

I will listen ANYTIME......if we have to go through all this we might as well be there for each other...LOL... I know what you mean abiut the shoes. I went from an 8 to a 9...sometimes 91/2 and always too big on the right foot if it fit the left. I have to admit that one time i got so frutrated trying to buy shoes after a surgery that I switched sizes, one 8 and one 9. Guilt won and I have felt like crud ever since, I definantly don't reccomend doing that... he he. I really feel bad that you are having to go through this. I need to stop complaining about my wound, thats nothing compared to another fusion...I know things will work out for you and when you do get it done I will let you vent anytime you need! Hang in there Sue, let meknow what the second op says. Good luck getting shoes, that will be me in a few weeks...ugh...here I go again! LOL!!! I sometimes get pain in my secind toe too, ever since the sesamiod came out. I stretch it and bend it up & down, it seems to help some...whats weird is it usually happens at night...when I am sleeping...how odd!

Sue...I hope your doc can up with a solution for your problem. I know how frustrating it can be. The only shoe that I have found comfortable is a sandal type shoe that is from Sun Bay called Evergreen. They have velcro straps and are really soft on the bottom. I bought them at a store called Bealls here in Florida. Dawn, I believe I saw on one of the posts that you live in Florida. You might want to check them out.

This Dr. is so busy that the earliest he could fit me in is in May.Hey, maybe my foot will cooperate by then.I guess until then I just have to fight the pain and keep buying bigger shoes.I'll keep exercising the toe, trying to get it to relax down.I just know that Im going to need another surgery(fushion)My Dr. said that's about the only thing left to do.We will have to wait and see.

I dont know if you have read any of my other posts here? I have had BAD back pain for 4-5 years and have had xrays and mri and they say it is all negative. It is driving me crazy between my feet and back.I just went for my first chiropractor appointment and Im not sure if Im going to go back(appt.tomorrow)Have you ever been to a chiro? It was torcher(sp)I also have a referal for pt I think I might try that.I really think my back is related to the Lupus that I have.Although the last time I went to my rhumetolgist all my blood work is normal.I know some of the pain is probably from the different way that we walk with all of our foot surgeries.

We are alot alike, my hysterectomy was back in 89...man , you have had a bad few years havent you?? No wonder you need a vaca!!! The lump isnt as red today, i was going to call him but I really think it is the tendon, it hurts all the way up the back side of my ankle but it is sooo tight when I do my ROM I think it may work itself out. I am being postitive...hope it pays off.. ha ha I have mild back pain but I have severe neck pain and I too have had a number of test that show nothing. I did go to a chiro many years ago and I liked it OK except when they would pop my neck, I hated that. I went for my neck though and it didnt really help me much but I hear they are great for back pain. I would give it a few times and see if it is something you can do, if it works thats one less body part cauising pain! With me it is my foot and my headaches, also had MRI's and seen a range of DR with no answers, I take meds for them when they are bad but I have only had a couple since my surgery. Is it hard to deal with the Lupas? I do not know much about it but know a couple of ladies that have it. If my lump gets worse I will call the DR, I have called him for so much I am starting to feel bad! Sorry about the snow storm, it is sunny and windy here today, about 72* I think. I use to live up north but we have been in Fl since I was 12, I visit Ohio every few years to see my dad but I just couldnt live in it anymore! Enjoy the day and stay warm!!!

Sue,
the lump is stll there but I havent called the DR. So much has happened and my memory is a bit faded but for some reason I think it might have been there before the surgery...I was begining to have some pain in the arch and I remember telling my Dr about it, he was afraid I was begining to have PF problems in that foot too. I see him next week, I will have him check it out then. I am really begining to "feel" things again in my foot, I have all the feeling back on the left side of my toe but not the right, thats OK because the numbness helps with the pain. Remember when we thought it was weird that your DR had you scrubbing the holes you had on your incsion? Seems that it stimulates tissue growth. My stepmom is a nurse-she puts people to sleep, I know if I try to spell it it will be wrong...LOL. anyway she has worked cases where they put people under and scrub the heck out of an open wound to stimulate the tissue. She suggested if I can stand it to get a soft brush, some betadine and do it myself if I can stand the pain.....havent done it yet but I might try it if it doesnt get smaller by the end of the week. I clean it now with saline and rub it but the numbness has worn off the last 2 days and I am such a chicken...Saw on the news about all the snow.....sunny here!!! LOL
Do you just feel isolated at all? I am having one of those bummer days today...I know my friends are sick of all those foot stuff...havent really seen them but email is dropping off...poor me...LOL...it is so good to have these boards on days like this and know at least we can get it out!!!!!!!!!! thanks for the quick release! Did you start scrubbing yet?I spoke with my Dr today about my disability because my paperwork that I got in the mail yesterday said that I have been approved until march 7th.I dont even go back to see the dr until the 8th.He says oh NOOOO you can't go back for at least another 2 weeks after I see you.I said *&^*$%# if you get the picture. My foot feels better but is still swollen and I cant find any shoes to fit .Not sure if I would be ready to go back anyway. If he seriously plans on doing the other fusion I would rather use the disability for that. I get 26 weeks a year.Oh and I still have not figured out what Im going to do about my job.He does not want me going back doing the same thing.I hope he doesnt plan on me staying out until they fuse it. :confused:I hope you are doing ok. I was so sore today that I sat in the chair and hardly moved...needless to say i did not make it to get the brush & betadine to scrub my foot. Plus I am just not sure I can torture myself that way...LOL. It is getting smaller, at least it seems to be.
At least you get some disability for being out and I agree with you about saving it for the fusion, you will need it for sure. Hopefully he will let you go back in a couple of weeks...I guess I should ask when I can go back. I am in no hurry, I sure need the money but at least I can take my time...one advantage to having your mom for your boss... he he... I bet you gave him some real pretty words, LOL!!!!! Is there anything else you can do at your job? Thats a tough call, I know. I have been told for years to get a job off my feet...never did so maybe it is my own fault my foot is so messed up. I will be so glad when I can look back on this and it is behind me. I have a really good day then the next I am in so much pain I think it will never end, I know you understand that. Yeh, some of those post were interesting...for lack of a better word there! Ha ha!!!
If it makes you feel any better it is COLD here and RAINY...YUK!!!!! Just adds to my bad moods! Oh yeh, I ended up getting mens shoes once because I couldn't find anything my foot would go into, they are wider or something...might want to try that for a temp fix.

Hi Dawn,
I see you on line, did u go to your Dr. yet? I did and Im going crazy. He says that I deffinately need the fusion but is insisting on waiting for me to see this other Dr in May. He said he would like to keep me out till then because my other toes are getting worse very quickly and the more Im on them the worse they will get.He says if it is a problem with work that I can go back and try and work then let them know I can't do it and he will put me back out. I just wish he would do it tomorrow lol and get it over with. I know the other Dr is going to say the same thing because it is the only thing left to do.Im totally confused.Helpppppppp

Ok......if it has to be done like he says why doesn't he just do it and forget the second op?????? Is it an insurance thing?? Is he unsure??? I don't blame you for wanting to get it over with, I would too. That's too bad you have to go through it again!!!!! Man, I am really sorry Sue. So, are you going to try to go back to work? Is there anyway you can modify your work load or is it just too hard to do that? What about using one of those dreadful boots.....they are hard to gt around in at first but keep your foot off the ground...would your insurance pay for one? Would your Dr agree? Just throwing out ideas here, I used one when I was managing the convienece store, it made work easier once I got the hang of it.
Yes, I went to the DR. And the foot saga continues......AHHHHHH %$@@^&*((^%E
My wound is healing, he was thrilled! I can go back into sneakers today if I can handle it, he said go slow. I can try to go back to work next week but if it hutrs sit down and if it doesnt stop, go home. thats a no brainer, LOL. The fusion is fantasic!!!!! Now, the lump. It is a Plantar Fibroma...I was looking it up before I was going to post...didn't find much yet but I will keep looking. He said we will talk about on my next visit in 4 weeks. He mentioned the "S" word. surgery. Nope. Not now. Maybe never. I will try everything else first. So...looks like we both need some chocolate...LOL. Let me know how you are and if you decide to go back to work...wish me luck , I am going shopping later for shoes, I dread it.

Wow, we are so much alike.LOL I was reading on one of the other posts that some girls wanted to get together(meet) after all of them had recovered.Wouldn't that be funny for us?OK now the work situation.......I can't go back unless I'm 100% and I have to be in a closed toed shoe.Nice huh?Well I was suppose to talk to the Dr. by 3:30-4:00.So that he could notify the disabilty. So I called him a little while ago and we talked about the other opinion. He said he totally agrees about not waiting.(his nurse put in a good word for me)He said whatever makes me comfortable. The only thing he said is some Dr's like to use implants and he doesn't care for them.Do you have one?I asked him if he could just ask the other Dr. that assited in my Jan 7th surgery to see what he thought since they both said I would need another fusion adventually anyway. So I'm assuming that I wont be back to work for a while now  It just made no sense to me to wait around for two months just to hear the other Dr say the same thing. If I could go back to work light duty it would be great then I could wait. But the Dr. said the more I use the foot the worse the other toes would get and I would end up needing surgery on them all.
I dont know anything about the plantar fibroma but if you can avoid another surgery than try your hardest.Iam so sick of surgeries it is not even funny. I was telling someone at work a couple weeks ago that I might need another one and she said omg cant you just take pain meds? I mean omg be real. This is not what I enjoy believe me.You know how it is, right.
Good luck shoe shopping, now I know I deffinately need to take those shoes back that I bought.
Thanx I just needed to vent alittle,

I am eating chocolate as we speak......had some for you too...LOL. So, sounds like your gonna do it soon, when do you think you will do it or do you have to talk the other DR first? There is no sence waiting and you don't want to risk hurting the rest of your foot & toes...that would be awful. Sure, load up on pain meds...if it were only that easy!!! It's funny she said that, I get alot of, oh, your still taking pain medication??? YES. It hurts darn it! My Dr is Mr. conservative and doesn't like pain meds but he gave me more and told me I was gonna need it now that I am up & around more. Fun. I plan to aviod more surgery, I did find a little more info and one article said there is about a 70 % chance the tumor will grow back after it is removed. In my world that means you bet it will grow back! Ha! I have an adrenal tumor that is just there, never found out why but I am not sick from it so they leave it alone...anyway my body grows things...thats why the hystorectomy at age 25.... But that has nothing to do with our feet.
Have you heard.....your having more surgery??? Why do people assume we like it or something? My son always tells me hey mom, whats left that they can do to you???
This last foot put me at a total of 14 I think...the word surgery gives me the willies!!!
Sue, I really want this to go well for you. I really wish you didnt have to go through it again. I do not have an implant, my Dr said I wasnt able to have one because of all the other surgeries and not having the sesamiod bones. He said I would end up having it out in a few years and getting the fusion so he didnt want to even try it. My advice, get the fusion. The implant works for some but I think because you had a sesamiod removed it wouldn't be a good thing. Why take a chance...its not worth it at this point. And I really thought it would bother me the toe not moving but ya know, its not as bad as I thought. But my top joint still moves...even so, the muscle around the area moves so its not as weird as I thought.
Vent all you need. I may be back after the shoe shopping to vent myself! It would be fun to meet sometime.....you know those ladies are gonna have a great time when they do met up...especially in the city!

Hey, how was the shoe shopping? Did you read about perrin? It is so weird that I had just posted to her to take care of herself or she would end up in the hospital.I feel bad for her.I know how you feel about the amount of surgeries that you had. I will be going on 13 or 14 too. This really sucks  Well the Doctor is calling me back this morning and I will see what he has to say and let you know.

Sue, cute shoes???? what are those???? LOL I found NOTHING. I tries a size bigger, my size, 2 sizes, a mens pair. You can really tell the toe is up in a sneaker......no wonder you have problems finding shoes!!! I came home mad as heck and had my husband find my other sketcher...I have been wearing the right one but hadnt seen the left one since the first surgery in DEC. They are the kind of sneakers that have no back, I love them . anyway I untied the laces and pulled it apart and guess what. IT FIT. A little snug but it feels good, the toe os real boxy, guess thats the key. Yes. I read about Perrin. I feel bad for her but I hope she learns now she has to take care of herself and slow down...thats the last thing she needed. Let me know whats going on... we could write a book about all the surgery we have had...LOL

I had surgery on my foot right before my birthday a couple years ago...got lots of sympathy b/day gifts.....wasnt so bad afterall!!! LOL I am going to the sketcher store this weekend with hopes of getting a pair with more support for work, cant wear the ones I have to work for sure. Do you agree? You said you have sketchers? Are they sneaks or shoes? Sue,

We are getting back to life.....I never realized just how active I was until now...I sure miss it! I think your right about the shoes, if you get something now you will more than likely have to replace them. your foot will change AGAIN after the fusion. I tell ya, at this point I would do an add for Sketchers. Like I said, I already had some but I wore them out again tonite ( church thing , like I didnt do enough today already...LOL) and they feel so good. I have sneaks but they have a pretty good variety, I have a pair of sandles from the summer but I am not ready to try them yet. They have some real cute shoes, mainly sneaks but some look kinda dressy. We have an outlet store here, got my pair of 50.00 slip ons for 15 bucks...cant beat that!
I will think of you when I am soaking in the sun....it will be right about 70* which to us is chilly when your on the water but I bet you would be really warm, huh? Just win some $$$ to buy new shoes with.....thats motivation! Time to rest...hope your doing the same!

Girls,
I read about these fusions everyday becuase they are on the same page as all the bunionectomy stuff which is what I had done. I am just very curious as to why you had fusions, what were your symptoms? It sounds like just an awful surgery and recovery as the bunionectomy. I love reading these boards. When I am feeling sorry for myself all I need is a reality check from all you brave awesome ladies!!! I am 8 weeks post op and doing great but only becuase I relied on these boards as sort of a support group!!!!! Lisa has been a great friend. WE were about 2 weeks within eachothers surgery and really were able to find some humor in it all!!!

Peace and love to all you brave ladies!!

Sharon,

These boards are great, aren't they? I wish we could exchange emails because Sue & I have become friends too.....oh well...if you read all of my post the whole story ends up being told...it is soooooo long but a good read... ha ha. Brave??? Thanks. But really, it was a matter of pain. It got to the point I could barely make it through a day without awful pain...then I started waking up at night. Thats when I fianally decided to do it. My days were consumed with foot pain, on a day when it didnt hurt it was like...WOW, my foot doesnt hurt, how weird! And if it werent from reading on these boards before, like Eko & some others, I don't know that I would have had the nerve to do it. The thought of an non reversable procedure didnt thrill me...still doesnt. I have alot of foot problems but thank God I did not have bunions, that is a tough one too. We are all brave, i have had alot of surgery but I think foot surgery is by far the worst. I read your post, and Lisa's...there have been days when I've just had it but then I read something you or Lisa said and I think well, if they can deal I can too! I think we are all awesome and alot stronger from this. OK....this is starting to sound like a Halmark card.......LOL
Keep up the good work...remember, BABY steps!!!

Hi,
Belize was OK.Very sad and a poor place, what we saw anyway. Houses with no windows on stilts and little kids begging for money at thier school.I don't know I just found it to be very sad,I guess we don't know how lucky we are.I just recently got a new boyfriend he said that he would take me on a cruise but wants to take me and my kids to Disney first. He goes twice a year to Disney.Hey you never know maybe I will see you there.LOL He said he goes in May and July.I guess May is out cause of my surgery.Hopefully I will be up and about by July.Don't know if I will have a job or not but oh well......
So how has your foot been feeling?Did the swelling go down?I can't wait to go see this other Dr. on the 21st.My foot is killing me.Not really so much the big toe area but the other toes.Especially the second one.Even my ankle hurts.I tried a pair of shoes that I just had worn for a little while about 2 weeks ago and I can't even get it on.I pushed my foot into it and my second toe stuck right up bad. You could see it through the leather. It is sooooo curled under.Last time I saw the Dr he said even with the fusion he did not know if the second toe would lie back down.So Im assuming that he will probably have to do a hammer toe surgery on that one too.I know I had asked you about an implant and you said you did not have one but did you have a graft?I'm wondering about that because my big toe is already shorter than my second toe from the first fusion. If they will have to do something with it like a graft because I know I will loose some more length from this fusion also?OK can you tell I'm really bored and getting nervous about this next step(foot)I'm just rambling on and on............

Sue,
I ramble too, I think it helps us so anytime you need to please, DO IT!!! Lets talk about the feet first. The swelling is about the same, my ankle swells more than my foot. If it is still doing it this weekend I will call him Monday but I want to wait. I was lucky enough not to have the bone braft. Yes, your toe will be shorter again...bring it up and see if they can do something about it while they are in there. I wouldn't want a graft but I wouldnt want my toe alot shorter either so I dont know what I would do. I know you will be happy when it is settled and you know whats going to happen, not that you want to do this again but at least once it is done you will feel better. I would do the second toe too if it is that bad, might as well get it all done at once! I went last night and bought a new pair of sneaks...sketchers of course...they had an extra wide that worked great. Too bad I will ruin them at work but I have to have a good pair. I am going to try to work tommorrow, I'll let ya know how that goes.
My hubby works at Disney, we get in for free and I could hook you up but we cant exchange our info......too bad, that stinks! You will enjoy it, there is ALOT to do here and at the parks. We went to the Dominican Republic last year and it was real poor too, I know what you mean about just feeling sad. It was bueatiful but very very dirty. I know they are poor but they just throw trash in piles everywhere, you should see the pics I have. Yeh, I was the only one on our tour bus taking pics of the trash...LOL...I just knew no one would believe me so I captured it on film.. he he.
Sounds like your new bf is pretty nice...sure hope you can take the trip with him & the kids in July, that would be great! When did your toes start curling? The last 2 toes on my foot do but they dont seem to bother me. I have noticed since the fusion that the second toe is up a bit but it never was before, I think maybe after the swelling goes down the toe will too. Again, it doesnt bother me. I hope they will fix that for you, it must be awful. OK...feel better...I rambled today too...LOL...the 21st will be here before you know it.

I have no idea what is up with that ankle of mine...I thought it was from the sprain at first but ya know, it didnt swell when I did it...I need to call the DR, my husband is almost ready to call himself. It is weird, I was going to post about tonite and there it was! It doesnt stay swollen all day but mostly it is. I still have no range of motion, it barely moves then just freezes. I have had it. I am sooooo over this crap. I will call, it is problebly no big deal but I am always telling you and others to just call, better safe than sorry......then I dont want to call for myself. LOL I will let you know what he says but I am sure I wont be able to even see him until next week, he is at his other office the rest of the week. So how are you? Boy if they don't do something with this toe it will be a stub, like you had said.It is already much shorter than my 2nd toe if the 2nd toe were to lay down properly. With the second toe curled under so much you really don't notice it that much.I'm having all kinds of different pains in my foot and leg.I think it is from the big toe not working properly and the rest of my toes/foot having to take over when I walk.(stress)
Please let me know how you make out with that foot!

Good morning MOM......LOL :D

I hadnt called yet because I woke up & it wasnt very big but after I read you lecture... ha ha...I called. It is normal for the ankle to swell after you begin to walk again BUT I have to elevate it all weekend & take an anti inflamitory. Because I had a severe sprain last Feb. she wants me to be cautious. I also told her about it freezing..she wanted to bring me in Tuesday to see him but I told her I would call Monday if it was still acting up. I am sure it will go away eventually...... and I will problebly go ahead and see him for peace of mind. I would think they would do a graft to keep some lenght in you toe, if it is too short wouldnt that affect your walking? HMMMM. I was having pain in my leg too after awhile, then it moved to my hip & back. All from walking wrong to avoid walking on the part that hurt. I asked my Dr about it and have had several DR tell me the same thing.....once your walking right again that should get better. It is funny we sit here and worry about each other, I am actually anxious for your second op too....I bet I get nervous the day of your surgery...LOL... My friend is a massage therapist, she is on her way over to work out my aches & pains....I cant wait. It is kinda torture though, she knows my trigger points and just digs right in!!! Ouch!!!
I hope your day goes well and your not in alot of pain, I know how hard it isto deal with everyday...

I'm glad you called.Hopefully it is only from the sprain and possibly from being used too much.So you have a friend that works out your aches and pains? That's nice, I had to quit going to PT for my back because I didn't think it was helping and at 15 bucks a visit it was killing me.I went and bought a new mattress set and it is coming tonight, I'm so excited :bouncing: Yeh right, I wish I could bounce around like that.LOL I hope it helps my back.I'm soooo looking forward to going to this new Dr on Monday, I want to get this over. My Dr. messed up my disability, he did not call in the extention in time before the last claim ran out so I got a BIG $14.00 check this week. I'm so P- offed.I don't know.... if I like this ortho. Dr. on Monday I might go with him for this next surgery. I like pods but that doesnt mean I would never use an ortho...I just never found one I liked..LOL... Alot of people prefer them though, it all comes down to who can do the job and who you feel you can trust. I hope the new mattress helps your back. We had to do that too for my hubbys and it helped him alot. Can you get your disability fixed??? Is it too late?? Monday will be here soon...finally, right? Man, he better give you some answers. I know I am suppose to be home all weekend elevating that ankle but my dear hubby made a HUGE mistake in the checkbook and we are hundreds less then we should be so back to work I went, I think mainly to P*** him off because he didnt want me to go. So the ankle is swelling again and my foot is killing me.........just as I figured it would. Will we ever be normal again???????????? Did I tell you I was getting a rowing machine??? I am really glad we hit it off so well, it is great being able to rant on & on and know the person I am ranting to really gets it...none of my friends have been through this and they just dont understand the frustration.

Listen to your hubby and go to the Dr's.Who cares if you are wrong? Like we said before better to be safe than sorry. After having that infection back in June I freak out about everthing. If I did not go to the Dr I could have lost my foot!
My appointment is at 10:30, I will let you know as soon as I get back.Even if you use the rower for a little bit, it feels good to do something for yourself doesn't it?I love just taking the dog out, even if it is to the end of the driveway.
It is suppose to snow here today,YUCK.Can't you put some of that sun in an envelope and mail it to me?LOL You know we would all feel alot better if it would only be a little nicer out.
Talk to you soon and call that Dr!!!!!!!!!

sue,

i would be happy to send you some sunshine...I know when it is nice like this I feel so much better. I get really depressed on cloudy rainy days...I use to live up north when I was young but I just couldnt do it again. Yes, it does feel good doing something...i would walk our dog but I dont have one...LOL. Hey, at least you make to the end of the driveway, thats progress! Ok....gotta run...I wish! But I will check in tommorrow to see what the scoop is. And I will call my DR. I dont have to work tommorrow, Tues. for a few hours...baby steps.. Speaking of which my little 18 month old niece lives next door and is learning to walk, its too funny because I kept telling her we would learn how to walk together and we are.....I trip and stumble as much as she does! So, yep today is the day at 10:30. My podiatrist just called at 7:15 to make sure that I'm set for this appointment and to tell me he will make contact with him after my appt.then call me. He is so wonderful.
Awww baby neice aren't they great? I have so many neices, nephews, great neices, great nephews now I have a great great neice that is almost 8 months. She is great I love her to death.I told her mom that she is about the only thing that brightens my day when I see her.I'm the youngest of 6 kids and my oldest sister is 65 years old.Imagine that one!LOL
I will get back to you later today, have a great day and let me know if you call your Dr.

Hey there!
It is almost one.......I am nervously awaiting you to tell me how it went......I will keep checking in all day. I cant believe how anxious I am... LOL
Yeh, my niece brightens my day too, she has to come over every evening after she gets home or she throws a fit. I dont know what she will do when they move! Wow, you have a sister thats 65??? That must be weird! I did call the DR. I didnt want too but my husband is getting on my nerves and I guess it is only fair. I go in the morning at 10.30. Ha! the magic number!!!!!
I have to tell some one this or I will burst......my son came over last night with his wife for dinner and afterwards they told us they were going to try to have a baby!!!!!
They had planned on waiting another couple of years, they have been married a year & a half now & are both in school as well as work full time........dont think they will have much time to do the "work" to get pg...ha ha...but I am excited even though I wish they would wait a bit longer. I had my son at 18 ( I was married to the X ) and I dont regret it although it was tough for a while...you know, your a single mom. Of course the X made an exit ASAP. OK.....just had to share with someone...they arent telling anyone else, not even her family...too good of a secret to keep!!! LOL
I will check back later. I hope it went well and you have some news & a plan. That was cool of your DR to call you...and rare.

Congrats Grandma! :bouncing:
Ok, this is the scoop....I went to the ortho. and I did not like him.He is partners with one of the other Dr's I saw before but did not use yet. This guy today said that I deffinately need the fusion but to wait a year or so and just keep taking tylenol or motrin. Then go to his partner because he doesn't do that many foot surgeries himself. He also told me to change my exercise from walking to a bike.Like OK so how am I suppose to do anything(walk, work, whatever) He also said that I should start wearing those old wooden sandals instead of sneaks.(don't want to mention the name.LOL)So my dr called me and I told him I did not like him and he disagreed with everything that this ortho said. I told him I think he had that attitude because he doesn't know my whole story. So I have another appt. tomorrow at 4:30 with my podiatrist.Anyway I don't know anymore than I did yesterday. My podiatrist said that he deffinately thinks I need the fusion NOW and that a year from now is not good.I just took my daughter to the mall for a birthday gift for my other daughter and my freakin foot is killing me. Iam so sick of this crap with drs, surgeries, opinions, pain no money, blah blah blah.
I hope you have better luck tomorrow than I did today.I will let you know how I make out tomorrow.

Finally......man I was getting nervous!!!!!!!
Well.......what a bust, huh? If you didnt like him thats a good reason to not use him. And why in the world wait a year if it has to be done???? So you can be crippled?????
Is the man crazy??????? AHHHHHH. Ok...so you see your pod tommorrow. Remind me again why he isnt doing the fusion??????? Or is he????? He seems like a good DR.
You cant go on like this Sue...it is going to take a toll big time. And not just on your foot, I mean emotionally. So let me know what happens with your pod, OK. I am sure mine will tell me what I alraedy know but I am going anyway. Yippie. Cant wait.
Hey...I am not officially a grandma yet! They still have to concieve but thanks...that sounded good! Grandma.....words I cant wait to hear from a little one.
And take tylenol????? Please, that didnt even take the edge off for me pre op...I suffered because my pod is so conservative with pain meds. I totally respect that, I just delt with the pain. You cant wait a flippin year!!!!! A trip to the mall sounds like a good thing...painful but good! When is your daughters b/day??? Talk to ya tomorrow..good luck.

Ok, so I had to go back and reread your last post about the baby.I missed the try part.Sorry......My podiatrist is going to do the fusion but wanted another opinion. He is the same one that has sent me for all of the extra opinions. He is very cautious. He told me again today"you know I'm always honest with you and I want the best for you"he is so great. He is also the one that called me from Florida when I was in the hospital at least once a day. He does a great job so I have confidence in him.I just want to get this over.Good luck tomorrow,

Sue.
Hang onto your Pod!!! I feel the same way about mine..good Dr's are hard to find. OK, I wasnt sure if the second op was doing it or what...thanks for clearing that up.
Well.....do you really want to hear how my visit went???? It stunk. I cried. I need chocolate but I ate it all yesterday........ :nono: So I might cry some more. We can start the injectons to the tumor in a month or so to try to disslove it. The ankle is swollen partly from the foot & partly because I aggrivated the sprain...just as I thought, no big deal. BUT I am glad I listened to ny hubby and went because when he tried to move my ankle up it froze on him too......it moves everyway but up. I have 2 more weeks to try myself then its off to pay for the torture of PT. If that doesnt work I have to have surgery to lengthen the tendon. Oh, it gets better ( or worse)
He took an xray to check the fusion while I was there anyway and not only is the tendon frozen but it starting to cause my ankle to be deformed. YUP. Can you believe this?????? I never killed a puppy or pushed old ladies...why is this happening?????? At this point we can reverse it but if we cant get the ankle to move with or without surgery I will end up crippled. I will not let that happen!!!!! BUT I do have good news.....LOL.......I am done with my post op care for the fusion. The wound has healed enough I can shower again and begin to get my life back. :bouncing: He did say it would take me months because I have had so much surgery & have alot of scar tissue so not to be discouraged if going to the store wears me out or I cant go to work...I guess all in good time. So thats my news. I feel bad venting on you when you are facing that fusion but I know you understand how I feel...it just doesnt end anymore.......waiting for your news.....hope it is good...
Thanks Sue,

I dont drink either...if I did with my luck I would tie one on then fall and break my darn leg.....my left one of course! LOL. Keep me up to date & let me know when you have the date set for sure. I want to try and get out and get as much exercise by my next surgery.I will tolerate the pain and enjoy myself as much as I can because it is going to be a looooooong spring.Too bad we don't live around each other or we could do this together and walk together. I know you arent looking forward to having it done but.........and I hope I am done too, I cant even think about having more surgery right now, I swear that all I have done the last 20 years...Well I am doing the new stretches and had alot of pain in the middle of the night, i hope that was a good sign. I have decided that if I have made no progress by monday that I will give in and go to PT. Its just a money thing, you know how that is! But I would rather be broke a bit longer and not have surgery...sounds like a good trade off to me. Lucky you.......the sun is out up there!!! Ahh, I was wrong, it is freezin and cloudy here today.
Hammertoe? When I had that type of surgery on my left foot he basically removed the joint and put a removable pin with a little colored ball on the end. That stuck out the tip of my toe. That was when I had the infection an they had to remove the pin after only like 4 days. Now I have this funky looking toe.OMG you should have seen the toe after they removed the pin(too early)it was all floppy like a dead fish.LOL It flopped up and down when I walked cause there was no joint. Now it is as stiff as a board and I have a huge lump at the base of the toe.So thats what they do for a hammertoe but the pin is suppose to stay in for 4-6 weeks.
Keep exercising that foot/toe.
Talk to you soon,
Sue

Hi Dawn and Sue.....I'm sorry to hear you both are still having problems. Sue, I also had a lump on the base of my 2nd toe from a previous hammertoe surgery last May. The OS told me that the bone had grown together. There is suppose to be fluid between the 2 bones where they removed the joint. So basically I was walking on the bone. I had corrected surgery on 2/15. I had a pin sticking out of my toe and it was removed last week. The OS told me it would be 6 to 8 weeks before the toe (hopefully) would take its correct position. I'm still wearing the ugly blue surgical shoe but the toe feels much better than before. I hope this will be the end of it as it has been almost a year since the bunion/hammertoe surgery.

I laughed at what you said in the above post......."they are never touching me again...Nope no way no how" OK, do you know how many times I have said that??????? LOL!!!!! Actually I said it just yesterday...LOL. I feel ya on that one my friend! Hammer toe surgery sounds pretty gross...I guess it is all gross though, I try not to think of what they actually do. Doing my stretches and my hubby thinks it moved a tiny bit more tonite, I'll take it! He is able to push from the ball of my foot now putting some pressure on the fused joint.....it feels weird but not really that painful. My ankle & calf hurt like heck now...all the movement I guess. Take care & STAY POSITIVE!!!!! Its gonna go great and your gonna heal fantastic!!!!!

The Nurse called this morning the surgery is for sure on the 4th.She said the hospital would call for the exact time but she said she has me down for 9-930.
That's great that you are making progress :) I can't wait until I have to start PT which Im sure I will sooner or later. I stopped going for my back hoping that the new bed would help. But I was told last night by my friend it takes at least 45 nights for you to adjust to the new mattress.
I was reading one of your other posts about the compression sock. When I had my infection and had severe swelling I had to buy 2 pairs. The first pair was not tight enough so I had to go fork out another 40 bucks on a different pair. They are really hard to get on but well worth it.You should give it a try.
I hope your feeling well today and aren't working too hard.

Well its official then.......and soon too, huh? Are you still nervous? You know it is going to be a good thing. And at least you are prepared for the boredom, I swear that is the hardest part. yeh, I may go ahead and get the compresson sock...it stays swollen, I just hate them. I have made a little progress. I am still nervous that they will have to do the surgery but am trying so hard to stay focused and positive like I tell everyone else too. I have been kinda depressed this last week though.....it will pass though. I took my first shower today and hated every minute of it. I cannot stand barefoot at all and it hurt. Think I will just continue with baths for a while longer. LOL !! I took a step and put my weight on the ball of my foot today..OMG did it feel wierd! I can sure tell that toe is up then!!! I didnt go to work again. I am going back monday for sure, I cant put it off any longer. I read on another post they are posting your job.......will you still get your disability??? Will you be able to back to the same company? I sure hope so. I give you props Sue...going what you are going through being a single mom....... you deserve a standing ovation!!!! You may not have to go to PT...what is your DR thinking? Do you want to go? If your insurance will pay it I would go for it, thats the only reason I am trying it at home first. Still no sun here.......how about up there???

My job?I will still be with the same company just a different position, different store who knows , but they can't take away my actual job.If that makes sense?

Snow. YUK!!! At least I am warm! I am at 15* ...right on target. To look at it is no different, you cant really tell. It is still swollen but I can tell it is off the ground and when I have shoes on. I dont think I will wear heels for a while, I dont really like them anyway. I just gave my sister in law most of my shoes...too pointy...to much heal...things between the toes...I have 3 pair left other than my sneaks. Bummer! Well at least you will have some kind of job to go back to, maybe it will be better! I know I shouldnt rush going back to work but it has been 11 weeks....I need to go back, money is running out quickly now. I think I am just being too paraniod about hurting myself. Glad you all had a good Easter! The angle of the toe is the big question...you pretty much know what to ask, right? Recovery time, cast or boot...time NWB, total NWB or partial w/crutches...what kinda of hardware if any or the pins...I think you have discussed almost everything with him already. Make sure he gives you some good pain meds, you might need them having surgery again so soon. I thought I was making progress but it is stuck again, I am so darn frustrated !! this is so stupid and uncalled for, I just dont get it. It is better than last week at least but Sue I am just so tired of something always being wrong. You can relate to that. Isn't it amazing! I just can't believe how some of the people on these boards do so well(lucky them) and some of us have all these problems.LOL Do you really think it might be our Dr's or are we just unlucky? If anything will fail or if there is bad luck I will find it.When I had my hysterectomy they had done a previous procedure to prevent having to do the surgery. When that procedure failed they then had to do the hyster. My Dr said I was the 2nd patient in his career that this had happened to.And he is almost ready to retire.(I think)LOL I feel like someone else had said on these boards that we open a can of worms. If I had to start all over again I would have lived with the bunions and been able to enjoy life longer, with the pain of the bunions.I'm really hoping that when this surgery is over things will finally turn back to somewhat normal.Seeing that this is the last thing that they can do to try and correct my foot. I'm really hoping and praying for you that you don't need another surgery too.I am sooooo NOT looking forward to this surgery. Whatever happens,we are together in this.Iwill be there for you and I would never get rid of my best foot buddy.LOL

I think it is us. The bad news bears! LOL I have been blessed with good DR...well one pod was a quack as I found out but with 5 surgeries I had 3 pods...2 good, 1 quack. Its like if something can go wrong, it usually does! A BIG can of worms, thats what we opened!!!! I know people that read our post must think OMG...what have I done?? You sound so much like me...astounding your DR's...giving them "carreer" highlights! LOL IF I told you the surgeries & story of my hyst. you would think I was telling you a story!!! My body grows things...cyst, tumors...its what I do...I still have a tumor on my adrenal gland that just hangs out...cant take it out because I am not sick from it so thats fine by me..... I think this surgery will change things for you. Its the last resort, thats the only reason we agreed, right? Sue, I sometimes breakdown and just cry because I regret doing this...I regret the first surgery...I had no chioce in any of them though, I would be crippled by now. BUT even though I have my little regret moments and even though I have developed these other problems I DO NOT REGRET THE FUSION. Yup, sounds like I am contradicting myself there but...
when I walk now, even though it is still hard and still very uncomfortable, it is SOOOOO much better than before. I do not have all the pain I had before the fusion. I remind myself of that during my "pity parties". I know already that I am going to be able to do things I couldnt before...like walk with no pain!!! Like sleep all night and not be awaken by pain...that is already the case...yippie!!! I can walk around the house in my slippers now too..now that my friend is progress!!!!! Ha Ha! Sorry this is so long, I just want to encourage you and remind you that you are doing the right thing...as much as it stinks to have to go through it. Thats Ok...its hard to remember who had what done when we read so many post!!!
No, i had a nerve block with IV sedation. They gave me versed(memory blocker) and pain meds in my IV so I took a nice nap but woke really easy and was not groggy or anything. I hate being put "under". I actually was awake for one surgery...my first one. But on the second my Dr told me I would be awake but I napped...he gave me more drugs because he said I talked too much the 1st time! What are you having? Do you know yet???

I go tomorrow at 10 and Im sure he will tell me.I have had the MAC and also just local.I read other peoples post about versed is that the same as MAC? Someone else was saying that with the versed they were violent?I'm a little confused but i will find out tomorrow,

sue,
someone did say that versed made her daughter violent......just a rare bad reaction I am sure. My stepmom does this for a living...the versed gives you temp. amnesia so you cant remember anything, that is why they use it. Then they use different pain meds...depending on who is doing it...and how long you need to be asleep. You have a say so in it...if you want to be out tell him, if you like to be altittle more alert, tell him. I sure did...no way did I want to be under a general for foor surgery but I didnt want to be awake this time either........let me know how it goes in the morning. :)

I am not sure..versed would be one of the drugs they give you ...they give you 2 or 3 different things, i never remember the names.....LOL let me do a quick search......

Sue. Mac means "monitored anesthesia care" Versed is as I said just one of the drugs they use to relax you, stop anxiety & temp. block your memory.
you can do a search and get it all explained.....there is alot to it.

Hi,
Well I just got back from the Dr's and I asked some questions. Then got home and remembered some other things that I wanted to ask him.LOL So I called him when I got home so that I didn't forget. He must think I'm crazy. He said my surgery would be done under gereral something about the turniket(sp)and length of time I guess? He also said he was going to angle it at 10 degrees.Does this all sound about normal? Also said that more than likely he would cast it.So now it is just a waiting period and worrying. So how are guys doing today?
Sue

03-29-2005, 12:47 PM
Sue,
Don't worry!!!!! I hate general!!!!! I am sure he has a reason though. My fusion only took about an hour, but then they have to do your hammer toe too... My angle was 15*. So I could wear a bit of a heal, half an inch I think. With a 10* you will just have to wear lower heels, thats all. I am sure he chose the angle thats best for you, with that other joint being fused may have something to do with it. A cast after is normal too.....it will protect your foot!!! Everything is gonna work out well....
I have noticed a big change the last few days with my foot......not as much swelling, not in alot of pain, I actually took a real step yesterday!! I am going back to work tommorrow...for sure...I cant put it off any longer. Try not to think about the surgery too much........

Did you go to work today? If so I hope you did not overdo it :nono:
I'm so excited it is supoose to be 60* today I was out waiting with my son for the bus at 8:30 with only sweats on and it was awesome.I want to enjoy this nice weather today before it rains again.Did you get alot of rain? Plus you know I will be stuck inside for ?????????????????long after next week.My boyfriend actually moved my couch in front of the window so that I can look outside next week. Not sure if that's a good or bad idea.LOL
That is so great that your foot is starting to co-operate for you.Just imagine by the summer hopefully we will be good to go!!!!!!!Hope that's not wishfull thinking.Doesn't hurt to hope and wish.

Sue,
I did go to work today. I lasted a whopping 3 hours and that included 2 sit down breaks!!!! But I am back and I am not going to overdo it...at least I can sit when I need to. My son works with me and he was very bossy today..mom he says...you know you can sit more than 5 minutes!!! Mom, dont you think its time to go home???
It was nice...I admit it. :D
Is it suppose to stay warm??? We did have alot of rain over the weekend...sunny and warm today though...80*. At least you have some decent weather to enjoy for a day or 2. And it might be nice to look out the window, I spent alot of time in a recliner we have by the window because at least I could see outside and feel like I was still part of the world...the only part was when it was cold and we had a draft.......boy that made my foot hurt!!! I've been reading some post and these ladies are not needing pain meds, back to work soon...I am happy for them but man do I feel like a big ol whimp!!!! I am 12 weeks tomorrow and just now trying to really go back to work and still need something for pain most evenings. The pain is much better though...And my ankle is doing real good, thank God!!!!! I think I will get my ROM back without the surgery to lengthen that tendon...I am holding onto that!!! I feel bad reporting my good news knowing you have to have that fusion next week. But I want to encourage you as well.......by the end of summer we will both be walking around normal again......hopefully in cute sandles!!! LOL I cant wait to get out of these sneakers!!!!! :bouncing:

Don't !!!!!!!!you feel like a whimp! Remember everyone is different and you and I have had sooooo/tooooo many surgeries on our poor little feet.
You are so lucky to be working with family that understands you.At least you made it for a few hours it is better than nothing. When I go back I have to go back full time 8-9 hours a day. There is no light duty, you have to be 100% to go back. That's one of the reasons I have to stay out so long each time.Ya know after 26 1/2 years you think they could do something here!
Take it easy and keep working that ankle.(gentley)

glad you are having some more sunny days and can get out. Also happy to hear you have a fun weekend planned...thats just what you need. Is you b/f taking you to and from the hostital??? Hey, do you still have that thing from the casino? Maybe you will win!!! LOL...wouldnt that be a hoot!!!! I know I shouldnt feel like a whimp. I use to bounce back quick too but not anymore...this one kicked my butt! I am lucky with work, I made it 3 hours today too. Last time I had foot surgery I was managing a Convience store....so i know how hard it will be for you to go back. You would think they could find something you could do...have you really been there 26 years or did I misunderstand that??? Scars...hmmm...too many. LOL 6. I know, 5 surgeries...6 scars...let me explain....surgery # 2 was done by DR Quack. He decided to open my foot completely from top to bottom...oh yeh...he went all the way through...I was SHOCKED!. So I have 1 on the side I cant see, I on the bottom I cant see and 4 on the top...all in the same place, just bigger and longer each time. And real ugly now because of the wound. BUT I will wear sandles anyway because it is just too hot here for sneaks most of the time. I think it will fade in a few years...I hope! My foot is improving each day...it is so weird because I wake up and it doesnt hurt....NO PAIN...that hasnt happened in years.......I flt like something was wrong then I realised what it was. I cant wait until you have the same thing happen...and you will. It is very weird when all I have known for years is foot pain. Now, to go all day without it hurting...soon. I am sick as a dog...flu, something...I feel horrible. Gonna take a nap......talk to you soon.

Sue,
I know you are a nervous wreck......you must remain calm. Yeh, right!!! I would be nervous too. Hey, did you find out if you were having a bone graft or not??? I was looking at my toes last night and it is now 1/8 of an inch shorter...I didnt actually measure it but that seems about right so that made me wonder about the bone graft... Man, at least all my surgery was on just one foot! He has mentioned doing surgery on my other foot for my PF but I dont think I want to go there...I am afraid that it will end up like my other one, continual surgeries. Well, DR Quack was in the office I was going to, my pod left the practice near the end of my treatment and quack took over all his patients. We had reached the end of conservative treatments and surgery was next.....i had no idea then he would mess me up so bad...not only did he open me up like a christmas turkey he left bone fragments in my foot that had to be removed later by my" real pod"...I knew after 6 months of severe pain and swelling someting was wrong. I kept going to him asking him why it wasnt healing and his answer was...here , take these (oxycontin) and get over it. HELLO. I didnt take the drugs, didnt want more drugs, just an answer. Went to my reg pod that was now back on my insurance and he fixed me. And by the way, Quack no longer practices here...arent you sorry you ask me things? I never seem to give a short answer! LOL.
Well, I have a bad viral infection....I didnt go to work today...foot feeling great though, just my luck!!!! It is so nice I want to go outside, maybe get some sun. Hope you have a sunny day too and try not to stress........sorry this is so long, I talk to much! LOL

Sue,
I am happy to hear your home and resting. I read your other post about your surgery...the ankle block is so you cant feel anything in your foot. I had IV sedation so I had a block...couldnt feel my foot for almost 24 hours. It hurt when it wore off though...LOL Make sure you keep ahead on those meds these next few days. i know you will, you know the routine. I wonder why he said no ice. I iced mine but it actually burned so I quit doing it, it felt better without it to me even though it would swell. Ask him about it when he calls if you remember. Thanks for asking about how I am feeling but lets focus on YOU right now, OK? I'm fine...no worries...LOL. Keep me posted on how you are when you feel up to it. i will check back to see how the Dr went. Eat something when you take that hydro. It will upset your stomach at first. I still am taking it when I need to and I eat a granola bar or something first, it seems to help a bit. I worked a few hours today. My parents took the week off so I didnt have to work at all but I wanted to. tommorrow I am going shopping with a friend... Foor is doing better. I have been able to walk barefoot a little. and I have been putting weight on the fusion site. It feels weird but it doesnt hurt. Still sick but it is letting up and the ankle is better but my hubby hurt his hand and hasnt been able to help me ny massage ot strechiing it at his angle so it is alittle stiff again. My scar is about 2 1/2 inches now. and wide where the wound was........my friend gave me some lavender & myrh essential oil...the pure kind and it seems to be fading the scar already. Ok, I went to the Dr last night.Of course he was a half hour late and I had taken only one pain pill at 3 and he did not get there until 6:15.After removing the bandages and taking the xray my boyfriend decided to ask him if my 2nd toe was going to ever straighten out?So the @&*%$#@ Dr says yes see.............bends the toe where the joint was, in half.To show him that it does move up.(Should have loaded up on the drugs).LOL I want to tell you I almost punched him.LOLIt is so weird to have a toe with no joint it just is like a dead fish.(Floppy) So anyways he says the foot is looking good but quite swollen.I have to go back Sat for a cast.Oh....and you should see how short my toe is.My boyfriend says thank god this is the last thing that he can possibly do because you have no bones left in your foot.I have a stub.Doc said he took out(bone) as little as possible.
Beautiful day out today.might try and set on the patio or porch for a little while.
I hope you and your hubby are feeling better.

Sue,

Glad to hear that the surgery seemed to go well. How long do you have to wear the cast for? My doctor hasn't said anything about a cast - do most people have one after a fusion? I know I won't be able to bear weight for six weeks but I guess I hadn't thought about what would be on my foot. How would you compare the pain from this surgery with the previous ones? I have all sorts of questions - sorry about that. We seem to have had some similar foot problems and I'm kind of using you as my guide through this :)

My surgery was supposed to be yesterday but my doctor has the flu. Although I 'm glad he's not operating on my while he's sick, I have to admit that I just want this over with. It's now been pushed back to the 21st. He's planning on giving me Dilaudid for the first few days and then cutting back to Vicodin for a while.

It amazes me that they grab, pull, squeeze and push on out poor feet and than smile...................what's up with DR's??? LOL! Did he say how long you would be in your cast? I didn't have one because of the wound but I was glad. the splint was bad enough. So your toe is a stub??? And the hammertoe, is that the floppy one? that has to be weird!!! did you make it out on the patio today? I went to the mall, shopping. I held up pretty well. The walking feels good I just wish I wasnt still limping but I havent gotten the hang of the whole stiff toe thing and it feels so strange taking steps...I am afraid I will break it or something...I wonder if you will find it as weird as I do. Its funny though because it doesnt bother me that it doesnt move unless I am walking. I suppose I will get use to it though. Hubby and I are doing fine...thanks for asking! i am glad you are feeling OK. i posted about the constipation just now. Try slimfast. It really worked for me!!! LOL!!! I hope the good news is encouraging for you. You will see them too, the good changes I mean. Its all going to be fine. I know the whole stub toe is aggrivating but when you walk without pain it may not bother you so bad. I measured my scar again, its 3 inches, not 2 1/2. But the 1/2 inch I didnt measure the first time is faded from before. It looks pretty bad in sandles but I dont care, I can walk!!! And it will fade in time. Glad you got outside today. Fresh air is the best!!! It has been awesome down here lately! Did you see on one of the other post that I had measured my toe and it is 3/4 in shorter than my second toe. That's with taking out some of the bone on the second one.I dont know how much shorter it is than the left big toe.Should be interesting to see after he takes the cast off.

you actually mean that it is 3/4 inches shorter????? I did read that. You have to measure it again when you have the cast off and the swelling goes down.............OMG no wonder you are freaking out about it!!!!!!!!!!! mine isnt near that bad...I measured it on my cutting mat, I couldnt find a ruler..LOL. Maybe 1/4 of an inch if that...Man, that stinks Sue. I hope it isnt really that bad once you heal...mine looked shorter when it was swollen...not that it it is more normal it doesnt look as bad...I sure hope the same hold true for you! BUT as long as the pain is gone...maybe it wont seem as bad then!!!!!!!

I'm doing ok not too much pain in the foot. But I can deffinetely tell if I have been up too long.If I stay completely off my feet it is great. All I do is get up to go pee and try to get a drink or eat dinner.Going to try to venture out to the bank today.I need to see what real life is all about.Getting very bored.I'm affraid to go outside by myself.Kids have next week off and it is suppose to be in the 70s.So my daughter can help me out. Can't wait, maybe I can catch some rays  How are you feeling being back at work? Still sore?

Sue,
I am glad you are doing well. It would be great if you could get outside.........the sun can do wonders! I have been bad...going to the tanning salon so I dont fry myself on the cruise! I just dont have time to lay out, you would think a Fl girl would be tan but I am afraid of wrinkles...I just turned 40 and I have 2...guess it is paying off! BUT I do fake bake before I head to the Caribbean...and yes, I use sunscreen. and I am leaving a sock on the top half of my foot, I went to the beach once after surgery and fried my poor swollen foot so bad I will not make that mistake again! Your brave going to the bank. My hubby kept me prisoner! He would take me out but never let me go alone for the 1st 2 months. Work is great. Hard but great! I am able to do more everytime I go. My son made me leave today though because I over did it Tuesday and stayed home yesterday. He actually yelled at me! He told me I yelled at him for 21 years now and it was his turn so be quiet and sit down!!!!! LOL. then he made me leave so I snuck to the mall............hey, big sale at Pennys today!!! So I am good today...so much better then even last week! Dont get to bored, I swear that is the worst part! I find it hard to stay still now that I can move...but sometimes we still have to rest. Well, I talk to much so chat later!!!!!!!!

Dawn,
Off to the Dr. today to have this cast changed and stitches out.(4:00)I can't wait to see what the foot looks like.My bf says my toes look strange(purple and swollen).I don't know if it is just from the surgery or what. But we will see tonight.

Did you ever think you would be so happy to go back to work?LOL I know that's the way I was back in Sept. after being out all summer. In all reality when would you say I should be able to go back to work.I'm not sure what I'm going to be doing yet but I know I will be on my feet from 8-5.I would like to try and go back doing what I was doing before surgery if they give me my job back. But I know and understand that I won't be able to do the bending, climbing, tippee toes, kneeling and squating like before. Unless I figure out a new way to do that stuff. I'm really affraid of messing my foot up, if that is possible????

As you can see from some of the posts on here that most of us are getting annoyed at being stuck inside.I'm taking it easy because I did make some mistakes by venturing out and trying to do some human things.LOL So I said no more, I'm not taking any more chances. It really scared the crap out of me.So I will sit in this house until I rot.LOL
You are soooo lucky to work for family.I know you are feeling alot better but take it easy. Any news of a baby yet?

Let me know later what your foot looks like....I will check in tonite. I stayed home today...i worked 5 days in a row and my foor is screaming at me for rest!!!!!!!! It is sooooooooooooooo hard being stuck at home. I swear I lost part of my mind!!! LOL I know I have to stay home today and rest but I want to go somewhere really bad...I am not though...I will tough it out! My toes was really purple and red and blue. and really swollen, it looked crazy and warped! It look normal now thank God! Sue, honestly, I would say at least another month and a half before working. you are 2 weeks, right? I didnt try until 10 weeks. He cleared me then I think but I had a hard time, remember? I still cant be there more than 5 hours and i have the luxery of being able to rest. Maybe its just the work I do, its hard but so is being on your feet for 8 hours at a time. I have modified my tippie toe stand and can dio it now. Its weird but I do it. I can bend with some limits but am working on that too and I can squat, getting up is still a challange. I cant kneel yet and havent tried because I am afraid I will "snap" that fused joint. I really dont think I can because of the screws but I am still afarid of doing it. I think over time we will get over that fear. Oh yeh, I got on the ladder at work to paint!!! Scared the crap out of me and I was careful but I did it!!!!!!!!! amazingly enough we will learn how to do almost everything with our fused toe, it may take modification and creative planning but it can be done. I feel so much better Sue, I am so glad I did this! I still have days when I am aggrivated with the swelling or pain or the fact that I STILL cant walk in sandles but I am still better than I was before. Can you tell I am bored at home!!!!! He he!!!
Still no baby news...she stopped taking the pill so when it happens it happens...believe me, I will let you know!!!!! Well, I am off to the tanning salon...my only outing today, I swear! I could go to the pool but I already paid and I hate wasting my money...LOL! I'll check in later! Try to find out when you can walk again.........and is he gonna take an X ray??????????

Message my foot and ankle in the water. He says that if he put the cast right back on I might develop problems with my ankle and calf.So I have to be super careful and try not to bump or put weight on it until Thur. then he is putting another cast on.Hey, at least I get to shave my leg :D .

Hi Everyone!
Today has to be a better day--yesterday was awful!!!! I got my cast changed yesterday--no colors available. The "cast man" told me some stories about problems he has encountered over the years with colored casts. The worst was a teenage who got a blue cast and was shot two days later on the streets of San Jose CA, because someone mistook it for a gang color. I'll stick with my boring cream color.

I also got my stitches out. Some were very tight and there was more pulling going on than I liked. Right afterward they itched so much. My cast was rubbing a bit and I have a few marks. The doc brought me some anti itch cream for my leg and while I was waiting to be recasted I rubbed and massaged this wonderful cream into my leg--absolute heaven!!! I didn't get an x-ray this time and tried to talk the doc out of a cast because its driving me nuts--the Cast Blast does work though and I use it almost every day. The doc told me when I get x-rayed in two weeks, he may have to cast me again depending on how much bone growth I have on my mid-foot cut. He went on to tell me if I don't have sufficient bone growth, I risk injuring the area and having problems the rest of my life. When I pushed him for stats, he told me 50:50. Since I have osteoporosis, my chances may be less than 50. Sometimes I get waves of claustraphobia in my cast. Stupid I know but I from listening to you veterans I know enough to put up and shut up to protect my foot.

I am SO jealous you got to shave your leg Sue. I feel like a bush lady and having the doc see my hairy leg is embarassing. Be really careful without your cast though.

Here's my sad story from yesterday. On my way back from the doc, I had to go to the bank. I got my roll-a-bout of out the car and positioned it. Then I grabbed my purse and turned to get out. Well, I must have been on a slight hill because my scooter was already about two car lengths away from me. I tried to hop after it but it was gaining speed and a car was coming around a blind corner and going to hit it. I was waving my arms and trying to not put my nwb foot on the ground. The scooter finally stopped after it hit the bumper of a car about 10 car lengths or more from me. I was getting on my hands and knees to crawl after it on the verge of tears when the two ladies in the car told me to sit on the curb, parked their car and went to go get my scooter. I needed some angels at that moment but I was so embarassed. I now put the brake on my scooter!!! I cried all the way home. My foot was throbbing all evening. Today I'm suppose to be working but having trouble logging on from home. Oh, and I also discovered I've lost my cell phone yesterday. This just has to be a better day..... Why do things have to be so hard....

I'm sorry you had such a terrible day.Hopefully today will be better.I have to tell you what happened to me last week, somewhat the same.Maybe you wont feel as bad.Well.........I have a pekingese(sp) puppy (almost 1 yr old) And he got out the front door.He is a good puppy but does not listen to COME or STAY and off the porch he went, down the driveway and almost into the street.Of course no one was in sight to help. So I got off the porch somehow(dont remember how) and started crawling on my knees to get him.Thank god for once, my son left a toy on the front lawn and I reached it and threw it towards the door and caught the dumb dog. Brought him inside and boy let me tell you I was shaking and sore.We all have angels above us when we need them.Again I hope you are feeling better today,

Sue,

I'm so glad you caught your puppy--how graceful it was doesn't matter. Its amazing what we do when there are no other resources available to help. I do cat rescue and had a new one freak out yesterday, destroy my screen and is now in my back yard. Poor guy is so scared and I'm worried about him. I've had my kids help me set traps and hope I can catch him. Poor cat's owner died and the executor of the estate threw him and his brother in the streets. He was full of abscesses from being attacked. We trapped him once and now I hope I can get him again. The window was only open about 3 inches and I have no idea how he got through it since he is full grown. At least dogs will sometimes come when you call them. My favorite dog as a kid was a dauschund & pekenese mix. He looked very funny with his pek face and tail and doxie body and legs but he was the best dog ever. I'm a real animal lover and grew up on a farm as a kid in Illinois.

Take care everyone and thanks so much for your support--you will never know how much it means to me!!

HI Linda,
I hope you are having a good day.Since you are an animal lover I have to share this with you.I live in NY not in the country but not city either.Very quiet neighborhood. The other day my bf was raking and came across a nest of 4 wild baby bunnies in the ground. So we watched them everyday to make sure they were ok and the mother was taking care of them. Well last night I noticed that the hole they were in was no longer a hole, they were laying on the grass so I tried to cover then with leaves.I dont know what happened, I have moles so I think they may have disturbed the nest.I kept the dog away from the nest.Well unfortunately this morning I found them dead.It got cold here and rained last night. So I think maybe they were too cold????I don't know....So anyway I got up this morning and looked out the window and there was a wild turkey in my yard pacing back and forth trying to get out. As soon as I let the dog out he instantly knew how to get out.LOL He flew away. I just find it funny that all these animals are venturing into my yard.
Take care and have a great day,

Sue, That's too bad about the bunnies! A wild turkey--that is cool. All I have is a skunk I call Peppy la pew. I feed a homeless cat somebody abandoned and the skunk eats too at night.

Talk about attitude--I'm getting it too and tired of it. If I could do some of the things I ask for help with, I'd do them. Its amazing how I've waited on my kids hand and foot and when I ask for help its too much!

I'm doing OK.My Dr. cancelled my appt. because his mom was admitted in the hospital and he had to go to Kingston after normal day at work.I was bumming because I had hopes of getting out for a bite to eat.I called him back and asked if I could put my cam walker on with my crutches and go?He said NO NO NO just stay put and wait until you get your cast!If you loosen anything we will have to do it all over again! So my bf ordered chinese and we ate here.I have my appt for tonight.I will get back to you later.

I hope the feeling you are experiencing is nothing to be worried about. If it continues you should probably contact the Dr.It is getting to close to your cruise to have anything go wrong for you.

Aren't the attitudes great. My poor daughter(15) O I say poor now but I do feel sorry for her at times because she is doing so much for me.But ya know the bf he thinks she is not doing enough and I can't get it through his head that she is a 15yr old girl and has other priorities. So it's a battle between him and her.LOL Like Linda said if I could do it I would do it myself, Lord knows I do it other times.I just can't wait to be able to help myself, I think that is the most frustrating for me.
Have a great day everyone :) :) :)

I have had to wear many CAM walkers and Air Casts and boots of all sorts during the past year and a half due to chronic ankle sprains and instability. The Air Cast boot is a CAM walker. It is gray and has a hard plastic shell, unlike other CAM walkers and boots. It also has several air chambers which can be inflated or deflated with a little bulb like thing that comes with it. It is made by Air Cast, which also makes the smaller stirrup ankle braces, which I am sure you have seen before. I had ligament reconstruction surgery March 31 and am supposed to get my cast off Wed. and go back to my Air Cast boot. I am looking forward to being able to wash and shave my leg! The Air Cast boot is very comfortable, as you are able to inflate it to your own comfort.

Hope this helps!

Thank you Megan. The Air Cast sounds wonderful compared to the regular cast. This hairy leg is gross and I want to rub my leg and foot so badly.

My cam walker is Black and has metal bars on the sides with velcro and a steel or metal base and does not allow you to walk on your toes, just your heel so that you are basically partial weight bearing. So it must be that there are different types of cam walkers. Which ever it is, it has got to be better than these casts! I can't wait to be able to walk with two feet :D

You will be out of that cast before you know it...it seems like forever doesnt it??? I cant wait till you are walking again.....i know you cant either! Well, it seems like overnight...actually it was overnight...my foot just got better. It has been 3 days now and it has only swollen alittle and the pain is almost completely gone...even after working all day. It bothers me a bit in the evening after work but nothing like it has been. So see what you have to look forward to? Life without PAIN. Its a beautiful thing!!!!! I am beat...will check in tomorrow to see how you are!

Dawn,
I'm ok but can't wait to get rid of the cast.I don't really have much pain now with the cast still on.I can't wait to see how much smaller my calf is going to be.It is so amazing that you body can shrink up so fast.My son(10yr) who is a little overweight says "you mean if I don't do anything my legs will get smaller?"He is so funny :D
The weather is SOOOOOOO cold here after having a few days of 70*and 80* weather. It has only been in the 50s low 60s and 40s at night.Oh, we are looking into a cruise with the kids.Do you know if you have to pay full price for kids? I can't wait...Maybe in Dec. or Jan.
Good to see you are keeping busy.Be careful and talk to you soon,

Sue,
soon...the cast will be gone!!! it will feel great! I bet your calf is nothinf...mine was and I only had the splint. Your son is funny! I thought maybe a body cast would be nice.....LOL!!! with my luck all the fat would come back double!!!
YEAH>>>>>>>>> your going to cruise!!!! As long as your kids are in the same cabin you will only pay like 500 more per person...2 full price fairs then 500 or less...depending on the cruise line,,,for each additional person in the cabin. If you get them thier own I think it is full price but I am not 100% sure about that. Keep me posted on that...you will have a well deserved break! Off to work.hope it is a bit warmer for you!

Sue--I have 3 kids and the 4 of us always shared a room. It was a bit cozy but dlh is correct in the 3rd and 4th person go really cheap. I remember it being 350-450 depending on where we were going. We have cruised lots of places and the kids loved it. As they became teens, they were given the option of doing shore excersions or not. They soon realized they wouldn't see much if they didn't go, but it saved me some $$$. When I was married, we had to have 2 rooms because of 5 people and that cost a lot because you pay full fare for 2 people per room. My kids are almost grown, so I will have to find someone else to cruise with or go on my own. Where are you thinking of going? My favorites are Alaska, the Baltic, Canada/New England and Southern Carribean. I've done Mexico but didn't see much because we were chased by a Hurricane and only went to Ensanada. Try being in a small cabin for 6 days with 3 kids and never getting off the ship!!!

I want my cast off and the pin out sigh..... I know the pin removal will hurt a lot but I've been talking to myself saying its just like childbirth--it has to come out no matter how much it hurts...... I think I'm losing it!

Sue,
came home to change between jobs and thought I would go tan.........I was in a hurry and when I came out I stepped off the curb like a normal person...BIG MISTAKE!!!!!!! I thought I was gonna puke! Of course my fused toe ended on the ledge!!!!! hurts now and is swelling just a bit.....so take this as a warning...................watch those curbs even when your foot starts to feel better.........dont think I broke it or anything but it really smarts!!! OK.........thanks for the quick vent....gotta go to the house from hell now!!! LOL
