View Full Version : Breast Lump--Very Scared

I was scheduled for an appointment with my MD yesterday, and yesterday morning I kept having breast pain. As I felt around I found a small lump--not uncommon for my breasts (which are fibrocystic). I kept feeling it all day, and now the area is very painful to touch.

My doctor recommended a mammogram & ultrasound to diagnose what it is. I am so scared! She told me that continuous touching of it could make it swollen and enflamed and not to touch it. Is this true? I keep feeling it...

Any advise from anyone who's been in this situation would be appreciated. My mother has breast cancer (first diagnosed at age 56), and I am 31 with no kids (yet, hopefully).

Thanks,
Karie

Hi there,

Yes, it's true that if you keep touching the area you may cause it to hurt and swell. I know that it's absolutely useless to tell you "don't worry", or "don't be scared". (I was diagnosed with breast cancer at 25. I'm 26 now and in remission.) You have reason to be concerned, but try not to freak out b/c it doesn't do any good. You are doing everything you should -- getting that lump checked.

Have you talked to your mother about this? She might be a good person to talk to since she's going through it. I hope everything turns out ok for both you and your mom.
