I have a horrible fear of getting breast cancer. I've tried mental health "professionals" and they just say don't worry. Breast cancer support groups say they don't provide support to the uninflicted. My doctors say don't worry. Am I the only one with this fear?

You are not the only one with fears of cancer, i too always feared uterine cancer because i had to great grandmoms that died of it at a very young age and i heard horror stories about it, but you have to realize with breat cancer you can do your own exams once a month and also we have so many early detection screenings now that if someone gets it, it really can be treated in most cases. I would just suggest for you to do your exams and try to relax alittle.

Thank you for replying Shelby. I'm not certain where to get the strength to deal with this breast cancer fear. Everyone says it comes from within. What a lonely road. Anyway, thanks again for your attention.

I also have this fear of breast cancer. I've felt this way since I was about 12, I just can't get the thought out of my head.

I, too, have a terrible fear of breast cancer, especially since an in-law of mine only has one year to live because of it. 18 years of mammograms didn't see it. She found a lump 3 months after her last mammogram, and now she's dying. I don't see what is wrong with having your breasts removed after the age of 55. They are only milk glands. It's not like they are needed. Just the opposite: no more mammograms, biopsies, panic attacks about lumps, and ESPECIALLY, NO MORE F E A R !!! I'm not too worried about uterine or ovary cancer, because it is much more rare, and the tests of finding uterine cancer early are excellent. What do you think about what I just said??? Am I wrong to want to live flat-chested but with no fear??

Reply to Sister:
I totally agree with what you say. I have asked many surgeons about breast removal and they all say No.
Also, note that in my experience, no body cares if we are scared. Not doctors (physical or mental) not breast cancer support groups and just forget about the staff at breast health centers. Every body just says don't worry. My fear is so great, I can't get myself to my next mammogram. How do you deal with your fear?

Wow- I don't know where you live but I don't think I want to live in a city, state or whatever where no-one seems to care. That pretty much sucks. ( Hope it's OK to say that word.)
I can't say for sure whether or not I had a fear of getting breast cancer but I did get it 8 years ago and went through all of the tests, surgery, chemo, and then a year later a stem cell transplant as a precaution of it's return. I did have a lot of support from friends and family. Sad to say- I have since lost my husband to congestive heart failure. And there is now a chance that I may have uterine cancer. I go tomorrow for a biopsy.
I don't really know what to tell you to help you get over your fear but some things you might do is read up on it but make sure whatever you read is very up to date not more than 1 year old or even more recent.
Have regular check ups. Do your breast self exams. Don't smoke. Eat healthy. Stay in shape.
I blame myself if I do now have uterine cancer because I read that being obese is a factor. And unfortunately I am overweight. Somehow the cells in your body can change or something - I don't even know how to explain what I read. I hope to God I am not scaring you worse. I don't mean to.
I also hope you can find someone who is more understanding than the people you have been in contact with who tell you that you have nothing to worry about. Even if you don't- right now you ARE worried and scared and need someone to help you find a way not to worry.
I hope you find help.
Best Wishes- Bertha
