My husband (32) has been taking lipitor for about 3 weeks now. He was in Lovastatin first but due to some liver "abnormality"(???) he got switched to lipitor. 2 Days ago he started seeing bright red blood in his stool and the toilet paper. We're wondering now if this has anything to do with the medication? Aside from his high (genetic) cholesterol, he was fine. No abdominal pain etc. He made a Dr.'s appt tom but we've just been antsy about it...I just thought I'd get some opinions, stories etc. from anyone else out there who might have gone or is going thru this. Personally, I want him to stop taking any Statin medication. I just don't know what might be a "natural" alternative?
Thanks! Just found this site today and must say it has been very "educational" :)

I've been taking Liptor for more than 10 years with no such problem and that is not a side effect of drug.

I Too Have Been On Medication For My Triglycerides (sp), Since Then I Been Diagnosed With Colitis, Which Is First Noticed By The Person By Blood In The Stools. I Immediatetly Stopped Taking My Meds And The Blood Went Away, Aweek Later I Started Them Again And The Blood Came Right Back. I Called My Doctor She Told Me This Was Not A Side Affect Of Statins And She Me To A Specialist. I Was Scopped And Was Diagnosed With Ulcerative Colitis. I Have Been Doing Research On Cholesterol Meds (statins) And Have Found Colitis Is A Side Effect Of Them, So This Can Be A Side Effect, I Have It In Writing.
My Follow Up Is Tuesday With My Gastro. 2 Days Ago I Stopped These Meds And I Plan An Herbal Approach To Treat My High Triglyceridies. I Will Post When I Get Back From The Doctor And Let You Know What He Says.
By The Way Both The Specialist And Regular Doctor Told Me My Medicing Couldn't Cause This---lipitor, If You Seach Hard Enough, Says It Can.

pau,
I doubt that Lipitor has anything to do with bloody stools. But unless you are CERTAIN of hemorrhoids, a lower GI series of barium x-rays and/or a colonoscopy is called for .
Even WITH hemorrhoids, a colonoscopy every 5 years is wise.
