just wondering if you all had to get a letter of necessity from a doctor before a evaluation was done. If so how long did it take to get it? It seems like it's taking forever for me. I've called my dr's office to see if they have sent it. All I get is answering machines...gotta love those machines. :) I'm sure my dr receives lots of requests like mine. I think I"m just getting impatient.

I dont think you have to have a letter from the doctor..I sure didnt. If I had waited for my doctor, I probably wouldnt have ever gotten him therapy. You might have to take your child for the preschool screenings to get it free. The only reason I can see that you would need a letter, is if you were privately getting speech therapy for insurance purposes. It might be different in each state, I dont know for sure, but I didnt have a letter from my sons physician.take care

I think the letter is for insurance purposes because they can't schedule my appointment until they get that. It stinks big time!

You may want to see if the state has an evaluation center. My son was diagnosed by a Developmental Evaluation Center run by the state we lived in at the time. We didn't need a referal, but we did have to get on a waiting list.

Also if there's a TEEACH center in your area they will do an eval too. There may be others but I'm not familar with them.

Good luck.

We had to get a referral to have testing done at the university. I was having issues with our Dr office, but was able to get a refferal from the regional center for people with disabilities. I called a family resources center in our town and they gave us the # for the regional center. I am not sure about your state, but in CA the school dist tells us they cannot diagnose anything. A DR. has to do that. We are lucky, in CA we didn't have to pay for the testing and won't have to pay for the in home therapy, the regional center is paying for it.

That's awesome you don't have to pay for the evaluation in CA. I spoke with my dr's (unpleasant) nurse last week. She said it was in the works but wouldn't be completed until the end of the week. I just hope she was right and they get it in the mail or fax it soon.
Since there have been some obstacles in this process I keep wondering if I'm doing the right thing trying to get a diagnosis.

ok it has been three weeks since my dr's office said that the letter of necessity was completed, but I still haven't heard anything from the developmental disabilities center that's going to do my evaluation. I'm hoping my dr's office sent it to them. It wouldn't surprise me if it's in a pile waiting to be mailed. I hate to bug people. Should I call to make sure they got it?
