Since I can remember I have seen raised vertical lines on my nails. I recently heard something about nails and nutrition. I feel like I have a pretty good balanced diet with good amount of exercise. So I was wondering if this might not be nutrition related and maybe just genetic or something else more serious. I read online that it could have to do with heart disease or kidney problems. I am only 18 and pretty healthy so I don't think it is anything serious. Just wanted to hear from some people that might know about this.
Thanks

Vertical lines, or ridges, can also be genetic. These ridges are actually the rails and grooves upon which the nail plate rides forward, much like a train rides forward on its tracks. The rails are on the surface of the nail bed, and the grooces are on the underside of the nail plate. If the nail plate becomes severly dehydrated, these ridges can appear. They will also appear due to genetics or due to aging. Since you have had them since ever you can remember, check with your parents and grandparents to see if they have them as well. If not, you may want to ask your physician if they could be a health related symptom.

i have ridges on my nails.. and i dont think its any problem. i dont have any health problems, and i take a multivitamin every night, exercise, and eat healthy. i think my mom's grow that way, so im guessing its hereditary for me. to get rid of it.. i sometimes use a 4 way nail buffer with each side a different texture. they work great and make your nails super shiny! i usually get lazy and just forget about it though :p
