hello! i have noticed in the last half year or so that the nails on both my index fingers, but more so on the right hand than the left are yellower than the rest. i paint my nails occasionally, although not often and always use an undercoat, so i can't imagine this could be related to that (especially since this is not happening to all my nails!) could this be a sign of a more serious problem? please let me know. thanks!

It 'could' be a sign of "yellow nail syndrome". If the stain goes all the way through the nail, you might want to see your physician. To see if it is a surface sain or a deep stain, simply buff the surface of the nail with a 240 grit white block buffer just enough to remove the surface shine. If the nail underneath is not bright white and clear, see your doctor.

Marti, do you happen to know a good way to prevent surface nail stains? i get them on my big toes. the base is never yellow, just more of the middle and the ends get brittle. its not bad at all.. but i'd rather it just go away! this is not a fungus problem though. i usually always have my toenails painted but i have been sticking to clear polish with white tips or pale pinks.. and i do always use a protective base coat. to get rid of the yellow i have to file or scrub the top layer off... id rather not have to do this! i dont want to end up making my nails thinner! thanks.

Your toenails are thicker than your fingernails, so lightly buffing them on an occasional basis with a 240 grit white block buffer won't over thin them. Toenails stain very easy as they don't secrete as much natural oils and moisture as the fingernails.
