Hi,
I try to lead a healthy lifestyle but unfortunately there is sooo much confusing and contradictory info out there that it can be merely frustrating and quite difficult to come up with a final conclusion of an ultimatey healthy diet. For example, some people say that wheat is bad for you and since I have constipation, one website will say eat losts of whole grains like All bran cereals and whole grain breads, (okay, that's loaded with wheat). And then I find out about how many people are suffering from adverse conditions due to wheat like acid reflex, asthma, rashes, diahrea, etc. So it's like, okay, where do I draw the line!?! Then, the DASH recommends one eats 3 low fat dairy products a day, however, many websites totally bash cows milk, and many websites totally bash soy. Now, I don't HAVE to drink milk, but I like my cereal, ya know! :D I was quite suprised to come accross information about how wheat is bad for us. I though wheat was VERY healthy. And, it seems like a vegetarian lifestyle is a healthy approach, however, protein is essential and I don't feel like eating beans and rice for the rest of my life and I only like soy milk and no other soy products. Plus, I have a 2 year old. I do think that a little meat is okay as long as it's organic and lean. Well with all that in mind, I'd like to know what you guys think. If you can, give me a description on a healthy lifestyle, we all know that yoga/meditation, exercise, weights, spirituality and hobbies is the other part of the spectrum. So, what do you all think. I'm open ears. :) Or should I say EYES!!LOL :D

In my own humble opinion (something I'm good at giving on this board, ha!, but you asked) I think, everything in moderation. I mean, except illegal drugs and stuff that can screw up your brain. As far as foods go, I don't cut out anything completely. I try to eat a lot of what I know is good for me, like fruits, veggies and white meat, and drink water. But I don't think most 'diets' are practical or healthy. I'll eat things that make me feel healthy. I don't really like bacon or sausage or sugary stuff anymore, because they makes me feel fat and lousy...
I think it's less a matter of going by the book with diets than just controlling your portions and making good choices. You can't really go wrong with fresh fruits and veggies.
And of course, exercise. So that's my opinion... ;)

Well, I don't really eat any wheat except this cereal called Oranic Valley (like cheerios but organic). Do you think I should just give up wheat AND gluten all together, or just wheat? And, my bread is called Oarmeal bread by Nickel's and it has a picture of wheat on the front.

I DO, I do believe you but I dunno it's so hard, plus, I'm not a celiac so I know I could have it sometimes(wheat). It seems LIKE everything has wheat in it, like my favorite cereal :( I tried brown rice pasta and I didn't like it. Maybe the corn is better. I love wheat pasta, lol. Come to think of it, I haven't had it in like 2 weeks! Oh well, I'll keep trying my best. I like to do research and thought this would be a great thread to start considering it's labled "healthy lifestyle." ANd, it's still kinda in my head that whole grains (which has wheat) are good for us (people without celiac), OH forget it, it's confusing, LOL. I think it's time for me to go to sleep. I'm making a big deal out of this. PUt it this way, I've cut wheat out of my diet SIGNIFICANTLY except the oatmeal bread, but I think it has a lot less wheat in it than "wheat bread." Thanks again Losec! :)

I think that wheat in moderation is ok. The problem is that people digest to much of it these days because it is added to so many foods and products.

Like Blue102 said most things in moderation, it is something I've lived by most of my adult life. I try not to overdo any one food group, I do eat less wheat but I do eat other whole grains. I also use portion control, small amounts, never go back for seconds.(well, on a rare occasion I have) I think most foods are healthy but not healthy for some people, everyones system is different is what it can handle and so on. I find I can eat wheat, but if I eat it everyday it will bother me, same with dairy, I eat soy one day and milk the next and always fat free or close to it. I love fruits but they don't like me if I eat them 2 days in a row. You have to experiment with what makes you feel good and how your body utilizes what you put in it. I stay away from claims that all carbs are bad, all fat is bad, only this way is good so on and so forth as I feel they have an agenda and it isn't always the healthier way.

I feel there is nothing wrong with wheat unless you are allergic to or trying to loose weight. Some people are allergic to peanuts, but you don't see people saying peanuts are bad. I eat lots of bread and pasta, but very little meat. Mostly seafood, veggies, pasta, and bread. I feel good, have good blood tests, and have no weight problems. (I'm 115 lbs.) I did have high cholesterol at one time, but haven't had it since I lowered my total fat intake.

A lot of people won't eat bread, pasta, or starches when they are trying to loose weight r****ly. Starch turns into sugar in the body so if they don't exercise it off or use up the excess energy, they have trouble loosing weight. I really not not believe that this idea is the best way to loose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
I believe in finding the balance of a variety of food that is right for you. Some people's bodies have trouble handling different types of food and that is why there is no one diet that fits all. I also believe in exercise unless you absolutely can't do it. I also respect vegetarians and feel they are on the right track. (The ones that eat healthy and include whole grains in thier diet.)
I'm not a vegetarian; although, I do eat a lot of vegetarian meals. I prefer whole wheat bread, but I'm the only one who will eat it in my house and it is expensive so I eat the same white bread everyone else eats. I find whole wheat pasta to be really good, but it doesn't seem to fill me up like regular pasta. I eat pasta around 5 times per week and do not have a pasta gut. I walk during my breaks at work. I also exercise for 45-60 min. every night.
Here's what I ate yesterday........BKf-1 coffie, 1 orange juice, 1 toast with low-fat cream cheese and jelly, and cantalope....Morning Snack-rice cakes.......Lunch-1 diet soda, low-fat ham sandwich with lettuce and onion, blueberries with wheat germ, and fat-free chips......Super-Grape juice, pasta with low-fat spread and parmesan cheese, prawns, and snow peas......No night snack last night......If I do have a night snack, it's usually popcorn.
What do you eat?

Well, lately I've been on a wheat free/low gluten diet just to see if my constipation symptoms would go away. Oh, and I also switched to light soy milk from cows milk. Anyways, I'll tell you what I ate yesterday...2 Van's wheat free and gluten free waffles (made from brown rice flour), light syrup, Balance butter, and 2 cups of coffee. Snack, a large glass of very veggie juice, then some yogurt with 2 tbs of flaxseeds, lunch I had a protein plus bar cause I was on the run and had to go to school, due to going in the evening I packed a PBJ sandwich on rye with grapes. Than came home and had some cantelope. Today I had the same waffles, and I just bought some brown rice bread and had a chicken burger with some brocolli, and for dinner I'll probably have a dinner by Amy's organics which is the enchilata with beans and rice. I'll also probably have a salad with gr peppers and cucumbers, then some 2% organic cottage cheese or something. And probably some fruit tonight. So that's how I eat. Very little meat, some beans, yogurt, cottage cheese, fruits veggies and like I said, I'm trying to stay away from wheat. I actually felt great for the past 3 days except for today I feel constipated again. And I think it's because of the rye bread cause it has a little wheat in it. :( Not to be gross or anything but I was going fine and I couldn't beleive it cause I've been eating like this for like 5-7 days. Before I bought the rye bread, I bought spelt bread and I was feeling great until today. As I speak, I can feel that my stomach is bloated and it's like, I know I have to go but I can't. I've been suffering from this since I was a kid and from being on the Diet and Nutrition boards, I learned about how many people have adverse reactions to eating wheat. I'm going to give this a try for a little longer to see how I feel. Oh and Dr. Mercola also recommends people to obstain from wheat because many of his patients were relieved from the many sypmtoms related to wheat from just giving it up! Sorry this is so long, lol. :D

Jessica, You're eating very good! Great eating habits. Maybe if you try eating more fruit it will help with the constipation. Apples, apple cider, (not apple juice) watermellon, and romaine lettuce are good for releaving constipation.

I LOVE fruit, hehe. I eat a lot of fruit, actually like 3-4 servings a day lately. I hate veggies except brocolli and cheese and my very veggie juice. Thanks Mag!

Hello again, I forgot...What really works fast for me is this salad I make....It's a big bowl of Romaine lettuce, raisins, 1 apple, and a few nuts. The next day I have a nice big "blow out." (Loose bowels)
You eat really good. It's odd that you would have a problem. My sister was on a low-carb diet once and had that problem. (She used one of those weight loss centers.) They said too little fat and too little carbs will bind you up, so they had her eat a baked apple to get regular again. She claims it works. They said the apple had to be baked, because the baking processed turns the apple into a starch, which is what makes you go. I guess you could nuke the apple too if you want.
Another idea is to start eating some prunes or pistachios everyday. That's what works for my mother-in-law.
My hubby prefers eating tons of watermellon to get moving.

Yes, I'm here. I was just a little frustrated the other day when I posted everything that I ate for the day, and there was something wrong with the website!lol So, I guess nobody wants to post what they eat, huh?lol YOU haven't even posted what you ate at all in the past few days, what's up with that? :) Anyways, my weekend wasn't too good,(my diet) but I've been real good all week. :) Like Sunday, the day after the wedding shower, we ordered pizza, and I also had an organic egg burrito with turkey from whole foods hot breakfast, which isn't too bad, but I didn't eat much fruit or veggies that day. But I havn't posted the rest of the week cause no one else is, and my diet has been low of gluten and free of wheat. :)

Ok I'm in. This is my first post on this particular board. Currently I am trying to remedy a few issues in my life and hoping the diet and exercise will help.
1. Acid reflux. I have given up fried foods, spicy food, fatty foods and carbonated beverages (for the most part). I also limit chocolate, caffeine, sweets, etc. I have slipped up on accasion and I do pay for it dearly. I have almost constant chest pains and stomach discomfort. Prescriptions have not helped at all. The only thing that has helped some is Apple Cider Vinegar and good old fashioned Pepto-Bismal or Gaviscon.
2. I'm overweight. I'm hoping that by losing weight my reflux will go away.
3. In the past couple of years I have developed anxiety. It seems to coincide with the chest pains I get from the reflux. They scare me and then my mind go haywire and I start worrying about everything. Again, I tried prescription drugs and felt worse on them, so currently I am not taking any meds for anything.
Also, recently I quit smoking and have developed some insomnia. I'm trying to make sure I exercise enough to tire myself out for sleeping. If that doesn't work then a Tylenol PM will do the trick.
Today's diet
Breakfast - mug of hot tea w/ Tblsp of Sugar in the Raw and FF Half & Half, banana, 2 slices of turkey (weird eh? I heard you should eat protein for breakfast??)
Snack - Handful of mixed nuts w/ dried cranberries.
That's all I've had today so far. Here is the plan for the rest of the day:
Lunch - Apple, pretzels, & PB&J on Wheat (I've also always been under the assumption that wheat was good for you. By reading these boards I'm learning otherwise).
Snack - If I need a snack I have a yogurt or carrots.
Dinner - Traders Joes Crab Stuffed Flounder and some type of veggies,
Am I over eating? Undereating? Eating too much of something, not enough of something else? I'm 35 years old and honest to God I feel 50 some days. I would love to see a nutritionist but insurance won't cover it.
I'm interested in this Gluten Free diet. I'm going to look up some info on that.
If that doesn't work then a Tylenol PM will do the trick.

hi lannen..the only thing that will fix that reflux would be the gluten free diet..at first you might feel there is nothing else to eat, but believe me you will eat soooo good..that your digestive system will feel brand new ;).. my culprit to the acid reflux was wheat..im pretty sure that the majority living with acid refilx is thia nasty Gluten.. they put this stuff everywhere so the body gets real frustrated eating always wheat wheat wheat..everywhere..anyways there is a post in the diet and, nutrition about 'posting the foods that you eat' come and, join us :)

Well, I JUST posted what I ate 2 days ago, and if nobody else (including you Losec) is going to do it then forget it. :) ANyways, Lannin( I think), do you eat a high gluten filled diet. Like, the MAIN problem I think, is greasy foods, white refined carbs, sometimes wheat, etc. LIke gluten is in a few healthy things you may not want to give up like oatmeal, spelt, etc, but the "bad" gluten is in ALL junk food. From what I read, not ALL gluten is bad unless you have an allergy, but TOO much can cause problems cause it's in EVERY junkfood made to man! Plus, many people have bad reactions to wheat. Now, you MAY need to cut gluten out all together, but I would start off by eliminating wheat and junk FIRST because you may not have an allergy to gluten. If you don't do any better, then cut out gluten completely. At any rate, before you completely cut out all gluten, I would see a doc because you may end up having a reaction from cutting it out for so long(then eating it after a while), when you didn't have any problems with gluten in the first place :)

Jess.. you really said the word "JUNK"..LOL ;)..anyways aren't you enjoying the spelt bread..damn I wish I could eat that one :(.. anyways the reason why I don't agree with wheat is simple..bacuz it contains Gluten..there is also corn gluten or rice gluten but, these are not as sticky and, easier to digest.. I also notice this when i make rice/corn pasta.. when I wash my pot.. takes 2 seconds one whipe and, its done..Now with the wheat I would be scrubbing forever trying to scrub the pot with AJAX..LOL.. I think this sticky substance is whats harming lots of people.. also very toxic :).. im not scaring you..LOL I just want you to feel betta..LOL

ps: again some do good with wheat, most of us do not :( :)

Hello everyone. I just found this board. I usually hang out on the menopause and HBP boards. I'm 43, in perimenopause and have been striving to live a healthy lifestyle for the past 10 years. I'm not a nut about it, but really try hard to be good to my body especially since I am going through perimenopause.
I exercise for an hour every day, take a multi vitamin, 1000 mg calcium, flax seed oil and folic acid. I drink alcohol in moderation and don't do any drugs. I don't even like over the counter stuff.
I only eat red meat once a week, lots of fish, some chicken and tons of fresh fruits and vegetables. I start everyday with oatmeal. I heard it helps keep cholesteral down. When I grocery shop, I shop the perimeter of the store and try to stay out of the middle isles where all the processed stuff is. All the fresh and natural stuff is on the perimeter, produce, meats and dairy etc.
[ website not allowed - please carefully review the posting rules ]
This past year has been rough with my blood pressure being elevated and having anxiety due to peri. But eating right and exercising help both problems a lot. I guess there's always room for improvement, that's why I'm glad you started this board.
Have a great day!

Okay Losec, where the HECK did you hear that one, lol. Osteperosis is caused from lack of calcium and muscle, not from eating too much gluten, lol ;) Unless you did read this somewhere? Really? THAT one is quite shocking to me.
Anyways, the above poster was talking about how she took an online test from a man who wrote the book called "Real Age" and it indicated that she was 5 years younger and it was the same for me cause I took it(5 years younger). Did you ever hear of it.

nope Jess.. never heard of it..
to answer to your question..I have a little osteo.. in my lower back..i guess you know by now that gluten is found in all the junk and, inexpensive foods..these foods that are boxed or canned are fiiled with chemicals that the human body does not like..most of us are eating bad, leading to malnurished, this results in diseases and, some cancers..osteo.. occurs to people that have malubsorption.. entestines that are not properly absorbing nutrients,..like calcium.. most of the peolpe that have osteo.. are suffering with undiagnosed celiac.. I know that all this crap, which is gluten is responsable for osteo.. my osteo.. is alot betta since im not eating gluten. :)
I sound like a broken record, don't I.?? :)

Oh, that's interesting. I have a question, so the "bad gluten" is the stuff they put in the inexpensive stuff right? Well oats, barley, spelt and kamut have gluten in it, so it would be good for someone who doesn't have celiac right? I think you may have touched up on an answer similar to my question but I'm kinda confused, like, those kinds of gluten are good right? What's the difference between the "junk food" gluten and the "kamut" etc gluten? Thanks Losec, you really know your stuff! :D ;) Oh, and I think you did mention the fact that you had osteo before. I have my pop up blockers blocked right now and I can't make my sad face for ya. Btw, I bought some Spelt flakes today, Kashi oatmeal waffles and spelt bread. The oatmeal waffles say wheat flour on it thought but I don't think A LITTLE is going to hurt. I really don't like Vans all that much. Oh, and those Psyllium husks are working for my constipation, and I feel sooooo much better today. :) I read about how "whole grains" prevent cancer and help keep insulin levels down, hence, I've been buying spelt, kamut, oatmeal, and eating good meats, organci cottage cheese etc. Diabetes runs in my family big time so I have to watch. Plus, I like whole grains they keep me full, and they are so satisfying in a low fat healthy way, ya know! :)

I think the better breads like you mentioned will nurious the body much better then full gluten breads..full gluten breads leave you feeling full mostly bloated but, are not nuorishing you..its not normal to feel full for along time..like say if you have wheat pasta and, then go on for hours and, hours without eating cuz you got no appetite..thats not a normal feeling..the body needs food on a regular basis..5 or 6 times a day...hmm if diabetis runs in your family..ouch :(.. the better breads like kamut or spelt are not as packed with gluten..so if you don't feel good with wheat, then these breads might work for you. :)

I would say that my definition of a healthy lifestyle is to balance all five areas of life: physical, cerebral, spirtual, social and financial.
Physical: Getting lots of exercise and eating well enough to to be healthy but not so strict that we can't indulge and enjoy a glass of wine or some delcious cake now and then. Also, to make the most of what we have and dress up and feel sexy sometimes!!
Cerebral: Aiming for full mental agility through reading books, learning a foreign language, learning to play a musical instrument, ruminating over abstract concepts or world events
Spiritual: To feel human by doing stuff we love - playing ball, dancing to music we love, laughing, doing stuff that matters and which makes us feel enriched and like our inner fire is still burning away.
Social: To have wonderful conversations with friends and family, to laugh and have great experiences, to go places interact with different people, to feel engaged, to feel inspired, and to find people whose company we enjoy
Financial: To save as much as we can and be careful about debt so we can focus on the other 5 areas of life!
Thats MY definition of a healthy lifestyle.

for me it's what i can eat and what i cannot eat.
yes: all vegetables, fruits, organic yogurt, meat only if it's organic (so just about never), tea, fish (although i should really be more careful about this - because of biomagnified toxins in them and overfishing), pasta, grains, soups, rice, vermicelli. i've been eating salads just about every day.
no: meat, pastries, processed foods like snacks, coffee . . . i can't even remember because i simply zone out the things i can't eat.
it's hard, because i love meat, but it'll be worth it.

my definition of a healthy lifestyle - keep in mind i am very strict with myself, and i know this may only work for me:
-no junk food
-no soda (diet or regular)
-no processed foods
-most, if not all, organic
-no soy products
-no milk (raw cow's milk is fine however, i don't own a cow)
-vitamins (mornings, with meals, night-time)
-no 'light' versions of food, only full fat, full carb, etc.
-lots of proteins
-lots of fibre (25-35g/day)
-waiting at least half an hour pre-post meal to drink anything.
-limited cheese (thats just becasue i hate cheese though, nothing particularly wrong with it)
-daily exercise
-daily morning/night-time stretching
-journaling, having time to myself every day (for my mental health)
-limited alcoholol
maybe try a naturopathic dr if you are still having problems?

I loved your post. In other words, a healthy lifestyle would constitute one that would heavily suggest balance. Any extreme indulgence or deprivation puts one at risk for an imbalance. And imbalance results in things like disease, depression, high blood pressure, obesity, anorexia, etc.

Jessicca- I know a lot of people have been telling you to cut wheat out, but you've still had troubles with your bowels. Just a lil insight- I find that as a result of eating dairy, not even a TON, that sometimes I can get constipated. I'm regular when I don't have cottage cheese for a couple days in a row, and I don't drink milk...I may have a little cheese and a yougurt or ice cream, but thats about it. Coupled with that, I try to eat ww and whole grain when possible, and none of that spelt or rice stuff (no offense to anyone). Lots of water and fruits and veggies as well. I know you've got a 'thing' with wheat, but I just wanted to offer some different advice than others have mentioned...

Hi girly,
Yeah I know I'm still having troubles but it may be because I'm not TOTALLY omitting gluten from my diet, i'm not sure...i'm impatiently wating for my appt which is the 12th to see a GI specialist. Just to test myself, I had some ALL bran this morning(high in fiber) to see if I felt, you know, relief, and my tummy is kinda hurting me. I'm not sure if it's wheat or not, but it may be. SOmetimes I don't think it is...Yeah I know i'm real confusing, lol. Thank you so much for the advice and you may very well be right. :)
P.S. I'll let you know what it is after my appt, I may not find out everything though, this could be a long process.
